Not really a particularly good point. Want to carry as little as possible?

Get an RFID card holder and pop your driving licence, Citizen Card or other PASS credit card sized ID in along with your bank card.

Job done!

Simple and neat.

Passport though...?

2bazookas · 30/04/2023 17:11

No, it doesn't mean you have no right to vote. You still have the right to vote by post, free.

Too late for that now.

Pretty sure 99% would forget their id so easily if they were to travel on holidays...

I don't forget it.

I just don't need it.

The UK didn't used to be a "Papers Please!" kind of society.

Get a postal vote, I wasn't asked for ID, votes already been sent

Anyone who hasn't applied for free Voter Authority Certificates by the end of deadline to vote in local council elections this year has chosen to disenfranchise themselves.

Local Elections commonly have low turnouts, so this wouldn't be a major issue.

The number of those requiring VACs will increase ahead of the next GE.

verdantverdure · 03/05/2023 19:11

2.6 million people could be disenfranchised under the new law.

At the risk of repeating myself.

We all had the vote.

The government took it away.

No. If you haven't got yourself a free id card, you took it away from yourself. If a person thinks their right to vote is important, they'd have made sure to get their id sorted.

Why didn’t the 2.6 million apply for the free id card as per instructions very clearly printed in your voting card

some people honestly expect there arse wiping for them nowadays

if there intelligent enough to follow the process to register then surely there intelligent enough to follow the instructions on the card

if they can’t vote because of lack of id and haven’t bothered to get free card it’s no one’s fault but there own

You've had your arse kicked every time you've posted on this topic and you come up with.....that?!

@MarshaMelrose is correct - anyone who needs free ID but hasn't applied for it has disenfranchised themselves.

And it is democratic for people to disenfranchise themselves in a democracy. 🤷‍♂️

Most people have photo Id of some sort passport, bus pass driving licence so i cant see it being that much of a problem

That says a lot about you and your level of privilege.

If you drop that or someone steals it you're going to have a hell of a job unpicking the identity fraud that ensues!

Why on earth would you carry such important documents on your person constantly?

verdantverdure · 04/05/2023 17:01

My friend is a prospective Labour councillor and she told me she tried to help a pensioner lady who was being turned away this morning, but she didn’t “want help from a Labourite”

93 year old with cancer who has been voting since 1950 unable to vote this time because she was ill during the window you could apply for Voter ID.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/woman-93-miss-casting-vote-29873757

Forgive my scepticism. She's not a postal voter so she always, had the intention to leave the house. She's got her picture taken outside in the paper. She has family round her. If it was that important to her they could have filled a form for her. Even now, her family are saying she's not going to get an ID card even though her dead granny held everyone should vote. They're hoping that she'll just do a postal vote without photo identification. They're in for a shock!
I guess it's just coincidental that a Labour supporting newspaper is picturing a Labour supporter.

Wait a minute. I'm not scrolling back but weren't people decrying on here when the Conservative party tried to help people register?
