Why do they fail?

Because the diet is NOT sustainable long term.

Restriction for most people does not work.

We are fat because of our lifestyles. We refuse to make permanent changes to lead a healthier lifestyle. I have used all the excuses, childbirth, too busy, not enough money, but the bottom line is I eat too many carbs and I don’t do any exercise. Yeah I know my body metabolism has changed from when I was 20. But I was never stupid enough to think it would stay the same. I’m just comfortable with the way I am, and DH is fat too. We are content. Short of a Type 2 diagnosis of shattered kneecaps, I don’t see either of us having the motivation to change our habits.

I certainly do not expect clothing shops to run at a loss to pander to my fat ass. The one thing I would love to see is a crap tax on sweets and crisps and crap foods. It wouldn’t stop how much I spend, but it sure as hell would reduce the amount I could buy with my money.

But even then, it is not fair to overprice things for regular shoppers just because I cannot control my eating habits.

To lose weight, calories in must be less than calories out. I know it. I get to control both sides of that equation. I just don’t do anything about it.

When people talk about restricting eating what they mean is they don’t want to be stopped from over eating.

So you expect specially commissioned designs for oversized women? But, let me guess, you expect to pay the same price. Every single brand that has specifically designed clothes for larger women has failed, with no exceptions. Every single one. Why? Because we do not buy clothes like thin people buy clothes. Why? Because fat body shapes are dramatically different from one another and you cannot design clothes universally for larger women. I carry mine almost entirely on my stomach. Not on my arse. Not under my arms. Not on my back. Only a bit on my thighs. Not on my chest. I guarantee if I stand next to another short 18st 40yo we will look totally different and not be suited to the same clothes. You can’t say that about size 10.

So unless we are willing to pay the money, we are not entitled to ‘special’ treatment because we choose to live our lives the way we do. Buy your clothes from the US. They cater for a much larger population. Fly out there and spend to your hearts desire. Don’t try to do the same in the UAE cost you’ll find nothing that fits.

I do not expect the world to revolve around me or accommodate my size. It’s not in any way acceptable. I deal with it because I’m not willing to commission Asda to make me my very own clothes range just for me.

No need to be angry at an opinion. Even if you disagree with it. I think you misunderstood me a bit. I wasn't entirely talking about oversized ranges of clothes as you describe them.

Everyone is a different body shape, thin or not. Some slimmer people are short, some beautifully slim, others painfully thin. Some like their legs, others not.

Many people are a fairly ordinary size.

My view was that designs seem to cater for the slim and very tall. And not enough for the 'ordinary' or slightly shorter , slightly bigger person.
Sometimes a tweak here and there eg: ( sleeves on a larger size of strapless design that works well for smaller sizes ) might work.

I don't intend to set up some sort of clothing business and nor am I pitching to anyone to help me to do so.

I am quite happy where I get my clothes from in the UK. I am not oversized I am afraid.

But I feel for anyone who is. And it is a shame that someone who is finds it hard to find clothing to fit, if that is so.

I don't believe that all people who are oversized ( to use your expression) is because they choose to be so. You only have to look at steroids and what they do for peoples weight to realise that medicines are likely to be a one of several factors that can be involved in many peoples issues with weight gain.

bellac11 · 20/02/2023 14:13

What are the measurements for say 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20?

Surely they have stayed the same over time, or the actual measurements have increased?

Ilikeviognier · 20/02/2023 14:25

I don’t think measurements have stayed the same over time - no. As I said earlier, I was a size 10 in the 90s. I’m now easily a six and I’m the same size I was then.

Because thinness is the holy grail of Mumsnet. Next to making a chicken last 84 meals and being full after discussing an almond.

Key takeaways:

  • Plenty of people never left concentration camps
  • Many who did died from the extent of their malnutrition
  • Others developed binge eating disorders, as do many people today who severely restrict their food intake
  • The 'obesity crisis' isn't a simple fix of eat less, move more.
Getthekernowlook · 20/02/2023 14:27

Does anyone know what a size 10 was in 2010's and what that size is today?

I'm v interested x

Agree with the first 3 points, disagree with the fourth.

Thinness isn’t the ‘holy grail of mumsnet’ it’s the key to our NHS not being completely overburdened and a saving of £10 billion a year which the country can’t afford. You can’t pretend obesity doesn’t affect everyone.

Naunet · 20/02/2023 14:30

I love the idea that I’m privileged because you decided to eat more than I do! Those starving Africans are right privileged fuckers aren’t they?! 😂

Im a 6, almost always struggle to find my size. Stop adopting this annoying American attitude of fetishising victimhood, its peak first world problems.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/02/2023 14:30

They should be the same. The big resizing was in 2006. Prior to that they were using anthropometrics based on post war diets.

Well, thinness is not the holy grail of MN. Nor is making a chicken last 84 meals. Or being full after eating an almond. These things are not true and you make yourself look ridiculous by saying so.

I don't know the measurements, but I do know that I used to be 10/12 and I'm now an 8/10 and sometimes even a 6/8. I have not lost weight or got magically smaller. Clothes sizes have dramatically inflated in the past 10 to 15 years.

Getthekernowlook · 20/02/2023 14:35

Thanks! @ArseInTheCoOpWindow good to know :)

I remember there was a thread last month about how thin people are more wrinkly and have saggier breasts which was an uncomfortable read.

When people talk about restricting eating what they mean is they don’t want to be stopped from over eating.

I've never really thought about it like that but yes, it's a very good point.

For example, would not buying crisps/biscuits/chocolate/other treats and unhealthy foods in your weekly shop be 'restricting eating'?

Of course it wouldn't but a lot of people do tend to see it like that.

Getthekernowlook · 20/02/2023 14:36

@Stravaig That's similar to me!

Posts like this never fail to flush out people keen to tell us how small they or how disciplined their eating is. Good luck to them.

Mitfordian · 20/02/2023 14:39

@YourApplePie do you think any part of the 'obesity crisis' comes down to personal responsibility? Genuinely curious.

Also too many people clearly enraptured by US based fat-fluencers. There are issues with access to food/additives in food which contribute to the US obesity crisis which do not apply in this country.

If obesity could be fixed by 'eat less, move more', we'd have cleared it up long ago.

And if we could scrap BMI for everyone who isn't a white Belgian man from 200 years ago, that'd be smashing.

But it can be fixed with that, people just don’t want to do it. Diets work, people don’t.

Mitfordian · 20/02/2023 14:48

I really don't get the BMI demonisation. Yes, its old but it works pretty well at a population level. The BMI 'healthy' range is enormous! For me it's something like 3 stone! Enough leeway for anyone surely.

Can't stand this trend to be a victim and take no personal responsibility at all.

Well no because the reason that ‘doesn’t work’ is because people don’t stick to it, not because if they did it wouldn’t work.
