Boris Johnson wants a 2nd bash at being PM. We wouldn't. Would we?

Today BJ is stirring up the DUP to oppose Sunak's N Ireland proposals, whatever they may be. Surely there can't be a second chance for the idiot responsible for our current mess? There aren't enough stupid people in our country to let him in again I hope. Will he unseat Sunak?

I see what you're saying but Boris has a die hard fan base and I think if it was Boris Vs Starmer it would be a much closer race and Boris would win. He would have my vote anyway. His scandals don't bother me.

The fact that he's a self serving liar doesn't bother you?

He's a politician. I will never vote anyone if that bothered me.

"They're all as bad as each other" is how bad people keep winning.

What about lying to the Queen then? And the rest of it.. that not bother you either?

Didn't Starmer, on some polls, have a 15 to 20pt lead over Bojo, in August September last year before he resigned?

Which is why the Tories kicked him out, they'll bin Sunak too but i doubt it will be for Bojo... he is too divisive.

Its too close to the next GE anyway, even with his core supporters, the TOries have far too many issues to deal with, most of them of their own making, esp the strikes, the plan to blame Lab has backfired but i do wonder whether very soon they'll change tack and start talking pay.... was a huge mistake thinking you can turn the public off from nurses/nhs.

LexMitior · 21/02/2023 12:50

If Rishi Sunak is smart he will never even put his NI deal to the vote and he will just sign it. He can do that.

I doubt any of his Ministers will resign. That is just sabre rattling. How many people still want to be relitigating Brexit or even voting on it at the next election? Very few.

Those that do want to will have to either vote Conservative or Reform. They are part of the Brexit core but they definitely a minority now.

Johnson is likely to try and get a new seat, because he will lose in his current one.

But he will only return if he's useful and has got a majority in the parliamentary party. He hasn't got that because if he had, he'd be leader now.

I'm sure he will be a right pain in the backside to Sunak but that's all.

I don't care about the monarchy. I don't get the protectiveness people feel over this family.

I can't really explain why. I just like Boris. It's a gut thing.

I could never bring myself to vote labour. I think there are many who feel the same way who aren't captured by the polls. The polls always underestimate the conservatives.

His dishonest and self serving behaviour is far in excess of any other PM. If you can't see this your moral compass is probably similar to his.

No they don't. "Shy conservatives" are a myth conservative voters tell themselves before a drubbing.

ACynicalDad · 21/02/2023 13:26

I don't think mumsnet is the place to ask for a view on Boris that is indicative of the nation as a whole. I suspect his best chance of a comeback is as leader of the opposition, but suspect he will lose his seat unless he does a chicken run to a safe seat somewhere else.

I guess that is the reason why the likes of Johnson, Trump, Bolsonaro, Berlusconi etc get voted in.

Going by his personal polling, the sentiment on MN really isn't that unindicative.

I actually wouldn't put it past the basketcase that we call the tory party to give him another chance in desperation, but it says more about them than johnson's innate popularity.

LexMitior · 21/02/2023 13:30

Even Conservatives have a name for it. It's called Johnson Derangement Syndrome. You can suffer badly.

Nadine Dorries has it terminally.

Yes agree, i been eaten alive on here for suggesting Labour might not win the next GE....

Labours lead is large but there is also a lot of Don't Knows and i'm not sure people tell the truth to the pollsters either.

Starmer has no charisma or obv leadership skills, though tbh neither does Sunak.... Bojo does but i think if they went back to him, they'd def lose, he is too much of a comic figure now to recover from that.

Plentef · 21/02/2023 14:31

I’m a don’t know. Could go either way at the moment. I like Starmer and Sunak and Johnson!

Charisma doesn't solve a cost of living crisis. People can call Starmer boring all they want but being boring clearly hasn't hurt Labour's polling for the last year and a half.

Saying the tories still have a chance at the next election is essentially predicting that labour are going to massively fuck up between now and then, but nothing about Starmer's tenure so far indicates that.

This is an unpopular opinion but I hope the Tories win the next election. I hope they bring Boris back because he's their only chance of a victory. They need some of the magic juju he has considering the recent polls

Don't give a shit about the country then?

Never underestimate labour's ability to mess up. The only thing their party won't forgive is an wholehearted attempt to win an election.

Two years is more than enough time for things to change. Why two years ago people were telling me the conservatives will stay in power for many more terms and how there may never be a labour government again.

Look, either Starmer is boring and risk-averse or he's hot-headed and prone to political fuck-ups. You can't have it both ways. The last two years have shown that, if nothing else, he's good at not interrupting the tories while they slip on their one thousandth banana peel.

lazycats · 21/02/2023 15:36

Some YouGov snap polling:

Would you feel happy or unhappy if Boris Johnson returned as PM?

ALL BRITONS
Happy: 20%
Neither happy nor unhappy: 19%
Unhappy: 55%

CONSERVATIVE
Happy: 41%
Neither happy nor unhappy: 25%
Unhappy: 32%

But don't worry, I'm sure deep down they're all just shy boris fans and he's actually really popular.

Yougov have a handy graph that compares the popularity of different leaders.

yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2023/02/03/voting-intention-con-24-lab-48-31-jan-1-feb-2023

Turns out Rishi is currently as popular as Boris was in May. No idea what that tells us, other than Starmer is much prefered to either of them.
