Most people have photo Id of some sort passport, bus pass driving licence so i cant see it being that much of a problem

pleat · 11/02/2023 15:21

It's been like this in Northern Ireland since the mid-80s.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 11/02/2023 15:26

Thank you for the reminder. I keep forgetting to apply for mine. I just need a semi decent photo!

Estimates are that around 3 million people don't and they are likely to be from lower socio-economic groups.

I suspect many aren't even aware of that change. I've seen two billboards advertising this fact in a city of several hundred thousand people.

Yay, systemic voter suppression again. The right-wing's favourite activity apart from coining it on public contracts and running away.

Does it actually mean anything though? I have several photo ID things, but I've never needed to use them to do anything to do with voting.

Womanofcustard · 11/02/2023 16:05

The voter fraud they’re trying to stop is mainly in the postal votes.

KangarooKenny · 11/02/2023 16:06

I have a postal vote so I don’t need ID. Easy.

Rocketpants50 · 11/02/2023 16:09

This is good news, I went to vote once and someone had already voted for me. Nothing they could do.

My friend is a police officer who attends polling stations. He said they can open the box and remove the vote. Thats why they write a number on your voting paper. We are in Scotland though and it was a big thing during the referendum.

Well, we all know that stopping voter fraud is not what they are really trying to do.

Lol no.

have a little think. I wonder which groups of people might be less likely to have photo id? HMMMMMMM

Er - no they can't. The duplicate vote won't be put in the box. The first vote will not be removed. A court order is required to search through votes, and that won't happen until well after the final count.

KangarooKenny · 11/02/2023 16:48

I’ve had a letter from the council informing me of the changes.

There are people who are entitled to vote who don’t speak English. Needing photo ID to vote is a way to disenfranchise vulnerable people

I would imagine that that the problem with disenfranchisement is already there then.

Which as far as I can gather carry on unchanged.

No problem with that plan at all Hmm

mellongoose · 11/02/2023 16:55

If it's worked perfectly well in NI for decades, what's the problem 🤷‍♀️

Anyone can apply for a postal vote. Stop scare mongering.

People who are here and don't speak English have photo IDs. We have to prove our right to work, rent etc and that was always our travel docs.
I don't know, unless extremes like homeless or drug addict, a single immigrant with no photo ID.

theconversation.com/six-reasons-britains-impending-voter-id-law-is-a-bad-idea-196436

More worryingly, voter identification requirements lead to eligible citizens not casting their vote. It is difficult to calculate how many, but the voter ID pilots show that most poll workers encountered people who could not vote as they did not have ID. When photographic identification requirements were first introduced in Northern Ireland, it was estimated that 2.3% of the electorate were refused a vote for not presenting the required identification.

The government’s own research found that 4% of Great Britain’s population did not have photographic identification in which they were recognisable. That would mean that approximately 1.9 million people who are currently eligible to vote being excluded from elections.

He was answering my question why they write a number on your ballot if it’s anonymous. He wasn’t being sarcastic. As I said that’s what I was told and we are in Scotland if it makes any difference.
