Offered one off lift to colleague, turned into daily thing without pay!!

I’ve started a new job in November and one of my colleagues asked to be dropped off as a favour one day. Little did I know she would be waiting for me by the only exit on a daily basis. I’ve on numerous occasions made excuses and said I’m rushing to an appointment or my neighbour is locked out and I’ve got her spare indoors but to no avail. I’m what MN calls a pushover/ doormat. Im really upset as she doesn’t offer anything financially or even thank you. The worst thing is, I’ve given her the first lift home because she suffered a miscarriage and was taken ill at work. But because of that first kind act, she expected it everyday. I’m writing her a text message now as it’s getting too much now and I need to put my foot down. I don’t want to pussyfoot around her anymore.
AIBU?

She got into your TAXI???? As in you weren't actually driving yourself home in your own vehicle and you were using a taxi for private use and were paying for the taxi too???

That takes the biscuit!!!!

What I would do is send her an email (backed up by a text message) saying something like this:
Hi CF'er, I wanted to let you know that from tomorrow Thurs 23rd Feb, I am no longer available to give you a lift home, at any point of the day. You will have to find and use an alternative method of transport after that date. Do not make things difficult by repeatedly asking for a lift or by standing by my car as that just will be putting you in a bad light. If you hadn't jumped in my taxi when I was leaving to attend a personal appointment I may have been kind enough to extend the lifts until the end of the month but your presumptious behaviour will not permit this. Regards, TwinMama6

Sending it by email from your work account to hers will be the first thing. Then you can, if things escalate, contact your manager and say that you had fallen into this situation not of your own making and you're trying to put an end to it but CFer is being difficult. I know it's not a work related issue, but she could make the atmosphere very tense in the workplace. So my advice is also to cover your ass!

Goodread1 · 22/02/2023 13:59

Hi Op
Mention to taxi driver too, about what she's like co worker,

You Need to grow a back bone ultimately, and just tell her,
I am struggling money wise like a hell of a lot of people,
There is no way this can carry on with piss taking kind of stuff anymore

I was happy to do it first time cause of miscarriage/health issues then,
But that just it,
A one off
No more

BurtonsRevenge · 22/02/2023 13:59

I'll go ahead and file this under "this didn't happen" then.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 22/02/2023 14:00

If OP genuinely doesn't know if it is unreasonable to be upset at paying for someone else's taxi, then she deserves what she gets.

More power to the CF I say. If someone is so much of a doormat that they pay for your taxi ride home from work, milk it for all it is worth.

Killingmytime · 22/02/2023 14:00

Lol I send the taxi in really far direction and leave her to pay!

EmpressOfTheSofa · 22/02/2023 14:00

No one is this much of a wet lettuce.

OriginalUsername2 · 22/02/2023 14:03

Why is everyone suggesting polite ways of getting out of this?! Why does such a cheeky fucker not get told off in some way?!

After the second lift, I can’t believe nothing was said, even in a polite, apologetic way. OP you need to toughen up. Cheeky fuckers prey on people who are too nice! You’ll get it your whole life unless you show people you won’t be messed about.

Oncetheystartschool · 22/02/2023 14:04

Can't you get any other type of public transport home? Or work from home? I can't believe this is a real situation that has been going on daily since November! You must be spending thousands on taxi fares.

pattihews · 22/02/2023 14:04

So you're not going to tell us whether you pay for the taxi yourself or whether the employer pays?

Redebs · 22/02/2023 14:06

This is a wind-up folks

WineCap · 22/02/2023 14:07

No way this is genuine.

TwinMama6 · 22/02/2023 14:07

Irritatedmum · 22/02/2023 13:43

We need to know more- why do you get a taxi every day? How much does it cost, and how far out of the way do you go to drop her off? And why, why, why haven’t you said anything to her, especially the day you’d specifically told her you weren’t taking her?

When speaking to her or anyone about this, don’t call it a lift. You aren’t giving her a lift. She’s hijacking your taxi. Stop it with immediate effect.

Sorry I couldn’t answer every question. I’m not in the uk anymore I’m in East Africa for the last 1.5 years.
So you either jump on a
1:public bus, theft, people coughing, sick 🤒 and my immune system is not very good
2:public taxi which only goes on public roads and will not pull up in winding streets and you can end up walking for ages
3: private taxi 🚕 that goes to your front door. They charge per mile for the last one.

My journey for the morning and afternoon is around $5 when I go straight home but an extra dollar 💵 if she comes with me.

OP hand on your heart this is true? 😂😂

TwinMama6 · 22/02/2023 14:12

pattihews · 22/02/2023 13:54

And again, OP, do you pay for the taxi yourself or does your employer pay for it?

I’ve asked my employer for this as some of my colleagues have this paid but I’m not far enough, mileage wise.

Moveoverdarlin · 22/02/2023 14:12

It’s not a lift is it? You pay for her taxi home everyday? This is bizarre. I would say to the cabbie when you are both in the taxi, ‘excuse me, what is the fare from our work to CF house please? He’ll say £7 or something similar. You get your phone calculator out and say ‘right since November I’ve paid for you to get home everyday, according to my calculations that’s £560 you owe me based on five days a week for the last 4 months.’ And as of today, never let her do it again. I felt sorry for you initially, but now it’s just weird. Fair enough to not make her pay the first time because of the miscarriage thing, but now she is beyond taking the piss.

NamelessTemptress01 · 22/02/2023 14:12

Why haven’t you asked her for anything towards the fare?

Zooeyzo · 22/02/2023 14:13

Ask for a dollar. She might think you don't pay

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 22/02/2023 14:14

So she's costing you, if 5 days a week, an extra $20 a month on taxi fares. From Dec to half of Feb that's $70 of your wages after tax you've had to pay for her transport.
Tell her that.
How did she travel before you came along? How do the rest of your company get home?
Cheaper to buy a moped.

PillBoxes · 22/02/2023 14:14

Is it Half Term this week?

quietnightmare · 22/02/2023 14:14

Surely no one can be that much of a mug? Grow a spine OP.

Believe it or not, but I’m amazing at giving people advice for these type of things but when it comes down to me, I need to grow a pair!

OP posts:
LookItsMeAgain · 22/02/2023 14:16

So, now you have a concrete answer, you work out how many lifts she has availed herself of and 50/50 the costs. You then contact her and say "You owe me X amount for the lifts since Y date. Can you please transfer the money to my account. The company doesn't contribute towards the costs of my lifts in case you thought they did so I've been paying for your lifts home out of my money. I'm not doing that again"

First Post? Then you need to get in touch with mumsnet to see why someone else has been using your account Hmm
