Meh. I've been called skinny loads of times. At school some kids even set up a 'feed leithreas fund'. Genuinely doesn't bother me. I have a mirror, I know I have a good figure.

But what if you didn't have a good figure, what if you were underweight and knew you looked awful?

Okunevo · 20/02/2023 19:50

leithreas · 20/02/2023 19:19

The OP didn't use 'skinny' as an insult though. People chose to take it that way. She was just complaining about clothes sizes and got called all manner of nasty things by 'skinny' people in return.

I hope you can help your teenager work on help esteem.

The OP keeps using the term when people have pointed out it is hurtful and derogatory. She could use the term 'slim' if that's what she actually means.

TheOrigRights · 20/02/2023 19:51

The thing you’re missing is that this isn’t privilege: it’s usually down to hard work and discipline

Define slim? Do you mean healthy weight or at the low end?
I don't think it unusual to maintain a healthy/slim body just by living a normal life, not hard work and discipline.

Skinny people don’t have a good figure, though -that’s the whole point. They don’t have a figure at all. If you have a good figure, you’re not skinny.

Define “good figure” though. I’d rather see a flat stomach and abs than anything else. Your comment is pretty rude, I’m not going to stoop to your level but just bear in mind that having a plus size figure has its downsides that many find undesirable too. Fit and toned is pretty much the Hollywood standard for a reason.

SalviaOfficinalis · 20/02/2023 20:01

M&S is great! I’m 32. It’s really improved in the last few years I think.

KirstenBlest · 20/02/2023 20:02

I'd say a good figure is someone who looks healthy and toned.
Skinny isn't a good look, and neither is flabby.

Okunevo · 20/02/2023 20:12

I'd say a good figure is fit with good muscle tone, a healthy weight and healthy waist to hip ratio. Not underweight.

I would say a good figure for a woman is slim, active but not muscular, lightly toned and with a defined waist.

How the fuck do you think this is ok to say? Just imagine if someone spoke this way about an overweight body. They would be lynched.

It has always been like this. I used to work with someone who constantly said...you need a sausage roll, you need a doughnut..the one time I responded in kind she ran off crying to HR.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 20/02/2023 20:27

@Comedycook i take being called skinny as an insult, it’s not a compliment! Skinny = you look Ill! I hate when family members, usually the older generation call me this, I am not skinny! I train for marathons and strength train, I don’t have bones poking out my skin, my face isn’t drawn in, I look good, I don’t look skinny!

The OP is very clearly using it as an insult.

For me personally I don't look good with a sub 20.5 BMI my tits start shrinking and my face looks gaunt even with fillers . Some people look good I don't I've just had a burger as I want to gain 4lbs.

It is very personal, isn't it? I look much better when I weigh less. If I'm over 21 BMI, my face looks flabby. I look loads older if i am overweight. Some people look much better when they're heavier but some don't. I look older and I look more tired. It's entirely the opposite for others.

Yep it's entirely personal decision we all have different figures and shapes . I tend to lose weight off my face , neck and upper chest area so it becomes bony and my legs and hips look proportionally too big. My beloved boobs also start shrinking. So I think I look better a bit bigger than BMI 20.5

LolaSmiles · 20/02/2023 21:13

You can’t just go shopping and take the huff because a few items weren’t on the rail in your size.
100% agree with you and it must be exhausting for people like the OP who would rather kid themselves there's a conspiracy against them than accept the more obvious fact that stock varies and lines vary, and most people have to shop around to find what fits and suits them.

I find it hard to find a leg length that's right for me on some cuts. Maybe that's leg-ist and there's average-leg-privilege, and everyone with average length legs must have such an easy ride of finding trousers because everyone knows women of average leg length don't come in a range of shapes and sizes, what matters is that when I can't get the right length for me is moaning that other women have privilege. 🤣

lljkk · 20/02/2023 21:17

Separates can be worn by any shape, including hourglass shape surely?

Not if they can't fit nicely on 38" hips & 28" waist they can't.

Or not without a belt, anyway.
Teenager trousers can be great, though. Adjustable waists !

Dresses, argh. If I tend towards 10/12 on bottom & need 14/16 on top, but my bust is same as my hips, then I'm a true hourglass while a "size 12" dress is meant for pear-shapes not hourglasses.

'Nothing feels as as good as skinny feels.'

When used as a personal insult, i bet its not nice no. But you can tern any physical attribute to an insult.

As long as skinny/slim/thin is the default setting for what is seen as healthy or beautiful, then it is not the same as fat.

Its not a competition btw. No one is trying to argue that just because you are in a smaller body that you wont have self esteem issues, have people comment on your body, struggle to find clothes that fit.

ITS.STILL.NOT.THE.SAME

Who gives a !?

OP wanted to know why she couldn’t by clothes that she liked, and we explained basic economics to her. She may ‘want’ it to be different but it’s not. She certainly can by good quality smart clothing, she just needs to be willing to pay more than high street prices for them.

OPs not been large before, so she didn’t know these things. And for her it’s likely temporary not least because she doesn’t like it and she’s been thinner and sounds like she’ll have the motivation to shift the excess weight.

And I wish her great speed in doing so, not least because she’s a new mum and she deserves the best of health for both of them, and carrying excess fat just is not healthy long term.

Who cares what fat and skinny people think of their respective labels, or even what society thinks of us. We are what we are, and we can change if we gave a F. But for the most we don’t, so we stay as we are.

What are you eating every day? Be honest, nobody’s going to take the piss, but there will be some good suggestions on where you’re going wrong
