To think that 'gender affirming care" is barbaric and should be banned?

This article is from the US but these procedures have been carried out in the UK. Teenagers who are confused and vulnerable do not have the mental capacity to consent to puberty blockers, cross sex hormones or life altering surgery.

Please read this devastating article from a whistleblower who has been working in a gender clinic in the US.

I completely accept that there should be a route available to discuss trans-gender issues and the appropriate way forward for the individual. BUT it's a very complicated area. I personally know of two teenagers who started the trans journey at around 14/15, were taking medication to stop periods and were generally being "boys" but changed their minds when they got to 17/18 and had to completely "start again" which was not easy for them.

Newmownhaw · 10/02/2023 21:24

There's another thread on this already.

VestaTilley · 10/02/2023 21:26

YANBU. In 25 years time there’ll be the mother of all public scandals because thousands of gay, lesbian and autistic teens were sterilised and castrated.

And politicians will look all shocked and pretend they don’t know why. This is why. Feminists warned them, and they didn’t listen. I’m looking at you, Labour Party.

Not in AIBU though. More traffic here.

It's insane that some people believe children are capable of weighing the pros and cons to make these kinds of life-altering decisions. The people who profit from this or are otherwise motivated to push the agenda hide the devastating side effects, minimise the ways it can all go wrong, and ignore the stories of those who have been through it and bitterly regretted it. They'll likely never be brought to account for their role in destroying so many lives. It's sickening.

One doctor at the Center, Dr. Chris Lewis, is giving patients a drug called Bicalutamide. The drug has a legitimate use for treating pancreatic cancer, but it has a side effect of causing breasts to grow, and it can poison the liver. There are no clinical studies for using this drug for gender transitions, and there are no established standards of care for using this drug.”
“I know of at least one patient at the Center who was advised by the renal department to stop taking Bicalutamide because the child was experiencing liver damage. The child’s parent reported this to the Center through the patient’s online self-reporting medical chart (MyChart). The parent said they were not the type to sue, but ‘this could be a huge PR problem for you.’”
“Children come into the clinic using pronouns of inanimate objects like ‘mushroom,’ ‘rock,’ or ‘helicopter.’ Children come into the clinic saying they want hormones because they do not want to be gay. Children come in changing their identities on a day-to-day basis. Children come in under clear pressure by a parent to identify in a way inconsistent with the child’s actual identity. In all these cases, the doctors decide to issue puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones.”
“In one case where a girl was placed on cross-sex hormones, I found out later that the girl desired cross-sex hormones only because she wanted to avoid becoming pregnant. There was no need for this girl to be prescribed cross-sex hormones. What she needed was basic sex education and maybe contraception. An adequate assessment before prescribing hormones would have revealed this fact. But because the doctors automatically prescribe cross-sex hormones or puberty blockers for children meeting the bare minimum criteria, this girl was unnecessarily placed on drugs that cause irreversible change to the body.”
“On another occasion, a patient had their breasts removed. This surgery was performed at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Three months later, the patient contacted the surgeon and asked for their breasts to be ‘put back on.’ Had a requisite and adequate assessment been performed before the procedure, the doctors could have prevented this patient from undergoing irreversible surgical change.”

I do not understand how we got to this place.

There appears to be no safeguarding, no ethics, no risk assessment, no evidence based guidelines and no record keeping going on.

How is this possible in 2023? What led to this?

TheKeatingFive · 10/02/2023 22:13

That article is heart breaking btw

Appalonia · 10/02/2023 23:44

Women have been shouting into the void about this for YEARS as have other whistleblowers. That this is coming from the US is HUGE tho, as there are hundreds of these gender clinics there now. I can only hope that the bravery of this person speaking out about it will raise much needed awareness about these unethical practices.

Every parent needs to understand this stuff and to ensure that their child's school is not unthinkingly pushing a trans agenda.

