BUT VOTER FRAUD!

By the end of this year, postal voters will have to produce the same types of id to register as well.

It's the people who aren't worried about it who will come unstuck.

Either because they don't read their polling cards when they arrive. Or have been away, or for some other reason don't know.

Plus people who think they'll be fine.

And they won't.

Well, that's their problem. They should have read the instructions. It's very clear on the polling card.

MarshaMelrose · 25/04/2023 19:16

And it'll be too late when people have to vote today and don't have the accepted ID.

The elections are today?

Today at 5pm was the deadline to apply for free photo ID.

Sorry.

I conflated two thoughts there.

It's too late to apply for ID now.

But will also be too late when people find out on voting day that they need ID, or that their ID is unacceptable.

The government says that an expired passport is ok because otherwise they would be disenfranchising 5 -7 million voters instead of two million.

But it's the bod on the day who decides if your photo is "recognisable"
It's been a rough decade or so.

Lots of us don't look much like our in date passports any more.

Let alone that one from decades ago.

You're still banging the tired drum of "some of us don't look like our photo ID!"?

That's been dealt with. Read carefully what the attachment says about that - you've seen it before.

That's OK. @verdantverdure . I just thought I'd got the dates wrong. I've had a very ill family member and I've been in and out of hospital with her for the past couple of weeks or so, so I've lost track of time!

Oh god. Yeah, that'll do it to you. I hope they're on the mend now or will be soon. xx

MarshaMelrose · 26/04/2023 01:26

Aw, thank you. I appreciate that. Fingers crossed. 🙂

SweetSakura · 26/04/2023 20:32

Yanbu. I work closely with our elections team, I still reckon I will forget to bring any ID and have to go home for it Grin

Good point. I don't routinely carry mine with me. (I carry as littke as possible)

DownNative · 30/04/2023 13:22

Not really a particularly good point. Want to carry as little as possible?

Get an RFID card holder and pop your driving licence, Citizen Card or other PASS credit card sized ID in along with your bank card.

Job done!

Simple and neat.

Bubblebubblebah · 30/04/2023 13:25

Pretty sure 99% would forget their id so easily if they were to travel on holidays...

Bubblebubblebah · 30/04/2023 13:25

Would NOT

I think that's a bit different.

When I worked in polling stations a lot of people were nipping in on their way too /from the school run, or when walking the dog or similar, or had pretty much shuffled round the corner in an ad break or similar, so it's totally understandable they wouldn't have ID on them .

I am going to have to fit in voting on a day that involves - school runs X2, work, school runs X2., Sorting dinner, clubs for kids X3 and then heading out to work at the count..... I will hopefully remember my ID but will have about 8 million other things I am also trying to remember to do <grits teeth>

I am sure we will get used to it but it will be an adjustment for a while, like any new system

Bubblebubblebah · 30/04/2023 13:39

There are always 8 million other things even when leaving on holidays. 🤷🏻
Just put id in a bad or pocket the night before.
It's baiscal adult function. Prople know they need it, just prepare it. The excuses are really sometimes just unbelievable

SweetSakura · 30/04/2023 13:41

I'm not making excuses Hmm just pointing out the distinction between something ingrained and habitual (ID for holidays) and something novel that people will need to get used to. That's just human nature.

Excuses.

Just pop valid ID in a RFID card holder with your bank cards and you don't have to then remember to take ID with you.

Very simple! Not 🚀 science....

I have an id in my wallet. In all reality it is vastly unlikely that I, personally, will forget given that I will be supporting the election team with legal queries all day. But I will absolutely empathise with people who do forget.

It's insane to pretend that there won't be a period of adjustment as people get used to a new habit. That's just human nature.

You're contradicting yourself.

Is it?

"I still reckon I will forget to bring any ID and have to go home for it."

Or is it?

"In all reality it is vastly unlikely that I, personally, will forget given that I will be supporting the election team with legal queries all day."

Especially as you now say "I have an id in my wallet", so your much earlier statement makes no sense as you won't need to remember to bring your ID given you’ve got it ready in your wallet. 🙃

In any case, have it ready so there's no problem. This isn't 🚀 science and excuses about forgetting are just that...excuses. 🤷‍♂️

No, you are determinedly missing the point.

SweetSakura · 30/04/2023 15:11

(and I don't tend to take my wallet out for things like school runs etc)

Not only are you missing the point, but you continue to make excuses. 🤦‍♂️

I take my RFID card holder everywhere which has my driving licence in along with bank cards, work card, etc.

SweetSakura · 30/04/2023 16:37

If you say so.

I'm glad I can be more compassionate about people.
