For anyone who fancies growing their own (or already does and would like to try something new) We have been growing our own tomatoes for 40 years. Tried and tested loads over the years. We settled a few years ago on a good range of heritage varieties.
Top left is Mortgage Lifter - great story behind it. It's a large beef style tomato. Fabulous flavour and great for Greek salads. When we get a glut we make pasta sauce and freeze in zip lock bags.
Green zebra looks like an unripe tomato, but actually has a beautiful, sweet and zingy flavour.
The orange Valencia ones are amazing. They are probably my best find. Not as prolific as some, but just a fantastic taste and texture. I love them in sandwiches (on their own, with just a smidge of marmite)
Lastly the yellow cherry tomatoes grown in abundance. My Dad eats dozens of them every day in the summer. Straight from the plant as he's tending the plot.
I know it's too late for right now, however we still have pasta sauce in the freezer, jars of chilli jam, chutneys and bread and butter pickles (made from cucumbers) all made from last years fruits. It really does see you through the winter. If you start growing now, you will have a great variety for the summer months and some tasty treats for next winter.
