To think that Stacey Dooley isn't a realistic new mum role model for women

NeverendingStory32 · 22/02/2023 14:33

I picked out Stacey Dooley because I've just been reading about her but I know this applies to many other celebrities. She gave birth to her daughter in January and she's already back to work and attending events. She's also posted photos of her slim post baby body and trendy, flattering outfits on social media. Obviously it depends on your experience of pregnancy and giving birth but does this image of post natal motherhood put pressure on women? To me, I see it as unrealistic for the majority of women, including myself and my own experiences. Why can't celebrities share more honest, typical reflections of early motherhood that the majority can relate to.

What do people think?

Read the thread. Plenty of posts are also about Stacey Solomon.

Don't tell me to read the thread. Read it. Some woman don't realise that life is so different for us all.

I've seen woman accused of gloating because they remained slim after having a baby then woman who say they have a good relationship with a man as being deluded.

What are you talking about, that is totally irrelevant to my post.

You incorrectly told a poster she was discussing the wrong person when she wasn’t because you hadn’t read the thread.

We are talking about Stacey Dooley.

Actually the thread has been about both Stacey's

Not from the beginning.

I really like Stacey Dooley.

I don't follow the other Stacey.

They are really not the same.

Er, did you think the thread was for you personally? Wine

Why is Stacey Solomon using pegs to hang her crisps up?! Who hangs their crisps up?

This. Does it not take up a lot of space?

Novatherova · 22/02/2023 21:46

Derbee · 22/02/2023 14:47

And a house full of absolute tat that’s she’s made with a glue gun and some pipe cleaners 😂

Why can’t I stop following her Instagram though?

Oh I don't bother now. Fed up with all the celebs.

She puts a tension rod at the top of the cupboard and pegs the crisps up so she can use the shelves for other things. In my mind it does make sense but in my heart I couldn’t be arsed 😂

Yeah, I put all the crisps in a plastic bag and shove it in.

This. I have a friend who was back in her pre pregnancy jeans within a couple of days. I was always showered, dressed and made up too. I don’t recognise the postnatal shitshow I read about here at all.

Postnatal shit show

What did you mean?

I snapped back after each of my 3 pregnancies, you'd never tell I'd been pregnant after about a week or so. Not everyone gains 4 stone and looks like a whale, in fact the whole post baby body worry actually caused me a lot of stress in my first pregnancy as I thought I'd be left with huge stretch marks and weight I'd never shift. That wasn't my reality thankfully, so I welcome seeing mum's snap back. As for going out, it's personal choice isn't it, I breastfed so didn't pack them off early on but if a mother wants to and has support at home to do that why on earth not? You don't turn into a overweight hermit just because you have a baby, life goes on. Why should she sit at home wearing big knickers eating ice cream just because you did?

Looks like whale?

It's not ok to judge women who sail through pregnacirs but it is OK to insult those who gain weight? Double standards about women shaming 👏

Whichwhatnow · 22/02/2023 22:22

Two of my friends who each had two babies in quick succession recently were back in size 6/8 within a couple of weeks after each birth with completely flat stomachs. Admittedly they were slim to start with and only mid 20s but it's not unheard of. Unfair to say Stacey shouldn't just carry on living her life in case she makes other mums feel bad.

Lavender14 · 22/02/2023 22:33

NeverendingStory32 · 22/02/2023 18:43

In all honesty, I can be envious of those who bounce back quickly. With my first, it took months to recover from birth trauma and a 3L blood loss. I couldn't walk properly for ages either. I had pnd after both my children. My post natal experiences were horrible.

However, I do understand that not everyone is like that. Yes, some women are just luckier than others. That's just life.

I do think it would be helpful if things were more balanced on social media though by higher profile mums. I suppose Stacey Dooley just caught my attention but it could be any celebrity.

Why should they though? Surely women in the public eye are just as entitled to work through the difficult parts of post partum as any other woman? Especially if they aren't setting themselves up specifically as a birth/pregnancy/ parenting blogger or influencer? Just because they are in the public eye and happen to become a mother doesn't mean they owe their struggles to the general public. Never mind considering how in doing so they'd also be exposing themselves to negative feedback which is the last thing you'd need when you're struggling. I'd always thought I'd be very open about everything and then when I fell pregnant I told a few people early and then we had some big scares and I wished I'd kept it secret , not because I'd never have told my friends if something went wrong but I'd have shared it in my own time on my own terms. Surely every woman is entitled to that regardless of who they are or what job they do?

No one said they were the same.

A thread is allowed to diverge from its original topic.

SS is relevant to the discussion as she too has recently had her baby too and is posting on SM about her.

You aren't the thread police.

Chill.

Feefee00 · 22/02/2023 23:32

Stacey is naturally slim anyway I've never seen her looking heavier. Also when you are wealthy you can afford nannies and cleaners which make life so much better.

WatchingGreysAgain · 23/02/2023 07:07

But that is her reality? Just there is no normal after having a baby.
I had very easy births, PP recovery and easy newborns, I wasn’t living in pjs, I did my make up everyday from the day after they were born, I was driving/cooking/doing housework within a week. But should I keep that to myself because it isn’t the “normal” postpartum image we are led to believe IS normal?

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 23/02/2023 07:26

Woohoo! It's almost like the middle ages..let's tear chunks of each other for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Jesus H Christ 🤦‍♀️

Astrabees · 23/02/2023 12:50

It is probably hard enough just being a celebrity without people expecting you to be a role model too.

Astrabees · 23/02/2023 12:50

And not just any role model. You e got to struggle enough for people to think you're finding it hard, but you mustn't complain too much because you need to acknowledge your rich privilege that anyone famous apparently just dumps their kid on a Nanny without shoving your wealth in people faces.

Wait2see2 · 23/02/2023 18:58

I think Kate Lawler and Gemma Atkinson give realistic accounts of motherhood on instagram.

Wait2see2 · 23/02/2023 18:58

I think Kate Lawler and Gemma Atkinson give realistic accounts of motherhood on instagram.

What does ‘realistic’ mean here though? It’s real for them. Stacey Dooley’s experience isn’t any less real just because you don’t identify with it. I found Kate Lawler to be massively negative about it for the first year, and that’s fine as that was her experience, but it wasn’t ‘realistic’ for me, as I didn’t identify with her experience.

AutumnScream · 23/02/2023 20:36

I think some posters here should ask their gps about counselling because you clearly are suffering some sort of post natal depression if you believe every woman should be over weight and depressed and struggling badly with their babies else they be lying or trying to put other women down. Stop taking other womens normal and other womens happiness as a personal dig against you.

I love Gemma Atkinson but sometimes she does tip over in to “professional northerner” territory with her “I’m just so normal” shtick

Mrsjayy · 23/02/2023 21:22

Aww yeah. Gemma I'm dead normal Atkinson she does have a gorgeous daughter and a Gorka I like them but they are sponsored up like most instagram celebs
