My mother is staying with us for a couple of nights- she lives 100 miles away. We get on Ok but 48 hours is definitely my limit...

Just opened my cutlery drawer to find she's swapped my cutlery from Knives- Forks-Spoons (left to right) to Spoons - Forks - Knives. When I asked her why she simply said "because it's the right way and it was irritating me before". WTAF.

Critique my parenting mother, feel free to judge the state of my garden but stay the fuck away from my cutlery drawer!

Knives forks spoons (L to R) is the ONLY way. You don’t say ‘ooh, can you get me the forks and knives and spoons’ do you? No, it’s always ‘knives and forks (and spoons)’.

notbloodylikely · 18/02/2023 19:12

Although my mother rearranges my dishwasher if she’s here…

TribeD · 18/02/2023 19:18

L - R

Spoons, forks knives

My DM gives me the bloody rage though, she always faffs about with my utensils drawer and puts the wrong things in there. Scissors do not go in my utensils drawer mother!!!

Craftybodger · 18/02/2023 19:29

Adding o the controversy, L to R, serving spooned and big forks together, small forks, dessert spoons, small knives and then big knives, teaspoons lie across the bottom!

NameChangeFor2023 · 18/02/2023 19:57

Not bothered about spoons but forks should be to the left of knives. If you have a proper marked up organiser, I believe it's always spoons, forks, knives.

Burn her at the stake!

notbloodylikely · 19/02/2023 09:01

Serving spoons, teaspoons, spare set of cutlery and smaller kids’ size cutlery all have separate sections.

nickelbabe · 19/02/2023 09:35

Sorry but she's right.

This thread was the definitive argument about the subject, and as you can see, I was the last poster so I won the argument, which is spoons-forks-knives

Forks, knives, spoons for me. As that's how it is set out on the table left to right, if it's a spoon that goes with your meal, or spoon at top if it's for dessert. Spoon end at fork end.

The main issue though is that in someone else's house you follow their pattern, or stick them all in a jar or whatever else they do, if you are putting cutlery away.

purplehair1 · 19/02/2023 09:54
  1. who cares? There’s no ‘right way’ (this to the other commenters unless they are joking which I don’t think they are, sadly).
  2. just put them back your way with no comment and keep doing so until she gets the message it’s not her house.

Yes. Knife to right of fork (spoons I’m less fussy about)
Does the op and their lot pick their cutlery up from the drawer with crossed hands or something‽

IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 19/02/2023 11:56

Forks, spoons, knives. Only correct way
