@ismu

I don't think opposing it on the basis of protecting the rights and safety of women is morally difficult at all.

I don't think it's possible to actually find any watertight reasons to oppose this legislation, it's a complete failure of all progressive parties to find a way forward which meets everyone's needs. So it's a great way to destroy your political opponents.

FrancescaContini · 15/02/2023 10:59

And the same day as the news about the Sandyford Clinic??

hryllilegur · 15/02/2023 10:59

This is indicative of how poor Scottish politics is.

The Scottish government has performed so poorly that the first minister is resigning and the leader of what should be a major opposition party insists this is not a day for ‘political attacks’.

He’s clearly confused something like the death of a head of state (where it would be inappropriate to bang on about politics) with a political leader having to resign because she and her government have been dreadful.

Not having rapists in women's prisons seems pretty tight to me

FadoFado · 15/02/2023 11:00

GoodChat · 15/02/2023 10:51

Just like the rest of the UK then!

consistent polling indicates that the electorate looks favourably on the Westminster opposition.

FrancescaContini · 15/02/2023 10:59

And the same day as the news about the Sandyford Clinic??

And that there are currently 4 male murderers in the female prison.

smileladiesplease · 15/02/2023 11:00

I wonder how this will now effect Drakford and Starmer agenda on trans rights

TheKeatingFive · 15/02/2023 10:55

I don’t agree with this. If you want to be electable, it has been an impossible position. Whatever you personally believe, at least until recently coming out as GC would end you political career (at least until the wind change).

I disagree. No need to foreground it at all. it's not actually something that the majority of the electorate have strong opinions on (until they were confronted with the prospect of rapists in women's prisons that is).

I definitely agree that you don’t need to die on that hill in the way she has chosen to do. I do think it’s been untenable to be openly GC.

ismu · 15/02/2023 11:02

@Botw1 that's actually nothing to do with GRR or NS. It's been UK wide for years. What I mean is it's impossible for politicians to put up an effective argument against GRR. It went through process for six years! It's a failure all round.

Penguinduvetcover · 15/02/2023 11:03

get the super injunctions lifted, get her investigated, let the truth be known!

Botw1 · 15/02/2023 11:04

Except its not impossible

Or at least, if people hadn't been so determined to favour imaginary trans rights over actual women's rights, it wouldn't have been

thehorsehasnowbolted · 15/02/2023 11:07

Do we know who'll take her post?

Blessedwithsunshine · 15/02/2023 11:07

A news conference is just starting on all the usual channels if anyone wants to listen or watch Nicola Sturgeon’s speech now.

No not yet

SainteCroissante · 15/02/2023 11:08

I really don't think she is quitting because of the GR bill, but because she does not see a way forward with the Scottish independence referendum.
I did not agree with her on either the push for another Indyref, nor the gender recognition bill, but I did agree with her (and the SNP) on a lot of other issues, and thought she was one of the better politicians, not that the bar is very high...
She's been the longest-serving first minister, maybe took a queue from Ardern (NZ) and just had enough.

Is Alex coming back?? If so he has voiced strong views about the safety of women’s spaces.

😂

Helleofabore · 15/02/2023 11:00

And that there are currently 4 male murderers in the female prison.

Yes. That too.

What a shocking mess.

Biker47 · 15/02/2023 11:11

Good fucking riddance.

NyanBinaryJohn · 15/02/2023 11:13

"I'm the first female first minister"

Is she sure about that?

FrancescaContini · 15/02/2023 11:13

Surely, surely there will be a public inquiry into the atrocious mess caused by the SNP’s unwavering stance on gender ideology? Not just prisons but schools, healthcare and all those teenagers duped into thinking they could “change sex” as per the information that’s coming out about the Sandyford clinic?

getitupyenic · 15/02/2023 11:13

Wonderful. Get it right the way up ye, you incompetent autocratic wee arse.

Discharging the elderly into care homes with covid, ferries, bottle return scheme, A9 dualling, health and education - everything the SNP has been involved in recently under her watch has been an utter shambles.

Humza Useless to follow now please.

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 15/02/2023 11:14

This is not JUST about gender recognition. There are lots of other factors which have combined to bring her down.

2 Ferries which should have cost £72m and been finished years ago, now cost £500m and not finished.

Questions about missing money from SNP funds which nobody seems to know the whereabouts of.

Bottle deposit scheme due to be rolled out in August well before similar schemes in the rest of the UK and which would have led to Scottish companies not being able to sell competitively in the rest of the UK, or non-Scottish companies having to stick 20p on their products in Scotland. Several SNP MSPs have asked for a pause on this legislation in the last 24 hours.

Plummeting support for independence in the wake of the fuss about Isla Bryson and Tiffany Scott - this was a real "wtf is going on" moment for many Scottish people who are not particularly engaged in politics and couldn't belief that they were being asked to accept that the rapist in the pink leggings was a woman without question.

Plus all the other backrgound stuff like teachers' strikes, NHS waiting lists etc etc etc.

Hedjwitch · 15/02/2023 11:14

Jumped before pushed. Financial irregularities and fraud allegations all over the place

hamstersarse · 15/02/2023 11:14

LOLs

She was a great politician brought down by being captured by an ideology of idiocy