Previous posters are right - this is a scandal of epic proportions with terrible damage happening to children / teenagers. How have we ended up here?

WiIson · 11/02/2023 00:03

I don't think children should be making these decisions, and I don't think adults have the right to make it for them.

I think adults who have capacity, know all the facts, and can weigh it up, and are given proper support to make a decision, can do so.

medianewbie · 11/02/2023 00:16

.

tobee · 11/02/2023 01:56

So many people are turning a blind eye or pushing this. So many! Not just a few dodgy doctors or some small group on the extremes of the internet. It's pushed on a massive scale, especially for a particular age demographic, with the involvement of many, many governments, healthcare, education, academic institutions around the world. Unbelievable. Kept under wraps for so long. With young people being demonised by friends for questioning it. Work places threatening to fire people for criticising it. And places STILL signing up for it.

Our government are not doing enough to protect us from it. Our opposition are not doing enough to protect us from it.

Flaunch · 11/02/2023 02:00

It’s nothing short of child abuse imo. I don’t think it’ll just be the NHS getting sued either, I imagine there will be child/ parent prosecutions too.

Ohdofuckofdear · 11/02/2023 03:00

What an amazingly brave women she is to stand up and speak up for the children who's life's are being ruined.

I hope to God the right people start listening and paying attention to what's being done to so many very very young children before more children are mutilated and left to fend for themselves for years to come.

Sugarfree23 · 11/02/2023 09:40

Op YANBU. We will look back with a WTF face.

I'm convinced is very similar to the Anorexia eating disorders of the 90s. We have a big push on Body Positivity why isn't sex / gender pushing the same thing? Be Positive about your body male or female.

jeaux90 · 11/02/2023 09:47

YANBU OP. It's a decision for adults to make and when I say adults I mean over 25. And even then some of the de transitioning stories are from adults who did this in their 30s etc

I'd go further and say no adult should transition without a shed load of counselling that explores all aspects.

I try and maintain a mental separation between this insidious ideology and those who suffer from awful dysphoria.

m.independent.ie/irish-news/health/irish-gender-affirmation-surgeon-based-in-florida-is-reported-over-false-promotion-in-tiktoks-42051361.html

This is a doctor I came across having seen her name mentioned on threads here.
Worryingly blasé attitude to the harm she is doing.

TheKeatingFive · 11/02/2023 09:52

I mean, we have stringent laws against tobacco advertising, yet this grifter is advertising her 'yeet the teet' procedures to vulnerable teens all over Twitter.

Where the actual fuck are the responsible grown ups here?

Ridelikethewindypops · 11/02/2023 09:52

And another

TheKeatingFive · 11/02/2023 09:53

Yeet the Teet is Dr Gallagher speak for cutting off the healthy breasts of confused teens, btw

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 11/02/2023 09:56

"I want my breasts back" has just broken my heart.

I know of young people with serious complex needs and experience of trauma who are now travelling to places like Turkey to get the euphemistic 'top surgery ', it's devastating.

VickyEadieofThigh · 11/02/2023 10:07

That the word "care" is used in this context makes my blood boil. There's no "care" involved - children and young people are being unthinkingly "affirmed" about life-changing issues when we don't allow them to get tattoos because 'they might change their minds'.

Ridelikethewindypops · 11/02/2023 10:15

Your post reminded me of this @TheKeatingFive

To think that 'gender affirming care" is barbaric and should be banned?
RichardBarrister · 11/02/2023 10:17

I know a teenager that had a double mastectomy. Crowd funded by well heeled friends of the family. No previous indications of a trans identity.

No psychological assessment or therapy because it was private procedure and that is not a requirement- they just take your money and book you in.

People put more time and thought into choosing a puppy.

Most kids can quietly put their teenage mistakes aside and move on with their lives. If this is a mistake for her it can only be a very public process to admit.

Facilitated by adults, all of whom should have told her to wait a few years and see how she felt when her brain had matured fully.
