For not cooking my teenager dinner

Ohdesr · 08/02/2023 21:57

So I am really trying to use everything we have in the house before shopping for more.
today i made homemade tomato soup and garlic bread. My teen complained its not filling enough so they dont want that.
Cue her complaining for the next hour that she is starved, i gave her a list of things she could eat, tuna pasta, tuna mayo jacket potato, omelette, pesto pasta, even cereal.

She has now gone off in a strop because i wont go to the shop to buy her something saucy (?!) she hasnt eaten because nothing sounds nice. And now she’s gotten her dad involved saying i am starving her. Ahhhh

Why does it need to be a huge meal? It's a meal. A meal good enough for tea in the evening.

It doesn't have to be huge but a bit more than 400 calories if it is the main meal.

midgemadgemodge · 09/02/2023 19:06

A coupe of bowls of soup and a few cheese butties and you could easily get up to over 1000 calories

Should be sufficient for most

This!

I don’t understand why meals have to be huge to begin with. What OP suggested was perfectly fine and if the teenager was still hungry, there were other choices she could help herself to after.

I’m not a competitive undereater. 😆

I am healthy though. And a healthy weight. Something to think about.

I'm in my 50s, my BMI has always been at the lower end of the healthy range so not sure what I need to "think about".

Yep, not suggesting calories are a measure of how filling something is, just pointing out how easily you can consume more calories than you need on a daily basis. I’m probably going to get jumped on now from the cohort that don’t believe in calorie counting !!

We do have people on the thread insisting that they must eat more than 7-800 calories for dinner or they’ll starve though.

700 calories of some foods is a lot of volume. 700 calories of others is really not.

Yesterday, I made over 2 litres of congee and the ingredients in it come to about 750 calories in total. It’s thick and filling. Even adding kimchi to it isn’t going to add many calories. I can’t imagine sitting down and eating 2 litres of congee.

That’s not competitive under eating. Just a large volume of food.

In contrast, I could easily consume a lot of calories before I filled my stomach if I made fondue (loads of cheese and wine!) to serve with bread and charcuterie. And I’d happily do so.

It really isn’t just the number of calories in a meal that counts for determining how filling or ‘substantial’ it is.

You probably need to think about not calling people damaging names like ‘competitive undereater’ for believing that a jacket potato stuffed with tuna Mayo and salad is a decent supper.

Why? As long as it fills you it's fine. It's fine for tea.

You probably want to think about not implying people are overweight/unhealthy if they would not be full after eating potato and a tin of tuna as their main meal of the day.

LuckySantangelo35 · 09/02/2023 19:26

@orchid220

out of interest what would you class as a substantial dinner of the kind op should be giving to her kids?
lots of people would think a large jacket potato with tuna, Mayo and salad would be more than enough

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/02/2023 19:27

I'm reading the last few pages and thinking there is a poster here who seems to have a lot of rules around food - has to be substantial, has to be so many calories - surely if it fills you up it's fine and it doesn't matter what it is. Soup, jacket, whatever.

starlingdarling · 09/02/2023 19:27

To be fair to her. I really don't like soup. It's tasty but doesn't feel like a meal without half a loaf of bread. I'd have found something else in the cupboard though!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/02/2023 19:31

Why is 'feeling full' the criteria? I don't want to feel full, I want to feel satisfied that I've had a decent meal and that I don't feel hungry.

There is a correlation. If there are few calories you may feel full temporarily but you will be hungry again soon afterwards.

It's isn't the criteria to me.

So have a snack or just remain a bit hungry. No one died from feeling hungry. Jesus. I'd hate to have these issues with food

So people who aim not to be hungry after their evening meal have issues?

@orchid220

we should eat till we are satiated not til we’re full

Well, that's what I'm getting from your posts. If it isn't your criteria for a 'substantial evening meal, ' then what is?

To put in the amount of thought you are yes. Sometimes a jacket wouldn't completely fill me so I have a yoghurt or something after. Sometimes I'm stuffed. How would you know until you'd eaten it?!

Satiated means you can't eat any more. Gorged. Stuffed.

NellietheElephantpackedhertrunks · 09/02/2023 19:47

YANBU if you would/will make her any of the options you mentioned (they are filling, nutritious and nice foods).

Ohdesr · 09/02/2023 19:49

I am interested in what accounts for a substantial meal. I was full yesterday and i am today too 😂

I hope everyone who was inspired to eat soup is full!

What makes you think I'm giving it a lot of thought? The fact I'm on this thread? you are too! Regarding whether something would make me "stuffed", I go on experience.

My criteria for a “substantial” meal would be that I don't feel hungry anymore.
Same as yours.

Anything that stops me from being hungry an hour later is substantial to me. Fullness doesn’t really factor in since I try not to eat until I’m full. The stomach pains are not worth it.
