...the UK is becoming? The scenes in Liverpool were shocking and I fear this is just the beginning.

There are lots of countries that are safer than the UK.

Yes but they’re not the countries the migrants are coming from.

How many times?

Which countries do you mean?
China?
Sri Lanka?
Pakistan?

Correct.

Cuppasoupmonster · 13/02/2023 12:04

God this is utterly painful. Let me spell it out for you. I have never said the U.K. is the safest country in the world for women. I said it is comparatively safe compared to the places the migrants are coming from (Albania, Northern Africa and so on) and therefore the men will be coming from a country who do no view women as we do which presents a heightened risk than if they were coming from, say, New Zealand.

But yeah go ahead like I posted ‘U.K. is the best country in the world for women, AIBU’ 🙄

Well, we can all read other people’s opinions about the safety of other countries, and look at cherry picked data to back up whatever opinion we want to formulate.

I’ll only form opinions about the safety and the cultural attitude of the people’s of counties I’ve lived in. Which is why I know there are counties where in my experience I felt safer and more respected than I do in the UK, and in countries with far different cultures and value systems than here.

But then, if you haven’t experienced it yourself, why not just believe what your television and your chosen news outlet tells you. Britain good. Asia bad. Where are these people’s brains?

I too have lived in several other countries which is why I totally agree with you.
I have abroad when driving alone picked up male lone hitchhikers. I would never do this in the UK, it is not safe to do so.

So many people have never lived anywhere else and so rely on stereotypes and myths as this thread shows.

No you’re not the only posters who have lived in various countries. It’s strange to assume that

In which country did you pick up lone male hitch hikers?

ExistenceOptional · 13/02/2023 12:15

@Cuppasoupmonster Albania is a very safe country for women to travel alone. Safer than the UK.
It is a country with diversity of religion and ethnic groups and that affects men's attitudes.
It is also a country with different ideas of male/female intimate relationships with arranged and semi arranged marriages still fairly common. It reminds me of the catholicism I was brought up in. Mothers are to be worshipped and protected, wives are to do the bidding of their husbands who are the breadwinners and the head of the family.
But the UK has been terrible at keeping Albanian criminals out of the UK. Criminals do not tend to be nice people.

But I would guess this is 'the right kind of mob' in your view OP.

Harrassing and scaring teachers, donning illegal gear and demanding they resign as they are an easy target=good mob

Worried parents protesting as they wish to protect their children=bad mob

I don’t think I’d be that brave, but then in the counties I’ve been to men would never consider approaching a woman with a child, let alone getting into a car with one, even I had offered.

No, it really isn't.

Yes, it is. Activists insist words are 'violence' (aka 'literal violence'). So denying someone a livelihood is violence

@ElliF In Croatia before it got touristy and Montenegro. Both really safe. When I went back to Croatia just before covid with the increased tourism I was a bit more wary.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 13/02/2023 12:29

Cuppasoupmonster · 13/02/2023 11:46

But we’re not looking at it as a standalone question ‘is the U.K. wonderful for women?’

We’re looking at it as a comparison, how is it compared with the rest of the world? I’ve never said it is at the top, but it’s much better than most other countries in the world. Again, do you think Albania and Eritrea are less patriarchal and safer for women then the U.K.?

Of course it is. Have people on this thread travelled to these countries?

That’s not what OP said. Mob = Right Wing.
Like all those right wing extremists sitting in roads, climbing gantries, or the throwing paint over buildings.
Or those right wing mobs standing outside schools and hospitals demanding more money for the same work.
Or is it just that she chooses who is right wing based on whether or not she agrees with their cause. She has be asked but has chosen not to say.

Money corrupts and destroys communities. That’s life. People get greedy and want more and the don’t care what happens so long as they all get iPhones and cheap slippers. We are just a lot further down the path that the countries we choose to infect with our profligacy and our wealth.

Thanks for the link. No, I do not find that mob any more acceptable than the hotel mob. I've also seen the mob at the Tate which I find unacceptable as well.

Yes, she did say this.

She said she was worried the UK was becoming right wing as she saw a 'mob' in Liverpool. Hence that mob must be right wing and it worries her=bad mob. It couldn't be more clear if she tried

Most of the mob is right wing. The police have called protesters there from the far right. The police monitor these people and extreme far right groups. They will know who was there and have identified individuals and groups.

StressedToTheMaxxx · 13/02/2023 12:39

CockSpadget · 11/02/2023 21:00

There have been no left wing terror attacks in the U.K. The same can’t be said for the right.

No left wing terror attacks, no, but a lot of far left wing terrorising of people who hold opposing views to them.

It's always those who are at the extreme end of the scale that are the problem - far left and far right.

twelly · 13/02/2023 12:41

I don't think the country is becoming more right wing in fact I think in general it is moving more to a more woke/left agenda. I do not subscribe to either of these ideology.

I think the protests which turned very ugly in Liverpool were a response to people feeling powerless. Like with other issues people have been silenced if their view isn't considered politically correct and they are frustrated - therefore a lot of people feel frustrated that they can't express their views without fear of being called a racist (the same goes for people being labeled in other ways.) What we need is more balance with people being able to express their views - that way the arguments can be aired logically and in a rational and non aggressive way. The current situation means that people feel they can't voice opinions and that if anything fuels the anger.

Tourism helps communities thrive too. Countries sell themselves to attract people, including Croatia. If you had a choice would you not bother to attract tourists at all?

smileladiesplease · 13/02/2023 12:44

The far right Is exactly the same as the far left violent/thick/vicious and generally racist snd mysogynistic

However I don't think it was the Tory party conference had to hire security to protect a Jewish MP!

So I think you are wrong op.

ExistenceOptional · 13/02/2023 12:44

@MarshaBradyo Tourism is one way a poor country can become richer. So it brings benefits, but also downsides.
