My mother is staying with us for a couple of nights- she lives 100 miles away. We get on Ok but 48 hours is definitely my limit...

Just opened my cutlery drawer to find she's swapped my cutlery from Knives- Forks-Spoons (left to right) to Spoons - Forks - Knives. When I asked her why she simply said "because it's the right way and it was irritating me before". WTAF.

Critique my parenting mother, feel free to judge the state of my garden but stay the fuck away from my cutlery drawer!

Her behaviour is oddly audacious! In my home we wouldn't have noticed. Except for the teaspoons, you could swap the others around and we wouldn't notice.

I have my cutlery her way but if someone did that to me I’d swap them back something like Forks, Knives, Teaspoons and say that I much prefer the new way.

Forks obviously go to the left of knives as that is how they are traditionally placed on the table. Spoons could arguably go either side, but more logical to go on the right of the fork and knife as puddings follow the main course and sequences (written English, music etc) go from left to right. This is science

I know this is lighthearted but I wouldn't let my mother change my cutlery draw around to suit her. She tends to be a bit invasive in my home anyway so this wouldn't go down well with me, even though it's not a big deal in the scheme of things.

OP, why don't you suggest a long hike / full day of soft play with the DC / deep clean of the house? Since she's so helpful, and clearly bored enough to be rearranging drawers 😊

Get up in the night and flip all the cutlery so you have handles up instead of handles down?

(But it is spoon - fork - knife from left to right. <<runs>>)

I do it the same way as your mum, but I wouldn’t change someone else’s around! I mean, maybe if the drawer was completely empty and I was refilling it from the dishwasher I might haviutllay do it my way, but wouldn’t go out of my way to intentionally change it.

You have to watch the likes of me though; I have been tempted to swap other people’s loo roll if it’s hanging with the free end on the underside…
