Frozen sandwiches

BingBoings · 09/02/2023 21:03

When I was at school my mother used to prepare our sandwiches eg at the start of term, and freeze them.

We would then take a sandwich each day, and as to how defrosted it was by lunch really varied by the time of the year.

In winter, still a bit solid.

In the height of summer, just..: very wet.

We had a good laugh about this at the weekend - but my mother says we are being v unreasonable and she sees no issue with it.

I think I’d rather probably get a a letter from school if I did this. They were terrible.

Who is unreasonable here - her for making us eat these abominations for years, or us for taking the piss.

It sounds completely rank, I don't think I'd have eaten another sandwich again through choice.
My mother did pander to our sandwich whims, I remember her boiling eggs for egg and cress sandwiches while we had breakfast.

GlassBunion · 09/02/2023 21:55

It's funny that I've seen a couple of threads , recently, where posters are still championing this as a great idea.

The main problem with this idea is that these sandwiches are then placed in an insulated bag which means that the sandwiches don't defrost properly and lose their condensation so you end up with semi frozen/wet sandwiches.

It only works with a non insulated container and a late lunchtime.

Martyr Mums R Us

declutteringmymind · 09/02/2023 21:58

I think it's a generational thing. My mum looks at my parenting and thinks I mollycoddle my children - I boil stuffed oasta, or rice for flasks in the morning for the kids' flask.

The amount of times I've heard 'it never did you any harm' from my mother. One day I'm going to lose my shit and tell her how grim it all was. My parents didn't freeze my sandwiches - I just got cold leftovers or had to make something myself, or go without at high school. We were poor though so she's forgiven.

Having said that some people freeze sandwiches and are happy with it. Whatever works for them, and it's definitely less wasteful and costly than making them fresh.

WordtoYoMumma · 09/02/2023 21:58

I do this every work day. On a Sunday I make 5 sandwich rolls and freeze them. Then each day I grab one and take it in my lunch box, by lunchtime it's defrosted. Been doing this on and off for years and never had an issue.

DH does the kids lunches and prefers to do them fresh each day so they don't have frozen sandwiches but if I did lunches I'd totally do that for them.

There is currently a sandwich in my freezer from 2 days ago when DS forgot to take it. I'll probably have it at the weekend

RemoteControlDoobry · 09/02/2023 21:59

My mum did this and it was fine…surely it’s a good thing in summer?

I often get frozen bread out and spread butter on it for DS’s lunch. I buy a big sourdough loaf, slice it and freeze it….then just get out slices as needed and it’s more fresh than leaving it out. Plus there’s no wastage. Didn’t occur to me that this is outrageous behaviour😆

TheKeatingFive · 09/02/2023 22:01

My mum did this. I did it myself for work in my 20s.

With the right bread and fillings it's fine.

FallonofDynasty · 09/02/2023 22:02

I get out frozen bread slices, spread philly or peanut butter and take them in to work. Nay problem.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 09/02/2023 22:07

My Mother did this - hence I always have to make sandwiches either in the morning or take the ingredients and make it at the time. I hated those frozen sandwiches - ham/corned beef/or cheese .Vomit inducing.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 09/02/2023 22:07

Agreeing with the people who say it doesn't seem like much of a time saving. I make DDs lunch box while the kettles boiling for my coffee in the morning. It's such a quick job it's not worth trying to make it quicker, especially if the end result is a soggy or partly frozen sandwich.

TheKeatingFive · 09/02/2023 22:11

Agreeing with the people who say it doesn't seem like much of a time saving

For me it's more psychological. I really hate having that extra task in the morning.

Florxa · 09/02/2023 21:21

I freeze my sandwiches, I do a whole batch and just take them out in the morning to defrost, always fine!

What do you put in them and on them, @Florxa ?

MrsCarson · 09/02/2023 22:16

My oldest Ds used to do something similar, no idea where he got the idea. He'd make his sandwich the night before and freeze it. It would be defrosted by lunchtime and he'd eat it. he always was a bit odd

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/02/2023 22:18

Sounds bloody horrible.

SirenSays · 09/02/2023 22:21

I don't see how you could freeze nice sandwiches with meat, salad, cheese, dressings.. If you're just wacking a bit of ham on some white bread then surely it takes practically zero time to make on the day or night before.

Crostimosti · 09/02/2023 22:23

My mum used to get up early and make 4 sets of lunches for my siblings and I and our dad. She didn't like to to do them the night before as they wouldn't be as fresh! All with different fillings depending in our tastes too. And freshly cut, door step bread. I still love all this to this day for lunch!

I don't think I'd have liked partially defrosted or soggy sandwiches.

picklemewalnuts · 09/02/2023 22:26

I did it for mine. They could choose what they wanted. As long as you are careful what you choose it works well. Keeps things cool and fresh.

So
grated cheese and mayo/salad cream is good.

PBJ

Meat of any kind, with mustard mayo/butter.

Do not use cucumber, salad, tomato... that way lies soggy bread!

Kids built their own pack up by grabbing combinations of frubes, sandwiches, drinks from the freezer, snacks from the tub.

Florxa · 09/02/2023 22:28

CantFindTheBeat · 09/02/2023 22:14

What do you put in them and on them, @Florxa ?

Hummus and cheese
Ham/turkey/chicken and cheese. Pb+j
Do various fillings combos with cream cheese, avacado, sliced meats etc
I tend to go with whatever is on yellow sticker that will work, great money saver for me, there's always lots of hummus, sandwich meat in my local tesco yellow sticker section, I grab them and freeze them into sandwiches, never had soggy or still frozen ones.

Eyerollcentral · 09/02/2023 22:29

I keep coming back to this thread because I can’t get my head round it. You can make five rounds of sandwiches in literally two minutes 🤯 maybe I spent too much of my youth working in cafes.

Wineat5isfine · 09/02/2023 22:30

I personally wouldn’t do this and am happy to make fresh sandwiches when my DC don’t have hot lunches at school.

Frozen / part defrosted sandwiches sound pretty disgusting. I don’t see the point really when it takes 2 mins to make a fresh one!

Oopswediditagain2023 · 09/02/2023 22:30

My cousin used to take frozen sandwiches to school and she LOVED them 😂 I was always repulsed but she sometimes makes them herself now 🤣🤣

hiyaKen · 09/02/2023 22:31

I freeze all my bread

A slice will defrost in ten mins . It's a fresh as the day i bought it

*make sure it's wrapped whilst defrosting so it doesn't dry

EmmiJay · 09/02/2023 22:34

My daughter would report me to every teacher in her school if I gave her a soggy sandwich. 😅 It takes 2 mins to make a sandwich. I'm not freezing them!

Mrsbunnychops · 09/02/2023 22:34

My mum did it too!! She froze everything back then and they were rank 😂

Galadriel90 · 09/02/2023 22:38

Absolutely gross. Making a sandwich is basic and takes moments.
