What did she want people to do?

Recently went to spectate at a sporting event and we got on the tram to get there. It was rammed, we expected it to be rammed. It's a busy event.

The tram was standing room only, and it was busy Ie sardines.

This pregnant woman was standing in the middle of the aisle she wouldn't move further down so there was a huge gap behind her. She didn't look that pregnant tbh, she kept shouting. im pregnant, I need space, you all need to back off, I'm pregnant I need a seat im pregnant I can't be touched
The only people sat down were kids and old people and the families didn't offer her a seat. The guard came down and told her she needed to move down into the gap or get off. She decided to get off and then asked if the trams were going to be busy all day?

She genuinely wanted random strangers to not go to the rugby because she enforced a halo of 'im pregnant and no one can be near me'

Surely if you're that precious about being pregnant you'd get a taxi?

I have a profoundly disabled child who can't cope with busy places. I avoid them for his sake and for other people's.

And that’s great. He’s a child.

What happens if he ever goes out on his own as an adult? And finds himself in a situation he was unprepared for and I’ll equipped to handle

He can't go out on his own and never will, he needs 24/7 supervision. If he did somehow end up on his own , there would be no need for speculation, he is very obviously disabled.

Yes, it's disappointing that no one offered this woman a seat but assuming she is NT (mh issues seem likely though) shouting in a public place generally just puts people on edge and makes them think 'wtf do I do here.'

Multiple miscarriages
learning difficulties
worried she was about to vomit
suffers claustrophobia
neuro diverse

just a handful of possible reasons

Really, you never know who you will meet when you leave your front door.

But you are aware that there can be very vulnerable adults, whether learning difficulties, mental health or ND that will be able to go out alone but may also find themselves in situations they find very difficult to deal with

Ursuladevinia82 · 16/02/2023 14:19

So you do acknowledge this woman was likely suffering mental health difficulties

and yet you still think that she was unreasonable to be on a busy train and that she should have had the sense to get off and get a taxi?

SuchandSuchandSuch · 16/02/2023 14:20

Choconut · 16/02/2023 10:06

Why didn't she just quietly say to someone 'I'm pregnant and not feeling well, would you mind if I sat down?' rather than blocking the aisle and yelling it? Also why didn't she back down the aisle into the space if people were getting too close? She wasn't wearing a mask or going on about covid so that argument doesn't stack up. Sounds like an entitled pregnant woman to me.

Probably because she was upset and not behaving perfectly - we don't really know the answer to this. But the pregnant woman clearly needed a bit of compassion and kindness. It's just basic humanity. Even the people on this thread, who are generally supportive of this poor women, are talking about pregnancy fragility and such like: so many names to put women down and undermine them. I don't normally post on threads like this but there was something about the OPs post that has prompted me to do so. It was smug unpleasant and gloating - shame on them and all the other name callers.

DappledThings · 16/02/2023 14:22

So she was capable of using her words to shout weirdness about not being able to be touched but not able to use her words to request a seat?

She sounds ridiculous.

I don't think the train was a good place for her, no. Whether she was 'unreasonable' or not depends on why she was shouting. If she is just a precious expectant mother with no mh issues or disabilities, of course it's not ok to be shouting at people on a tram. Otherwise, it's more understandable but makes me feel even more strongly that her being on the tram was not beneficial for her.

Precisely

a busy train was not an appropriate place for a pregnant mother with mental health difficulties or ND and suffers in environments like that.

But

We all know that sometimes life throws us a curve ball and we find ourselves in an unexpected scenario. You and I… no problem. Those ND, learning difficulties or mental health difficulties… problem.

So my default is… I see a pregnant woman shouting and highly agitated… I’m going to cut her some slack and presume she’s struggling rather than being unreasonable

you think otherwise 🤷‍♀️

Rollingaroundinmud · 16/02/2023 14:38

Even if she did have mental health issues it still doesn't make it okay to shout on the tram. That's why the conductor stepped in to give her an option either step back and make room or get off. I doubt she will feel good about herself after the incident, Hopefully, she will take something away with her and go about her daily business differently next time.

That’s the “beauty” of mental health illnesses… often the response to a stressful situation is not appropriate.

But what they are enduring means what is “appropriate” is well and truly on the back burner

Dominoeffecter · 16/02/2023 14:41

I think what she was shouting is relevant, it wasn’t abusive also we only have OPs word for the fact she was indeed shouting.

Dominoeffecter · 16/02/2023 14:44

We also don’t know if her journey was essential or whether she could even afford a taxi.

The conductor had to get involved and give her options.

Yes, and? That’s because they wanted her to squeeze down not because she was yelling abuse.

That's where you're bringing it to she didn't shout abuse. She made a nuisance of herself if the conductor had to step in.

Dominoeffecter · 16/02/2023 14:57

A nuisance ☺️ The conductor wanted her to squeeze down so they could ram as many people on as possible. The reason I mention what she shouted is in response to all the posts insinuating she was screeching unhinged abuse.

None of us were there. God knows why all of you keep arguing the toss over sheer speculation. Seems a waste of time repeatedly hammering your imaginary point home.

DulcetTones · 16/02/2023 15:05

She was being unreasonable to expect someone to give up their seat. Making a request is borderline, imo. There's no way for anyone to know how much someone may "need" a seat, and someone demanding a seat isn't always proof that they need it more than you do. Many people who aren't pregnant need to be seated every bit as much as a pregnant woman might, and it may not be visibly apparent.

She wasn't unreasonable to leave the tram, if she felt uncomfortable standing the whole way, and I wouldn't say she was unreasonable to not get an expensive taxi, either.

So much hyperbole on this thread. And none of you have the first clue what you're wringing your hands over because you weren't there.
Haven't you all got something more satisfying to do?

Maybe she was in distress, maybe she's a self-absorbed diva. Who knows and really...who cares?
