To think husband is awfully petty

teomama · 22/02/2023 18:17

Can’t believe I’m actually writing this, but my husband got upset because I opened a box of chocolates that his sister gave him for his birthday and ate a few of them. I laughed it out at first, but he insisted it was rude to open his present. I think that’s incredibly petty and actually feel offended to be told off like a child. AIBU?

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 22/02/2023 19:34

Yeah I wouldn't eat a present OP. Not cool

cassiatwenty · 22/02/2023 19:34

I clicked on this because I read that "think that husband is awfully pretty" so I clicked 😅

CrappyJob · 22/02/2023 19:36

First you say you ate a few. Now it's only two?

iam45 · 22/02/2023 19:37

teomama · 22/02/2023 19:21

I’ve been called a dick, twat, very disrespectful, mannerless, greedy for eating two chocolates and apologising for it.
Surely not the best thing to do, but using this language is not really great either. I regret posting it - you really made me feel like shit. Thanks to everyone who conveyed their thoughts politely.

if you can’t cope with being called a dick when you’re being a dick, why post on AIBU?

jays · 22/02/2023 19:37

Oh fuck sake, she shouldn’t have eaten the chocolates. I think she gets the message! Do we really need 500 posts saying the same thing! Ffs! The outage! What do you want her to do? Move out? It’s chocolates, she didn’t sleep with the guy’s brother, calm down!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 22/02/2023 19:37

OP: AIBU

Majority of posters. YABU

OP. I'm not, I'm not!

Wonder why some people ask, and then get offended when we don't agree with what they've done?!

OP, YABU. If it were my chocs, you wouldn't have lived to tell the tale! Grin

15feb · 22/02/2023 19:38

I might ask sometimes and other times might not, but the really unreasonable part is not acknowledging it after he said he was upset.

Probably the chocs in this case meant more to him than you know. To you it was a generic freebie from a random person fair game to open, maybe to him it was a sentimental or treasured gift from his sister.

FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks · 22/02/2023 19:39

YABVU. You don’t open other peoples gifts. Didn’t your parents teach you any manners?

BasiliskStare · 22/02/2023 19:39

It's not being a terrible human being but politeness would say if it was some one else's present then you ask before opening it. Dh was given a bottle of champagne recently - wouldn't dream of opening it without asking. It isn't the money or the amount but if it was specifically given to someone for themselves then surely common sense says you ask.

gemeouttahere · 22/02/2023 19:39

If he's that pissed off then I put it to you, OP, that it's not just about the chocs!

Sassysia · 22/02/2023 19:40

Not read all the replies but me and my husband would always open chocolates in the house 😂whichever one of us were given them it just would never be an issue!! As long as one of us hadn’t scoffed the whole box obviously. I can’t believe people would even give this a second thought!!

QuackMooBaaOink · 22/02/2023 19:41

Yup, agree with the majority here.
YABVU.
They were a gift, not just general food cupboard stuff. They weren't yours to open, I'd be really pissed off too.

Don't behave like a child and open and eat someone else's choccies without asking then!

silverbubbles · 22/02/2023 19:41

I think it depends what usually goes on in your household. if he regularly eats your chocs then fair enough!!

Twilight7777 · 22/02/2023 19:42

Someone else’s gift is not for you to open, YABVVU!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 22/02/2023 19:42

If someone started on my chocs I'd demand they buy me a new box! You spoilt his pleasure of his present.

Whilst I did vote YABU, I do agree with this.

PrincessPeach92 · 22/02/2023 19:45

I'd probs be annoyed in his shoes but would accept an apology.

Mainlinethehappy · 22/02/2023 19:46

@teomama
”Surely not the best thing to do, but using this language is not really great either.”
You want to focus on the language of posters now? Full marks for deflection. Just focus on how you opened and ate his chocolates, maybe, and how the general consensus is that this is appalling, disrespectful, greedy behaviour. Greedy in the wider sense, before you point out again that you only ate two.

GiveMeStrengthNow · 22/02/2023 19:46

@jays how do you know she didn't sleep with the guys brother before she ate the chocolates?

Someone eats my chocs they're a dead person walking

Mainlinethehappy · 22/02/2023 19:48

tillyoumakeit · 22/02/2023 19:44

Whilst I did vote YABU, I do agree with this.

But it’s so much fun toying with a poster’s inability to metabolise the general consensus.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 22/02/2023 19:49

I just want to know what the chocolates they were.

If it was a tub of Celebrations etc I wouldn't expect people to ask to open them, but something like Prestat...YABVVVVU.

You've had a kicking @teomama so I actually hope they were something like Prestat so it was worth it Smile

😂😂 that made me laugh out loud!

Incaspider · 22/02/2023 19:49

I think he's being petty and stingy! I would have also opened them and helped myself and thought nothing of it! It's just chocolates!
