Frozen sandwiches

When I was at school my mother used to prepare our sandwiches eg at the start of term, and freeze them.

We would then take a sandwich each day, and as to how defrosted it was by lunch really varied by the time of the year.

In winter, still a bit solid.

In the height of summer, just..: very wet.

We had a good laugh about this at the weekend - but my mother says we are being v unreasonable and she sees no issue with it.

I think I’d rather probably get a a letter from school if I did this. They were terrible.

Who is unreasonable here - her for making us eat these abominations for years, or us for taking the piss.

Haha my MIL did this, DH is still traumatised.
The ongoing joke in my family is that we got cheese and dog hair sandwiches for lunch every day. So many pets, I don't think I ever ate anything prepared in that house that didn't include pet hair.

I think parents hated their kids in the 80’s my mum used to make powdered milk up with tepid tap water every morning for our cereal. The powder never used to properly dissolve either 🤢 I’m just grateful she didn’t follow that up with a frozen sarnie I suppose.

LaughingCat · 09/02/2023 21:30

Whaaaat? Glad I had school lunches now! That sounds awful. I really hope that was an affordability thing as, otherwise, it’s child cruelty!

But a cruelty I’m filing away in case I ever need to do the same 😂

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 09/02/2023 21:30

My mum also did this but for a week not a whole term. Those sandwiches ended up in the bin 9 times out of 10. They tasted vile. She claims that she can't remember doing this but, oh boy, she did!

Latenightreader · 09/02/2023 21:31

A friend who was a supply teacher used to do this - a few ham or cheese sandwiches in the freezer, if she had a call about a job she could grab one and go. She swore by it!

fluffi · 09/02/2023 21:33

I used to make batch make ham sandwiches for work, then weren't soggy. However I'd get hungry by 11am and eat them too early so I stopped!

Clymene · 09/02/2023 21:33

Yeah my mum did that too. She worked full time and had three kids. Frankly I'm impressed she made us a packed lunch every day.

What did your dad do OP? Because mine worked full time too except he did fuck all around the house.

So we used to keep the bread frozen so it didn't go off but just make the sandwich in the morning on frozen bread. I actually preferred this because I didn't disintegrate my bread when buttering it this way and it meant the edges didn't go dry. I've never tried freezing the contents though.

PriamFarrl · 09/02/2023 21:35

I saw Mary Berry suggesting this on a show a while ago.....

Christmaspyjamas · 09/02/2023 21:36

My mum did this but weekly.

It really upset me.

The sandwiches just all had peanut butter and went in my lunchbox frozen then emerged really mushed.

I felt I was a chore to her. She didn't work. I didn't understand why she couldn't make a sandwich when I was at school. Or let me make a sandwich.

Ha! Yes, children of the Eighties - our mums had some proper weird ideas. Mine used to make me drink a large glass of milk in the morning half full of oat bran, to make sure I pooed properly. It was practically impossible to drink, all the bran would clump together no matter how much you stirred…I dreaded it!

I’d have understood if we didn’t have enough fibre in our diets, but we were eating brown bread, veggies and grains for daaaays….

2tired2bewitty · 09/02/2023 21:37

My mum used to do this too, but with rolls rather than sliced bread. Sometimes it wasn’t possible to tell what was inside so I’d get my brother’s Primula spread ones rather than my ham.

nostalgic for a bit of frozen ham now ☺️

PopGoesTheProsecco · 09/02/2023 21:39

My mum did this too. It was horrible sometimes.

I feel I’ve overcompensated for this now with my own kids who take flasks to school - ‘would you like chicken tikka masala, Moroccan chicken, bolognese, Thai Green Curry, cous cous…?’ 😂

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 09/02/2023 21:41

Did she work 12 hour days? I work 10 hour days and still managed to cook or make a sandwich. Takes hardly a few mins. Frozen sandwiches sound vile

thatstaplerismine · 09/02/2023 21:22

I remember chomping through frozen fish paste sandwiches- I must have been an obliging child.

They're not supposed to be still frozen when you eat them.

CrystalCoco · 09/02/2023 21:44

Frozen bread is only good for toasting not sandwiches IMO

Can't blame you for taking the piss but I can also see why your Mum isn't seeing the funny side.

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 09/02/2023 21:44

I did this last year in that mad hot period we had in July. Worked really well then for tuna mayo on wholegrain. I wouldn't do it outside of insanely hot temperatures though.

I agree, and had the same powdered milk and uht if we were lucky.

My mam used to use frozen brown bread and frozen grated cheese, made the night before and put in the fridge.

gaggiagirl · 09/02/2023 21:47

Ham and pease pudding in buttered stottie makes a great freezer sandwich. They taste fine after defrosting. I think it all depends on the bread and fillings.

Laquila · 09/02/2023 21:47

I do this with ham sandwiches on sliced white or 50/50 - they're absolutely fine.

Eyerollcentral · 09/02/2023 21:48

Omg I can’t believe people are saying they do/did this. 100% gross

Cupcakequeen75 · 09/02/2023 21:48

Did it myself when I first moved away from home.
Bought a load of small lunch boxes (about 25) and at the beginning of the month would make a huge batch of sandwiches and pack them away in the freezer. Would take a lunchbox out every evening so it was defrosted ready for the next day. Occasionally I forgot and had half frozen sandwiches for lunch.

Although there were a few different fillings (for variety) the majority were cheese & salad cream (have never eaten butter) and I have had the same sandwiches for lunch every work day since (aged 57 now).
Only difference is I no-longer freeze them.

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 21:49

Someone I worked with years ago made sandwiches for the week and froze them. They always looked a bit sorry for themselves in a soggy way. She didn't even have DC at the time so I don't think the time saved was worth it.

TheChosenTwo · 09/02/2023 21:51

Just the idea is absolutely bloody grim to me. It takes 2 minutes to make a sandwich while I’m waiting for ds breakfast to toast/grill/bake (depending on what he’s having), when I had 3 with packed lunches they older ones made their own. Ds is the littlest and he often makes his own now anyway, he’s 11 so plenty old enough to take responsibility for his lunch providing all the stuff is there for him. I don’t even make them the night before, they are assembled on the day.
I would hate to eat frozen and defrosted sandwiches, I wouldn’t make my kids eat them either.
