You'd think the shops would work out what sizes sell fastest, and which sizes they sell the most of, and procure their stock accordingly.

But it doesn't seem to work like that. No, lets get the same number of each size and then be surprised when certain sizes sell out fastest.

That’s what the barcode tells them.

But they buy in advance so can’t akways adjust accordingly.

I was trying to say that the same person eating exactly the same calories each day can either lose weight, stay the same or put on weight depending on eating or not eating a particular food within those calories.

Not about comparing 2 different people on the same calories.

I notice in your example you used bread to demonstrate the problem. I cant eat bread, it causes terrible retention and swelling in my joints (not allergic) so it might be the water retention in that case

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/02/2023 15:46

I’ll say it again.

Clothes sizing pre 2006 was based on post war sizing. That’s why it was smaller.

However was no ‘standard’ size 12 etc. Each individual shop has their own set of measurements which reflect their target market. This is true now and was the same 40 years ago.

I’d love to know where people are finding these ‘charts’ as the only reliable standardised source is BSI and they cost a fortune, and are copyrighted so not freely available on Google.

The change came in 2006, but Mand S size 12 is very different to River Iskand size 12.

AND, for further info, all manufactured clothes are made with ‘ease’ in, to accommodate the different sizes within a size 12/14/etc.

This explains it a bit

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ease_(sewing).

But all the charts and arguments in the world make no difference. The key things are:

Accurate anthropological charts are not in the public domain.
Each shop has their own definition of a size measurement depending on their target
market.
The only change in measurements hapoened in 2006
Clorhes are made with ease to accommodate a range of sizes within set measurements.

Actually there was a pretty much standard size 10,12,14 in shops 40 years ago.

The only one that had a bigger size was M&S

I could ask someone to get me a dress in a size 10 and I knew it would fit.

The standard size was
32. 22. 34. size 10
34. 24. 36 size 12
36. 26. 38. Size 14

As some one who is supposedly a size 16

It doesn’t matter how low the label says I am. A fat arse is a fat arse I am not kidding anyone that I am a size 16 from the 80s

Also even from 40 years ago we haven’t grown that much taller.

Dd even though she towers over me she is still fitting into my old off the peg size 8/10 clothing.
But now it is called size 2/4

Could well be. For friend her downfall was whiskey but having mentioned this on another thread someone said their friend couldn’t eat broccoli it piled the weight in.

We are content. Short of a Type 2 diagnosis of shattered kneecaps, I don’t see either of us having the motivation to change our habits

I think this statement sums up the problem. The thinking that it won’t happen and if it does then you can ago something about it.

You can’t believe the pain I am in without any dramatic diagnosis. Friends and people I have met over the years who have been post menopausal all say/said the same thing.

Getting old is painful. The more weight you are carrying the more painful it is.

The issue is that by the time you realise that losing weight will ease your pain. Your bodies metabolism has slowed so much that your calorie intake to lose 1-2lb per week is below 900calories per day.

... and you can’t exercise efficient when you’re walking with sticks, and you can’t stand for long because of your back, so your life is spent on the sofa, the home office chair, or the bed.

Watching DH do all that now. I’m just pointing out to the thinner younger crowd that it is just a simple maths problem. If you ignore it, you become a FF like my husband and I and your health goes downhill fast.

I wish we could stop eating crap. It’s entirely a motivation issue. I fully understand that engineered foods are designed to affect our brains, that sugar ... you know what I’m saying. Bottom line though it is purely a motivation problem with a simple solution that we will not follow.

I get that with ice cream. I wish Co-op wouldn’t put ice cream in their frozen meal deals. It’s the only place I ever get ice cream. Don’t buy it in the supermarket shop.

nutellalover23 · 20/02/2023 16:41

Sounds like you are jealous of "skinny people"

rwalker · 20/02/2023 16:45

Your being ridiculous shops stock whats I. Demand and what they can sell
If size 24 was popular the shop would be full of them

Creatingusernamesismygame · 20/02/2023 16:49

I find the opposite. Struggle to get an 8 and there’s always larger sizes available. Even online it’s the same. Probably just where we shop.

Nolosomi · 20/02/2023 16:50

I can never find a size 8/10 in M&S or Tu etc. why are you posting this? It’s just not correct.

Annabella91 · 20/02/2023 17:00

I'm jealous that shops cater mainly for the skinny body type yes everyone needs clothes I also deserve to dress nice like skinny people do and feel good it seems like a privilege that thin people have to me.

But fashion designers and clothes shops aren’t benevolent organisations. They’re there to sell clothes and make money, they’re not responsible for the nation’s self perception or to enhance ‘body positivity’. If there’s a gap in the market why not start your own clothing brand?

Shops don't cater to skinny sizes though. Nothing seems to be made for anyone with a waist.

Buy online or import from the US if you don’t match the norm in the UK. That’s what I do, although I haven’t been tho the US since before Covid. But the UK retailers are not dumb, and they are not in the business of wasting money on what will not sell.

I’m sure there are seamstresses who will also tailor clothes to your needs. Google is your friend. But the world does not owe you anything, and from what you say, it’s a temporary thing only.

They don't. When I was skinny (bmi 16 to 18) I needed a 6 to fit my hips, which was baggy on the bum and legs. Nothing looked nice, I just looked unwell. I look much better at a slim healthy weight and it is much easier to find clothes that look good. It's not a privilege ffs!

Annabella91 · 20/02/2023 17:16

Well the shops can order more in then since its a popular size . I don't need to be leaving shops empty handed.

I am a size 8 top- 10 bottom, I have two teen daughters one a size 4 (she’s disabled, gastrostomy fed and has muscle wastage before anyone says that’s a privilege ffs!) other daughter a size 14, I would say the range of clothes available for my size 14 daughter is much wider and more fashionable, than it is for my size 4 daughter. Also really not liking that people think skinny is a privilege. I’m not skinny I have a strong muscular frame, and am 5”8 the amount of comments I receive when eating, particularly whilst at work or out and about is horrible. Comments on my portion size if I have birthday cake that’s been brought in, if I bring treats in for the office, it’s non stop, and I have never heard anyone comment on what other larger colleagues are eating ever!!

@Annabella91 please see what I’ve put about my size 4 daughter, really you need to rethink what privilege is. Not everyone that is a slimmer size is having an amazing time and looking fab, it can be due to health issues and I bet 100% you are more privileged than my daughter even if their may be more clothes on her size.
Maybe change where you are shopping if you can’t find the clothes you like in your size.

Why do you persist in saying skinny? It’s rude and insulting and derogatory. You’d do better to change your mindset than your clothes.

Comedycook · 20/02/2023 17:24

In the society we live in, the term "skinny" is not derogatory.

Okunevo · 20/02/2023 17:25

@Dachshund40 Sorry to hear about your daughter, I know from experience how difficult it can be when you can't find clothes that fit well when you are underweight and already self conscious about how you look x
