My mother is staying with us for a couple of nights- she lives 100 miles away. We get on Ok but 48 hours is definitely my limit...

Just opened my cutlery drawer to find she's swapped my cutlery from Knives- Forks-Spoons (left to right) to Spoons - Forks - Knives. When I asked her why she simply said "because it's the right way and it was irritating me before". WTAF.

Critique my parenting mother, feel free to judge the state of my garden but stay the fuck away from my cutlery drawer!

Ooh I’m forks, knives, spoons left to right… I’m such a kook 🤣🤣🤣

Me too 😀

Oldnproud · 17/02/2023 08:21

Mine is knives, forks, spoons front to back, and the large carving knives at the very back, but that's because the drawer is not wide enough for them to go left to right / right to left.

I was a bit peeved too when my mother suggested that I should turn them around.

Not half as peeved as I am when she ignores my request not to put away any kitchen utensils unless she knows exactly where they go, though. Her 'helpfulness' drives me crazy when I'm next in the middle of cooking and have to search the whole bloody kitchen for something that I need at that moment!

Tinkerbyebye · 17/02/2023 08:23

She’s right, sorry

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 17/02/2023 08:27

It's knives, forks, spoons. This is the way.

@Oldnproud my mum does the same thing. I remember the look of absolute confusion on her face when I told her that the beaters for my electric whisk live in the same drawer as the whisk and not on the opposite side of the kitchen in a random pot.

stopringingme · 17/02/2023 08:47

@bloodymary100

Knives, forks and spoons is the correct way.

Do you have a key to her house, drive over there while she is busy with your house and move her cutlery around and her cupboards, then go home, say nothing and let her find out when she gets home - I am joking (sort of ) 🤣

bloodymary100 · 17/02/2023 08:55

DH doesn't see the issue so he's going too Grin

She did leave the teaspoons alone, and has a 38year unblemished record, so I'm considering giving her a final chance.

I'm forks-spoons-knives....

I'm rushing off to the kitchen drawer to correct my mistake 🤣

Oh thank goodness- I'm not the only one. Forks-spoons-knives in my house and I'm
Willing to die on that hill.

DungareeDana · 17/02/2023 08:58

When my Mam comes to stay my sister and I will text each other to ask where my Mam keeps her chopping board or whatever we can't find as she puts everything where she thinks it should be rather than where it goes.

LlynTegid · 17/02/2023 08:59

I hope soup spoons and other spoons have not been mixed up.

That is almost as bad as standing on the left side of an escalator,

YukoandHiro · 17/02/2023 09:04

Omg you are right, she is very very wrong.

JMSA · 17/02/2023 09:06

Forks first, then knives and spoons. I can't imagine it being any other way!

MrWhippersnapper · 17/02/2023 09:07

My mil rearranged my fridge

inappropriateraspberry · 17/02/2023 09:09

Yep, she is right! 😂
Very odd that she would change it, although saying that I will swap people's loo roll so it hangs at the front!

inappropriateraspberry · 17/02/2023 09:11

Also, our knives need the longer section in the tray so only have one place to fit anyway.

Orland0 · 17/02/2023 09:12

I can’t believe people actually separate their cutlery out, mine’s just in a muddled heap in the drawer. Now I think about it ‘muddled heap’ is very much a metaphor for my entire life 😦

JaceLancs · 17/02/2023 09:13

Due to shape of drawer I’m knives at front then forks then spoons!

Minikievs · 17/02/2023 09:14

You're both wrong. It's forks knives spoons

Ludo19 · 17/02/2023 09:14

L-R knives, forks, spoons, then dessert spoons/forks and teaspoons in the compartment below them.

LunaAndHerMoonDragons · 17/02/2023 09:15

BillyMack · 17/02/2023 07:26

Yep, this is the only right way. 😁

100% this, OP you and Mum are both wrong, you both have truly appalling cutlery etiquette.

inappropriateraspberry · 17/02/2023 09:16

Actually ours is soup and latte spoons, spoons, forks, knives, cocktail stirrers and serving spoons!

slamfightbrightlight · 17/02/2023 09:21

This is one of those things where I’ve always assumed that everyone does it the same (forks-knives-spoons, naturally) and I am shocked to my core that anybody would start their drawer knives first. Delinquent behaviour.

Mumoffairy · 17/02/2023 09:23

KangarooKenny · 17/02/2023 07:18

She’s right though

This! :)

newrubylane · 17/02/2023 09:23

My mum just chucks stuff in the cutlery tray haphazardly, so it's all jumbled up. It drives me nuts. I frequently end up tidying hers up, and she hasn't disowned me yet...

TheFeistyFeminist · 17/02/2023 09:23

Who knew the order of cutlery was so contentious?! I'd be annoyed at someone, anyone, having the temerity to impose their will in my house.

About cutlery, toilet roll hanging, child rearing.

Grrrrrrrr!

MmeDefrag · 17/02/2023 10:23

I never knew how strongly I felt about this until I found myself reading the thread through my fingers and muttering “no, no, no”!

it’s forks, knives spoons, obviously. All of you who do it any other way, well Lent is coming up and it’s a good time to repent in sackcloth and ashes before going forth and rearranging your cutlery drawers.
