Frozen sandwiches

When I was at school my mother used to prepare our sandwiches eg at the start of term, and freeze them.

We would then take a sandwich each day, and as to how defrosted it was by lunch really varied by the time of the year.

In winter, still a bit solid.

In the height of summer, just..: very wet.

We had a good laugh about this at the weekend - but my mother says we are being v unreasonable and she sees no issue with it.

I think I’d rather probably get a a letter from school if I did this. They were terrible.

Who is unreasonable here - her for making us eat these abominations for years, or us for taking the piss.

She is! That sounds horrible 🤮

CastlesByTheSea · 09/02/2023 21:07

Haha I like the idea! Would save time - not sure how it would work though as you’ve said

QueenAstrid · 09/02/2023 21:07

OP my Mum did this too! The sandwiches were the same every day, ham on a brown roll. I can’t imagine doing that to my DC, and they wouldn’t put up with it either.

MysweetAudrina · 09/02/2023 21:07

I think it would put me off sandwiches for life.

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/02/2023 21:09

I know several.people who do this for children's and their own packed lunches. They are fine.

NameOchangeO1 · 09/02/2023 21:10

We used to do that! Are you my sister?

Actually, our mum had us make and freeze the sandwiches ourselves. They started our pretty bad (one slice of ham or turkey, no butter or mayo, no salad, white squishy bread) and were not improved by being frozen and defrosted.

They weren't lovely but no one died and with hindsight they were probably what we could afford.

Child cruelty

anybloodyname · 09/02/2023 21:12

I used to work with a Dr who did this

He'd come in with a frozen sandwich, we all thought it was weird
He used to do some batch cooking and lunch preparing on a Sunday for the whole week

Didn't look soggy but I did wonder 🤨

PumpkinPie2016 · 09/02/2023 21:13

Your mum is being unreasonable 😂 sounds awful 😂 I sort of get why she did it, in terms of saving time, but I can't imagine the sandwiches were nice at all.

I must say, it does baffle me a bit when I see this suggested. I take a packed lunch for work, which often includes a sandwich. It takes a couple of mins in the morning to make fresh, so why would you make a batch and freeze 🤷‍♀️

BigFatLiar · 09/02/2023 21:14

I know you're supposed to be able to freeze bread but I've always thought that it wasn't the same after it defrosted. I don't think frozen sandwiches sound appealing.

considerablycuntierthanyou · 09/02/2023 21:15

I used to do this for my lot, but they threatened revolt so I made them do it themselves.

considerablycuntierthanyou · 09/02/2023 21:15

*make their own sandwiches, not freeze them

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 09/02/2023 21:15

Yep mum did this - from the age of 5 - 16 it was a cheese sandwich on white bread everyday. Never at another cheese sandwich for 40 years until last week!

MissingNightshades · 09/02/2023 21:17

Freezing stuff is always a good tip for the height of the summer if you don't have access to a fridge at work, but I can see chomping into frozen sarnies in the winter would be nasty.

StopGo · 09/02/2023 21:20

My parents made me make a mountain of cheap white bread ham sandwiches and then an equal mountain of white bread honey sandwiches.

Five years of hell

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/02/2023 21:20

I know people who do this on a Sunday night so weekly

Not termly

Some fillings are good. Others aren't

Florxa · 09/02/2023 21:21

I freeze my sandwiches, I do a whole batch and just take them out in the morning to defrost, always fine!

thatstaplerismine · 09/02/2023 21:22

I remember chomping through frozen fish paste sandwiches- I must have been an obliging child.

Surroundedbyfools · 09/02/2023 21:22

Her !!!

sounds bloody horrible. I would defo just have binned them as a kid. I can’t understand why anyone would freeze sandwich’s !

Craftybodger · 09/02/2023 21:22

I used to do this for work, make up batches at the weekend. You have to choose the bread and the filling carefully. No salad as it doesn’t survive freezing etc. Soft white bread rolls, with tuna mayo for instance, works, then you add a chunk of cucumber on the side for crunch etc!

Futurethoughts · 09/02/2023 21:23

Frozen bread is absolutely disgusting. My dad used to freeze it and I hated it. We often don’t get through a full loaf but it’s just duck food when it’s gone a bit stale: I will not freeze bread!

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 09/02/2023 21:23

My mum used to do this too. Tuna on wholemeal. They were horrible, really soggy!

12345mummy · 09/02/2023 21:24

When we were kids my friends mum went away with work for a month. She left a freezer full of sandwiches for her husband’s work lunch which he took out the night before. I still have a little chuckle about this now. YANBU for seeing the funny side.

iwantmyownicecreamvan · 09/02/2023 21:27

We used to do this for some days - say 2 or 3 - where as pp say you had to have cheese or ham or tuna mayo with any salad separately. On the other days we did try to make them - my ex used to take them too and didn't complain. They aren't as nice as fresh but when you're pushed ...

I freeze bread all the time - honestly I think it tastes fine. My now adult kids do it too.
