To think some Facebook group admins are power mad martyrs?

I admin a Facebook group with some other lovely admins for women with a particular health condition. It’s all very low level work, and there is an occasional bun fight in the group it TBH us admins acknowledge that it requires very little sweating over. It’s just a Facebook group after all!

However I am a group member (not admin) in another group that started off as support for home schooling in lockdown and is now more of a generic support group around all types of education.

Because initially the group had a lot of families struggling through lockdown and facing various issues, the admins imposed a “Group members are not allowed to PM each other or exchange personal information”. I remember thinking how, though they have the best intentions WRT the safety of members, they cannot possibly impose that ridiculous rule.

however they STILL have the rule and love to remind members about it. They are posting what it seems like every single week saying something passive aggressive and angry like

“GROUP REMINDER

When you accepted the T&C’s of this group you accepted the rule that members CANNOT PM each other. We have YET AGAIN found out this rule has been broken!!!

Us admins give our free time, time away from our families, to run this group and we honestly feel exhausted trying to get members to keep up with basic rules. If you can’t follow the rules you know where the leave button is!!!”

I got kicked out today because I commented that they cannot impose a rule that disallows grown adults from messaging other people, let alone police it. And that they’d have more time if they didn’t spend so much of it chasing and dealing with silly rules.

I first got booted then got a PM from an admin saying I had “violated the laws and principles of the group” (😂) and also upset admins who work really hard to keep everyone happy and don’t appreciate their hard work being thrown back in their face. She asked for an apology.

I was feeling slightly childish and just replied with this emoji —> 😭

AIBU to think some Facebook admins are fucking nuts? They’re not managing a small country, it’s a Facebook group, and the weird power trips are utterly baffling. It’s not the first time I’ve seen something like this either and it spoils simple enjoyment of these groups.

I was part of a cake decorating group like that. I just left as I couldn’t be arsed.

I’ve seen people put on their CV that they are admin or moderator of a Facebook group.

DonnaBanana · 18/02/2023 14:38

The less important a position of responsibility is, the more seriously someone will take it.

Rantypanties · 18/02/2023 14:39

Yes, the admin of a local Spotted page is a power hungry prick. Bans anyone who disagrees with him and charges businesses to advertise because of all the hard work that goes into the page 🙄

Oysterbabe · 18/02/2023 14:39

You should have said

Please don't PM me, it's against the group rules.

well, people may be joining this group on the understanding that they are not going to get personal messages, and then get upset and feel intruded upon when they do, so if that is the rules ofthe group, then yes, I see why they dont want them broken

GoodChat · 18/02/2023 14:41

To be fair you signed up to the group knowing the rules, as did everyone else.

SpinningFloppa · 18/02/2023 14:41

I’m on a single parents group and there is a particular admin on there that turns off commenting for me sometimes if I don’t agree with every single post on there! Totally over the top I could understand if I was swearing or being rude but that’s never the case it’s basically if you don’t agree with the person when surely people post asking for views not just people to agree with them

It’s a Facebook group, not a job. They cannot tell anyone what to do outside the confines of the group

Just to make you laugh - I’m in a FB hamster group just like this

power mad admins!

user1477391263 · 18/02/2023 14:45

What’s the health condition?

It would make more sense to just quietly PM a few people (ha ha) and suggest setting up a parallel group without the loony rules.

VioletaDelValle · 18/02/2023 14:46

Oh good yes.
The admin on our village group is awful, he doesn't even live in the village!!

Stellaris22 · 18/02/2023 14:47

If I joined a group where it specifically said no PMs of members I'd be annoyed at being PMd, it's a form of harassment and I'd report it to admin.

Code of conducts exist for a reason, people are being n these groups for advice/fun so outright arguing should be stopped.

TheGoogleMum · 18/02/2023 14:47

Yeah I get annoyed in some other people's groups. I've got my own group, everyone in it seems nice and there's there's no fights yet! I am quite reasonable. One my moderators annoys me a little mind

AnotherAppleThief · 18/02/2023 14:47

There's one that's run by a guy who owns a website that lots of people use (including lots of you here probably). By all accounts he 'bought' it from previous admin and now his minions lord about with messages about it being run and owned by XXXX.

If anyone owns a Facebook group it's Mark Zuckerberg! Plebs.

user1477391263 · 18/02/2023 14:48

Oh sorry, it looks like the mad group is the one that’s about education.

Oysterbabe · 18/02/2023 14:48

I think A LOT of groups are like this.
I'm in a crochet one that takes so long to approve posts and they reject them as often as they can. They rejected a picture of a spider I crocheted because it might upset members who are scared of spiders.

user1477391263 · 18/02/2023 14:48

What is the purposed reason for the PM ban?

What is the purposed reason for the PM ban?

I believe it’s because in lockdown a lot of families had struggles with anxiety, loneliness etc and they felt people were in a vulnerable position to overheard with strangers.

Which is fair enough.

But it’s still just a Facebook group. And you can’t micro manage grown adults.

And if you Faldo get a PM just ignore it FFS, no need to cry about it

whats wrong with that, it does take a lot of time and effort to manage a group.

Why should he spend time adding everyones business for free?
whats in it for him? Bet he never gets any thanks either just hundreds of people sending their adverts to him everyday.
