To think the adoration of Zelensky in the UK feels very wrong?

Exactly that. Why are UK politicians lapping it all up and hanging on to his every word? The laughter from MPs when he said he enjoyed English tea but now wants English planes… in what sense is that funny? He is wanting war planes to cause more bloodshed, death and destruction. I hope this doesn’t lead to Russian retaliation.

Would you rather we'd told him not to come?
It's tricky, isn't it?

everlovelyjewel · 08/02/2023 21:19

um you do know he didn’t start the war? What’s he supposed to do, roll over and wave the white flag?

PineappleMel · 08/02/2023 21:21

A year in, I'd like to know how many people are still hungry for this war.

How many want to send tanks? To send fighter jets? To keep escalating this?

Neededanewuserhandle · 08/02/2023 21:21

I don't think the adoration is for him personally, but for the way he and the Ukranians have stood up to an attempt at an illegal invasion of their country.
If we never stand up to Russia for fear of retaliation, then we have learned nothing from history.

Safeworkspace · 08/02/2023 21:21

It's funny because he's clever, he knows how to charm us. I'm totally behind the UK govt btw - one thing I think the Tories have got right.

MrsMikeDrop · 08/02/2023 21:22

I think his bravery and tenacity is admirable. Don't think many leadera would be willing to out their lives on the line for their country. It's not surprising he's thought of so highly. You do realise people are actually dying, right OP?

I'm not hungry for any war - but the sad reality is that if we tolerate Russian aggression it won't stop at Ukraine.

pointythings · 08/02/2023 21:23

I think we should always remember that it was Russia that invaded Ukraine, and that therefore they should not be appeased in any way.

I can see why the Government would be keen to use Ukraine as good PR.

I also think Zelensky is an inspirational leader and expect he will go on to have a big role in the world, hopefully still as the leader of a free Ukraine. No one wants more bloodshed or more war. It’s worth considering that Putin could act further whether we support Ukraine or not. I don’t think standing back is definitely the right thing to do. Delicate and diplomatic balance is needed which is what I think is mostly happening. x

Genevieva · 08/02/2023 21:24

Yes.
Until war broke out Ukraine was recognised as one of the most corrupt countries in the world for both money laundering and the trafficking of women.

Lets be honest, he only came to get more free stuff. We have been hugely generous because we recognise the power difference between Ukraine and their aggressive neighbour. However, there is a sensible limit. We are also a country with vast debt and a cost of living crisis, but we have a government that seems to keep finding more money behind the sofa for Ukraine. Soon we will be left with nothing to defend ourselves with.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 08/02/2023 21:25

If Russia aren't stopped at Ukraine, then Poland is next. Think about that for a minute.

ladygindiva · 08/02/2023 21:25

I don't mean to be trivial but I think he's sexy AF. I totally would. Sorry .

Sensationalist bollocks.

Cosmos123 · 08/02/2023 21:27

There has and will continue to be lots of innocent lives which will be lost for this War.
Both sides.

I don't want my taxes to go on fighter planes.

I want my taxes to go on the NHS and nurses and teacher payrises.

I wonder what ability the UK has these days to make steel and weapons? Not like we had in WW2 that's for sure. Everything has been outsourced.

Do you have anything to support your statement? How many tanks could the UK produce per day? Just asking

Totally this

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 08/02/2023 21:29

He's awesome. He's an ordinary politician - previously a celeb in his country, a comedian - who's had to suddenly step up to the plate and become a military leader. The only but I find cringy is that all the leaders think he's awesome and hang onto his every word, but he is still literally begging for help to fight off the huge might of the Russians. He's not doing this for kudos or to win the next election, he's doing it out of desperation.
His country is the front line. If it falls, Poland or one of the others that little bit closer to us will become the front line, NATO will be involved and before you know it it'll be WW3.

WashAsDelicates · 08/02/2023 21:30

Do you know why he has to do this? Because Russia strolled into the Crimea and the whole world went "Oh dear, that's not very nice. You shouldn't do that. Oh well, you're here now."

A comedian who stood for government as a joke, to show how poor the then government was, and who never really expected to be elected, is now having to fight for his country's existence because the rest of the world was afraid of confronting a bully.

What do you think will happen if he loses? A few years ago all Putin wanted was Crimea...

ACynicalDad · 08/02/2023 21:30

The world must make sure Russia loses or they will try again. It will probably take tanks and planes to win, let’s do it quickly before Russia strengthens and keep the war as short as possible. Russia must not win. He’s an incredible leader, history will show his flaws, but he’s getting a lot right, let’s go with it.

HikingforScenery · 08/02/2023 21:31

I think the involvement of other countries like the UK is just escalating things. I don’t find the ukrainian president charming at all. She actually gives me the creeps.

Very much this.
