Sonographer unsure on sex

I had my 20 week scan last week and I can't get what the Sonographer said out of my head. He was pretty sure it was a girl but he wasn't certain he said there's nothing obvious between legs but he couldn't get a clear enough shot to confirm for sure. He said he would be very surprised if baby turnt out to be a boy. I'm so nervous to go out buying girly bits🥲

You get the pleasure of having a surprise on the day they are born.

Go with it. It's a good way to do it.

It always appalls me how many parents want to genderfy their child. In 2023 it's really bloody depressing

I agree, and I think it's very strange that people still consider certain colours for babies to be "wrong" or "right" in 2023!

29 years ago when I had my first, they weren't allowed to tell you
I bought white newborn sleep suits and vests
Just buy cream beige etc, then if it bothers you( it shouldn't) put a pink/ blue cardigan hat on
The main reason for the scan is to check for anomalies.

My sonographer said she only ever gives an 80% chance that it's a girl, because it's based on NOT seeing something, but it could be tucked away. Whereas when you actually see a penis, you can be a lot more sure that it's a boy.

NIPT blood test is the only way to know for sure.

@Parker231 @Maireas some people still like designs of whatever specifically aimed at girls etc it's not a crime! I'm assuming that's what OP meant by planning for whichever sex her baby is.

Agree with this. But I am possibly quite old fashioned as my eldest is 19. I also didn't buy bedding/ clothing until around 30 weeks as was superstitious.

Neither of us suggested it was a crime.
It's just sad that she's had such a strong reaction to the results because she wanted to buy female identifiable baby clothes.
Her choice. Some of us on here consider it unnecessary to be so bothered at this point. Almost as if you have to dress babies in sex identifiable clothing.
Hopefully she has a healthy baby.

Why should a pink babygro with a rabbit on be aimed at a girl and a blue babygro with a dinosaur on be aimed at a boy? Society has it wrong from day one.

tiredhadenough · 15/02/2023 10:01

@Cuppasoupmonster really? She needs to buy loads of stuff of a specific colour?

We bought a pack of babygros, had already been given cardigans by friends and then had loads of stuff given. I really enjoyed buying things as my baby grew. But then i hate seeing new born babies in 'proper' clothes. They always look so scratchy and uncomfortable and more for the parents insta accounts than the thought of what their baby may be feeling.

Had a car seat, a buggy and my boobs. So much stuff gets wasted because you don't know if it will be a big or small baby.

FFS just buy a couple of bits and not stress out about if it's a boy or a girl. Totally unnecessary 🤷🏼‍♀️

Cuppasoupmonster · 15/02/2023 10:11

Yes @tiredhadenough that’s exactly what I said 🙄 not. Some people like buying stuff for their babies, I do 🤷🏼‍♀️ But then I can acknowledge you’re far more cool and zen and relaxed than me with your 2 gifted babygrows and your boobs (what the hell your boobs have to do with it I have no idea 😂)

tiredhadenough · 15/02/2023 10:15

@Cuppasoupmonster ooh you should see my boobs and then you'd know 🤣🤣🤣

Not cool and zen, like I said I bought some babygros and we were gifted some stuff. Once I saw my baby we then bought stuff. To be honest I was always expecting the worst so wanted to know my baby was in my arms before buying lots of stuff. I didn't want to buy prep machines or loads of bottles that could be a reminder of something that never happened.

I've never held out much for the whole blue/pink thing anyway.

LuvSmallDogs · 15/02/2023 10:23

My parents didn't get told a gender for me, but mum "had a feeling" I was a boy. So she stocked up on loads of charity shop/hand me downs from friends that were for boys - so much so I was mostly in boy clothes until I was 2! It did me no harm, and even after that I got some boy clothes from her mates.

If I were you, I'd just get gender neutral-ish stuff to cover the first few months then see how you go. Gender neutral stuff isn't always cream/beige, you can get some nice bright rainbow stuff too.

Cuppasoupmonster · 15/02/2023 10:24

@tiredhadenough well that’s you isn’t it? Ever thought maybe other people like to do things differently? Or aren’t gifted as much stuff as you were lucky enough to receive?

tiredhadenough · 15/02/2023 10:28

@Cuppasoupmonster yes of course but what does it matter if it's pink or blue!! That's my point! Why does that need to be known? Do people really spend loads of money on stuff that may never be worn as the baby is a couple of pounds bigger than expected?

Maybe people have more money so it doesn't matter to them.

As I said we bought a few bits but there is so much stuff which is suitable whatever the sex of the baby knowing it's sex really didn't matter.

I was just trying to reassure OP that they didn't need loads of stuff if they were so worried about dressing it in pink or blue 🙄

ciaocupcake · 17/02/2023 14:53

@Parker231 why not? What effect could it possibly have on a newborn that they're wearing a pink baby grow? Why is this so bad. I personally didn't enjoy it when my dc wore unisex clothes and was called a boy.
I enjoyed having a girl and was proud to have a girl so I put dresses on her. I like dresses too, why not buy boys dresses instead of suggesting dressing a baby in pink or dresses etc will somehow be detrimental for the baby.

No problem at all with pink babygros - my DT’s wore plenty of them - both DS and DD.
