To think that Stacey Dooley isn't a realistic new mum role model for women

NeverendingStory32 · 22/02/2023 14:33

I picked out Stacey Dooley because I've just been reading about her but I know this applies to many other celebrities. She gave birth to her daughter in January and she's already back to work and attending events. She's also posted photos of her slim post baby body and trendy, flattering outfits on social media. Obviously it depends on your experience of pregnancy and giving birth but does this image of post natal motherhood put pressure on women? To me, I see it as unrealistic for the majority of women, including myself and my own experiences. Why can't celebrities share more honest, typical reflections of early motherhood that the majority can relate to.

What do people think?

Absolutely this!!

So it’s not realistic unless you’re 8 stone heavier than you we’re pre-baby and can’t shower for 47 weeks after giving birth. Righto. 🙄

So fun that this thread turned from IG unrealistic portrayal of life (an undenial phenomenon) to an opportunity for people to let everyone know how skinny they were post-birth. Mumsnet gonna Mumsnet.

Is that how the thread started, or was it a chance for OP to berate a woman who happened to be slim in pregnancy and slim after?
She's also posted photos of her slim post baby body and trendy, flattering outfits on social media.
I quite like Stacey Dooley but it's just annoying to see that.

I can’t see one thing about the particular Instagram OP is referring to that portrays a particularly curated and unrealistic life.

Jizzle · 22/02/2023 16:18

I find your opinion on this pretty laughable OP.

Just because you had a certain experience with having children, it doesn't mean people with a different experience are some how wrong.

These people are (generally) not lauding it over us saying how much better they are than you, so why take it so personally?

Your seem to think the only 'honest' accounts are those that agree with your perspective. After giving birth I felt great and wanted to get back to work within weeks, but I appreciate this isn't everyone's experience. That doesn't mean I think your opinion is false, or not honest.

BeeDavis · 22/02/2023 16:19

I was back in my pre-pregnancy jeans 6 days after giving birth. I actually weighed less after being pregnant than I did before I fell pregnant. It’s not unrealistic when it actually is some women’s reality.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 22/02/2023 16:20

Absolutely this!!

But just because it's not your normal and you struggled with baby weight, not going back to work, doesn't mean it's the same for everyone. People are saying their experiences are different, eg by loosing the baby weight and you clearly don't want to hear that as it doesn't fit your narrative.

letthemalldoone · 22/02/2023 16:21

I couldn't have worked up the energy to even consider caring.

I don't see celebrities as 'role models'. A lot of them are anything but!!

29052022J · 22/02/2023 16:21

But some women are like this post-birth, I know a handful of women who were super into exercise, maintaining their image and back to work within 6 months. It’s not for me, had a traumatic birth with medical complications, still in pain after 8 months and not in a rush to lose weight. Happy at home with my baby wearing a dressing gown 50% of the time. Do these women make me feel bad, no. We are not all the same and if you are comparing yourself to these women and need them to be relatable/your role model then you need to stop reading the papers and get off social media.

mynamesnotMa · 22/02/2023 16:22

Good for her. Is she wants to continue with her life after pregnancy good for her. Think it gives a good message. It's her choice.
I was totally flat and you'd never know I'd just given birth after my first. Not so after twins means nothing.
Her choice what she does.

This. I have a friend who was back in her pre pregnancy jeans within a couple of days. I was always showered, dressed and made up too. I don’t recognise the postnatal shitshow I read about here at all.

Some of us don’t bounce back and may have had complications from birth. I’m still having blood transfusions 8 months later. But I am friends with ‘got it together’ women, we don’t all have to be the same. I don’t judge my friends and they don’t judge me (maybe they do but at least they haven’t said anything)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/02/2023 16:25

Why does a celebrity owe any of us anything more when they become a parent?

She was a tv presented/ did ads pre kids. She is doing the same post kids.

Why can't celebrities share more honest, typical reflections of early motherhood that the majority can relate to.

What do you want her to do? Eat more so she's not as slim?
Why does she need to be a role model? Why must she be relatable? She's slim after having a baby - should she not show photos of herself in case someone thinks she's a bad role model?

Exactly. I don't know who this person is, but it is clearly her reality that she's already back to work and she is back to her pre-baby body. Why should she change that because it's not relatable to the majority of women? Is the rest of her life (or that of any other celebrity/influencer) relatable to most of us?

ImSorryThatWasJustANoise · 22/02/2023 16:32

I really like her and I don't care about her partners past or how slim she was straight after the birth.

I enjoy watching her on TV.

I really don’t understand posts like this. They have one baby who’s a few months old. A lot of parents manage absolutely fine with a baby at that stage, especially when there are two of you and the baby sleeps so much!

why would they need a nanny?!

GodSaveTheClean · 22/02/2023 16:41

Some mums don’t want to be squishy and milky and dishevelled after having a baby. The majority are, but don’t judge those that opt for something else, either intentionally or naturally.

Would you turn down a free stay at a corniche retreat in return for a few insta snaps?

Yes, she is and I agree and it is part of her work.

Oopsadaisysgranny · 22/02/2023 16:42

My mum came out of hospital with my new born brother in a white trouser suit from before she was pregnant !! That was in the 70s she sailed through the pregnancy and looked stunning . Mr on the other hand not so much !!!!

Chippychipschips · 22/02/2023 16:43

It’s not the norm but if you are a slim , sporty woman who didn’t put on additives weight during pregnancy you do tend to snap back. I was lucky that I am an athletic person and my body went back to my pre baby shape pretty quickly.

Chippychipschips · 22/02/2023 16:43

Sorry that should be additional weight!!

Bluebirdiee · 22/02/2023 16:46

I follow Stacey Dooley on Instagram. Where has she shown her super thin and back at work? All I've seen her post about recent pics of her in baggy clothes and clips from her new USA series where she is slim but I assume was filmed ages ago (probably before she was even pregnant)? She can't have filmed and released that in the past month.

I agree. A new Mum I know if the most chilled out person I know after having her first baby. Has been away with the three of them visiting us.
