From the FT: the government ignored advice that it was too soon and they hadn’t given people enough time to get suitable ID.

Women often don’t have utility bills in their name and people who have had to move a lot due to living in private rented accommodation or who had a chaotic childhood, or are homeless, or lived through a house fire or are estranged from parents or partner who withholds their papers, don’t necessarily have enough documentation.

The short timetable is a valid enough criticism. But, equally, turnouts aren't particularly great for local elections in the UK.

General Elections is the real biggie which isn't this year, so plenty of time for that.

However, the bit about young people in that isn't. See attachment.

“low income families, people in precarious housing, and young people will all face similar barriers. These are unfair rules designed to shore up an unfair system.”

People with disabilities are less likely to have recognisable photo ID according to the government’s own research.

Almost 10% of over 85s don’t have an accepted form of Voter ID, and are far less likely to have the internet or still be driving than younger age groups. (Many women over 85 never drove)

Anecdotally some older people don’t seem to think it affects them. “It’s for fraudsters not me. I’ve been voting all my life. Never miss it.” And “They know me at ours” are comments I have had related to me.

The first quote is from this piece

@downnative

I touched on that in the post above my last one.

it is a fact however that the peers voted to follow the government’s own report recommendation and broaden the list of acceptable ID, and the government overturned it.

Having photo ID isn’t the same as having Photo ID that will be accepted.

If a newly minted 18 year old thinks they are voting via a much younger photo of them in their passport they might get a shock.

Ditto for someone that’s been ill gone grey, lost or gained significant weight or just aged a lot in the last few years.

WhoDatDen · 15/04/2023 19:41

I've seen plenty of adverts about this and have my voting card, as do my mates. We discussed it last night in the pub.

Five of us have driving licences, three have passports so we are all ready. Seven of us voting conservative and one undecided.

No, you've merely ignored the fact that "young people are more likely than the general population to hold a form of photo ID".

99% of those aged 18-29 and 98% of those aged 30-69 as well as 98% of those aged 70+ hold a form of photo ID.

"Additionally, those aged 85+ were less likely to hold photo ID that was recognisable."

Not young people!

You've zeroed in on...passports for young people? Other forms of ID are more common AND cheaper for them, e.g. Citizen Card, Provisional or Full Driving Licence, etc.

If there's any young person who can't afford those for any reason, they can apply online for a FREE Voter Authority Certificate:

https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate

A poster on the previous page talked about how quick and easy it was getting their Voter Authority Certificate.

I'm afraid you're clutching at straws and treating young people in an infantilising way here too.

Apply for photo ID to vote (called a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’)

Apply for photo ID to vote (Voter Authority Certificate) in some elections and referendums in Great Britain if you do not have an accepted form of ID.

It’s very clear on the voting card they sent you
all the id listed and how to get free one if you haven’t got one

caffelattetogo · 21/04/2023 11:42

It's one thing having any ID, another thing finding it and then taking it to the polling station. I suspect many will be caught out on the day.

Really?!

You have to wonder then how anyone manages to take it with them in Northern Ireland and other countries!

Here in the UK, I take my driving licence with me everywhere. No need to remember then. Simple as that.

Not a big deal.

I don't drive so don't have a driving license, I'll have to remember to dig my passport out nearer the time and hope it's where I think it is 😁
I'm assuming that's the type of thing the other poster was meaning

We panic every morning and search the whole house instead of breakfast😔 it's hard life.

Lol. We just don't whine about it and just keep docs in one place like any reasonably mature adult

Get a citizen card and take that everywhere with you in your purse or what have you. No need to hunt for it then.

And go vote with it! 😀

Presumably they want various forms of proof of ID in order to set up a postal vote for you?

ladygindiva · 25/04/2023 18:17

I've applied for an ID card, cost £15 , was very easy and quick and should be here within 21 days. Just Google ID card UK

I'll have to look into that, but as far I know it shouldn't cost money to get appropriate ID to vote.

No, @ladygindiva applied for a Citizen Card which costs £15 for a standard application. They did NOT apply for the Voter Authority Certificate at all.

It is the Voter Authority Certificate that's free and you can only apply on the UK Government Website.

It doesn't. Who is interested in voting should have it done now

verdantverdure · 25/04/2023 18:37

It's like the emergency alert.

People are at the mercy of government communications.

Maybe some people knew that phones on the 3 network probably wouldn't get the alert.

Or that if you took your phone off aeroplane mode before 3.30 you'd still get it.

But that news didn't reach me.

It's the same with this.

And it'll be too late when people have to vote today and don't have the accepted ID.

Bubblebubblebah · 25/04/2023 18:39

*It's the same with this.

It was on polling cards as well. If only people spent the same energy they spent whining about this on something productive like actually having SOME timy interest in what's happening around them....

It's the people who aren't worried about it who will come unstuck.

Either because they don't read their polling cards when they arrive. Or have been away, or for some other reason don't know.

Plus people who think they'll be fine.

And they won't.

Bubblebubblebah · 25/04/2023 18:50

I am at the stage when I think that's quite frankly the person's problem and one cannot whine when they were uninterested in general happenings around them. It was also on all leaflets.
