Frozen sandwiches

BingBoings · 09/02/2023 21:03

When I was at school my mother used to prepare our sandwiches eg at the start of term, and freeze them.

We would then take a sandwich each day, and as to how defrosted it was by lunch really varied by the time of the year.

In winter, still a bit solid.

In the height of summer, just..: very wet.

We had a good laugh about this at the weekend - but my mother says we are being v unreasonable and she sees no issue with it.

I think I’d rather probably get a a letter from school if I did this. They were terrible.

Who is unreasonable here - her for making us eat these abominations for years, or us for taking the piss.

Not frozen, but mine used to pack them in a bread bag, so I had to reach my whole arm in to retrieve them. Every fucking day.

Made from defrosted white bread which had a weird aroma from the freezing and thawing. My school mate once reliably informed me that my sandwich 'stank of cat piss', I had to agree even though I wasn't sure what that smelt like.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/02/2023 22:53

I think it does depend on the filing

Tuna or wet stuff makes bread so damp and soggy

Ham or cheese prob ok

CampervanKween · 09/02/2023 22:56

My mum used to do this after parties when there were left over sandwiches. Terrible. They never defrosted in time.

WetLettuce2 · 09/02/2023 23:05

Given the current prices of sandwiches, I think this is a splendid idea.

You clearly didn’t die.

Teaandtoast3 · 09/02/2023 23:14

I hate frozen bread 🤮

BogRollBOGOF · 09/02/2023 23:23

I used to do this when doing casual supply work. Phone rings, grab sandwich, grab cereal bars, crisps, fruit, bottle of water, out in 5 minutes.

Salad was out, but ham and cheese, cream cheese and salmon, and pesto and mozzerella worked well.
Plus no discovering that the packaging on ham or cheese had curled making it dry out after opening.

RosyappleA · 09/02/2023 23:25

There is never enough time not to make a fresh sandwich. Sounds awful and lazy parenting to me. Unless you had 10 siblings or were very poor so couldn’t buy fresh bread etc then perhaps I would kind of understand but if you can’t look after kids properly then don’t have them. It isn’t fair on the children.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 09/02/2023 23:29

My Mum did this, but just a week at a time. I had no problem with it. I always liked my sandwiches and don't recall them ever being soggy. She must have had some trick to it because when I tried it when my DC1 first started school they were horrid!

If I'm doing a sandwich packed lunch now I make them up the night before. But my DC are not sandwich fans really...or not in a packed lunch anyway. One won't eat them if they get a bit squashed; one only wants cheese in his sandwich but only if the cheese is still cold which it's not by lunchtime! They're definitely more fussy than I was at their age!

airfryerandelectricblanket · 09/02/2023 23:31

People still do this.

You just have to find the right fillings that work well being frozen and defrosted.

Depending on what time of year it is, you either take them out of the freezer that morning (summer) or the night before and put them in the fridge until you leave for school in the winter.

They are seriously ok and it saves lots of time!

squidgybits · 09/02/2023 23:35

I do seem to waste a lot of bread, had thought about freezing it, but only for toasting

Sheldon Cooper : Thank you. I'd like to make a sandwich, but I'm out of bread.
Penny : There's some in the fridge.
Sheldon Cooper : You shouldn't keep your bread in the refrigerator. Staleness is caused by crystallization of the starch molecules, which occurs faster at cool temperatures

🤔

NortieTortie · 10/02/2023 00:20

@RosyappleA Don't have kids if you can't make them fresh sandwiches? 😂😂 Christ, I've heard it all now.

I imagine it takes the same amount of effort to make 5 sandwiches on a Sunday than it does to make one fresh each weekday. Hardly slobby parenting. Some right weirdos on here.

Eyerollcentral · 10/02/2023 00:34

Thing is there is just absolutely no way that a frozen sandwich is as nice as a freshly made one. It might be fine, but could not be as nice. The taste deficit is defo not worth the minimal time saved, if there is any.

MrsMikeDrop · 10/02/2023 00:42

Your mum sounds like a bloody genius! Don't think I'd have the heart to subject my child to the same though 😆

Agreeing with the people who say it doesn't seem like much of a time saving

For me it's more psychological. I really hate having that extra task in the morning.

Same, I do mine at night for work the next day
It feels easier somehow

mackthepony · 10/02/2023 01:50

Does sound rank to be fair.

Along with the ubiquitous custard creams I bet

And a flask of warm orange squash

BitchyHen · 10/02/2023 02:12

Oh my gosh, I think I blocked this out of my memory. I had to eat frozen sandwiches too. They were horrible, kind of sticky, and sometimes had freezer burn too. I usually ate mine as I was always starving by lunchtime but my brother got into trouble as he got caught posting his behind the radiator in the class cloakroom. When they looked behind the radiator thre were loads of dry sandwiches- he must have been doing it for weeks.

Shesasuperfreak · 10/02/2023 02:26

Ew

Canuckduck · 10/02/2023 02:45

Haha we had frozen sandwiches too! I don’t remember them being wet but they were bland. I think mostly ham in whole meal or peanut butter and jam. Plus a juice box, apple, granola bar. Everyday.

Dancingtumbleweed · 10/02/2023 04:49

Ignore that the cats climbing on me and I posted too soon.

Redebs · 10/02/2023 05:04

Problem is, you can't freeze salad ingredients, so end up missing out on the healthier stuff.

Fluffy24 · 10/02/2023 05:11

The overreaction on this thread is hilarious. I used to make myself frozen rolls in batches and take one to school each day. Ham was expensive and that way the whole pack could be used for sandwiches and remain fresh, rather than it sitting in the fridge all week (it was too expensive to use for general consumption). It was never still frozen at lunchtime and I don't remember them being soggy.

mickandrorty · 10/02/2023 05:27

I started doing this when towards the end of the week there was loads of bread and fillings leftover and they would go in the bin otherwise, my husband who was extremely sceptical didn't even notice!

Wildernesstips · 10/02/2023 06:54

I do this now and again but more for preventing food waste. I got so sick of my Christmas ham leftovers that I made the last bits into sandwiches and froze them. Still got one left, and they aren’t soggy when defrosted.
