at a family party
allowed 2 drinks with water in between whilst adult is monitoring

yanbu - that’s not on abs will lead to alcohol issues and associated dangers

yabu - it’s legal and allows kids to learn about drinking sensibly

But that isn't what's been done here. Some adult thought it appropriate to buy a few 11yr olds a bottle of apple spurs for goodness sake
It's not a limoncello pallette cleanser lolny parents lived in France and we made limoncello. We drove to Italy to get the alcohol cheaper! It was absolutely lovely and I know where you're coming from but your romanticised version here is not the same as a bottle of sourz to shoot.

In fairness the OP asked if it was unreasonable for a 11/12yr old to be given two drinks with water during an evening celebration. My answer is no, not unreasonable. I then always seem to be unable to resist the need to emphasise that there is more than one way to skin a car, as it were. But I take your point that actually as a lone event in a background of low to zero alcohol there is a good way to do it and a bad way. I still don't think a couple of watered down drinks is terrible at that age, though.

It’s really bad for you too. Limoncello is flipping strong. You give that to kids?

Early teens onwards probably, though most turn their nose up on it until they're older because they don't like the taste. They wouldn't be refused it if they wanted a glass. Anyone younger would be allowed a taste from a parent's glass.
It's only a very small glass anyway, a shot to be sipped.

It's a no from me until mine are 18. There is just no need.

Good luck with that.

I’d say half a glass with a special occasion dinner at 11 or 12 is fine. 2 too many.

I let my 13 year old have Prosecco for the first time at new year - she asked to try it and I didn’t want to make it a forbidden temptation
She hated it!!
i think it’s ok to let them try it from that age but no earlier, in moderation and on the right occasions

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 11/02/2023 22:52

I wouldn't - far too young imo.
I do let my 11 year old (12 next month) try my drinks. I.e. a tiny sip.
16+ for me (I think but not there yet) even though I was only 13/14...

Kids that young don't need alcohol

That sounds the sort of level you would use with a 14/15yo.

This!! Really don't know why someone would consider giving any 'child' alcohol....

I knew someone who wasn't allowed to drink till 18. When he did drink at 18 he didn't know his limit and ended up smashing his head open ended up in hospital. My son will be allowed it before 18 for that reason.

11/12 is way too young. As is 13/14/15 in my book.

I have a 15 year old and a 16.5 year old. If they have drunk alcohol it’s in very small amounts because we always collect them from wherever they are and they’ve never been noticeably drunk. They won’t be provided alcohol by us until they’re 18 or close to it.

In Australia there is a public health campaign to stop parents from normalising teenage drinking, because kids who are given alcohol by their parents actually drink more as teenagers than kids whose parents don’t allow it. They also experience more alcohol-related harm. See this Study. You’ll also notice that the age group being studied here is 16-17, because that’s what is considered under age drinking, not bloody 12!

Other studies have also shown that close to 40% of 12-17yo in Australia have never tried alcohol. So perhaps it isn’t guaranteed that all teens will drink?

educateyourselfpeople · 12/02/2023 01:15

No way. Not until 18.

Karen398 · 12/02/2023 01:19

I'd say too young , maybe at 14/15
