Sonographer unsure on sex

Anonymousoneo · 12/02/2023 23:06

I had my 20 week scan last week and I can't get what the Sonographer said out of my head. He was pretty sure it was a girl but he wasn't certain he said there's nothing obvious between legs but he couldn't get a clear enough shot to confirm for sure. He said he would be very surprised if baby turnt out to be a boy. I'm so nervous to go out buying girly bits🥲

Don’t you get the blood test to confirm sex? I’m in Australia. I paid $800 to find out if my baby had any chromosomal abnormalities and it also advised the sex.

Is this not a thing in the UK? I had this test performed through my GP because I hadn’t planned on seeing the obstetrician if the baby had a significant chromosomal abnormality.

The blood test is sent off to the UK but it doesn’t take to long to get the results back.

If you want a second opinion you can pay for a private scan.

Otherwise buy neutral colours until the baby is born.

No need to buy any neutral clothing - just buy what colour/design you like

Private scan or neutral stuff.

Or wait til the baby is born and dress it in clean clothes of the correct size. 🤷‍♀️

DS is the first male cousin after a string of girls and he’s currently sporting a lovely rose pink babygro with a neon yellow cat on it; he looks lovely.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/02/2023 10:22

What's the rush? Your baby isn't going to be born for months.

Just buy essentials for a newborn, then if you do have a girl, then you can buy your 'girly bits', whatever they are.

CecilyP · 13/02/2023 10:31

OP - get a private scan, and if you'd like to buy some typical girls clothing for her then do that and enjoy it.

Surely a private scan would be more expensive than buying 2 lots of baby clothes; one lot for each sex. You could even buy them just before the birth, keep the tags on and exchange after the baby is born. In reality, you might as well just buy white babygros in the first size which will be outgrown so quickly, you can then dress the baby in the next size In clothes you want. Possibly also keep the tags on in case the baby is too large to fit them.

The 20 week check is for checking for birth defects and is a health check. Getting any information on the sex of the baby is not the purpose and many hospitals won't state it at all as too many litigious parents have gone mad on pink/blue and then tried to sue if it was wrong.
If you want a scan to get the sex you'll have to pay for a private one. This is normal.

Yep this.

Everyone saying private scan - NO SCAN IS 100%

But still, baby might be in better position to see.

littlebird13 · 13/02/2023 10:39

I didn't know with either of my babies what the sec was.
It's a wonderful surprise and babies don't need pink or blue. Just buy white/grey/cream.

Wonderfulbutwornout · 13/02/2023 10:39

How about just being grateful your baby appears to be healthy!
For some of us at 20 week scans, that isn’t the case.

RoomOfRequirement · 13/02/2023 10:43

If this is all you have to be NERVOUS about after your 20 week scan, get over yourself and think about how lucky you are. Some of us get horrific news at our 20 week scan.

RampantIvy · 13/02/2023 11:20

It helped me think of a name

We just drew up a shortlist of boys and girls names @plumduck.

Private scans can be pretty cheap - I think my first one was £35 on “deal” and the standard price was £70. Plus, it’s actually a nice scan experience and you get to see more than just the sex - with ours we got a 4d video of her “waving” and we also got to see her in a non medical setting. They were also able to settle my fears about certain chromosomal abnormalities - we had a slightly elevated risk of these but they were able to check for things that they’d normally do at the 20 week scan a little sooner, which reassured us earlier than we would have been reassured if we waited for the NHS (we had a history of many miscarriages so we’re very much needing reassurance)

You can get the harmony test done but it’s about £500 (if I remember correctly), whereas private scans are commonly under £50.

You can get the sneak peek test done which is purely for sex - I think I paid £60 for it.

Ladyofthesea · 13/02/2023 11:33

The minute ypur baby is here you can buy/order gendered clothes. Most are in baby grows at first anyway, plus there is more choice in gendered clothes in slightly bigger sizes. Just don't buy too much and keep some money aside to splash out on a few cute outfits once they're here.

Parker231 · 13/02/2023 12:13

Every time I read one of these threads I wonder how much longer is it going to take to get rid of gender clothing for babies. Pink - princess, cute, fairies, kittens. Blue - astronaut, firefighter, engines, sport. This mentality carries on through life and is so wrong.

JustDanceAddict · 13/02/2023 12:19

Just buy neutrals. I wasn’t allowed to know the sec of my baby as the hospitals didn’t give out the info 20+ years ago. I was convinced I was having one sex and it turned out to be the other - due to a minor Health condition they picked up in utero which is much more common in boys. I wanted the surprise though, and same for baby no.2 although i was right that time due to having extra scans and the registrar giving a big hint! By then they asked if I wanted to properly know, but we said no.

Yes you can have certain blood tests.

I had one of mine done on the NHS as I was in the trial before it became more wide range, however the test results you receive you only tell you what is the likelihood of your baby having certain chromosomal abnormalities.

So while the lab would have known my baby's sex the doctors treating me, the midwife and the sonographer didn't know.

Exactly this. And it starts before we even exit the womb, ffs.

Couldn't agree more.

It's even worse when you try and buy toddler clothes you get told by shop assistants in some shops that is the boys or girls section.

ciaocupcake · 13/02/2023 12:35

I'd buy neutral clothes then a few girls outfits very close to due date so you can take them back if they're wrong.

MelchiorsMistress · 13/02/2023 12:36

Newborns look cuter in white anyway.

RedToothBrush · 13/02/2023 12:42

You get the pleasure of having a surprise on the day they are born.

Go with it. It's a good way to do it.

It always appalls me how many parents want to genderfy their child. In 2023 it's really bloody depressing

Why buy ‘girl outfits’ - what is a girl outfit?
Just just buy babygros in pink, blue, green, yellow, red etc. Baby will look lovely in any colour.

How could outfits for a baby possibly be "wrong"? A baby boy won't come to harm in a pink vest or babygro!
