Shops that ask for your email

So many shops now ask for your email address when you pay, so they can email you the receipt, and / or add you to their mailing list.

I usually say just the paper receipt thanks, but does anyone else find this mildly annoying? Something I've noticed, everyone else in the queue then knows your personal details, especially if your email has your first and second name in the address...

I was thinking of making up an email specifically for shop receipts, something like stopaskingmeformyemailaddress @ outlook.com

I'm the opposite, I prefer email receipts. Easier to locate if there is an issue than a piece of paper. I also sign up to marketing emails. That's how I get discounts and know when there are sales or special promotions. I see it as a win win, use less paper and get some money off. Just delete marketing emails if I don't want them. No big deal.

Dunelm get my goat for this. We always refuse and the cashier isn't happy about it. Are they on a commission? If so , that's unacceptable.

Not commission but I worked in a store (not Dunelm) and we were expected to get 20 emails per shift for example. I was only a Christmas temp so I wasn’t too bothered. I expect management would speak to FT/perm staff if they weren’t hitting their targets.

GrimsbyOrangePippin · 06/02/2023 20:05

I was in Newlook last year with DD, and the assistant said we could have a paper copy this time, but they're stopping them within the year (so this year!!) and it's be email only.

As a middle-aged woman with no teenagers, I don't have much need or desire to go in Newlook (New Look? newLook? no idea), but they can 'get in the sea' on that one.

My list of companies that I am completely or largely boycotting is getting very long and unmanageable 👿

That's fantastic I wish I'd seen this before my dunelm visit on Saturday!'

"Yes, certainly - it's (all capitals) [email protected]". Shall we all start doing that?!

doadeer · 06/02/2023 20:13

Digital receipts will be the future, I work in online retail and in a few years I think paper receipts will be phased out however it needs to be easier to capture the receipt so you're not standing in a queue for ages spelling your name, will be something you scan. They are bringing in laws around anti waste in France so eventually UK will follow.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/02/2023 20:13

I wonder if this is just one more of those things - like online-only utility bills - where they're better in every way and you'd have to be a ridiculous old dinosaur to insist needlessly on a proper printed one... except that, every time you need to query something or prove your identity, it's 'dinosaur version' only.

As has been said, it only requires somebody to mistype one character in your email address and then you have no proof of purchase whatsoever.

Hbh17 · 06/02/2023 20:15

It's very annoying, and I always say no. I also "explain" that they don't need my email address to sell me A Whatever. They usually shut up at that point!

Hankunamatata · 06/02/2023 20:15

I have short email address for receipts. I take photos of paper receipts and mail them to myself so don't lose them.

Springis · 06/02/2023 20:16

YANBU! My local sports shop got really aggressive about it after I said I never give out my email, and they argued with me for ages, if I hadn’t needed football equipment for my son I’d have abandoned the purchase and left. “We won’t email you, we won’t bother you, we just need the email for the computer why are you being so funny about it.” Wtf.

dogdaydown · 06/02/2023 20:17

I love it! All my receipts on email? Never lost.

BTW Name change fail OP!

Anotherdayanothernight · 06/02/2023 20:20

I know someone who works in a high end department store in London and if they don't get enough email addresses/customers signing up they get pulled up on that and if no improvement they will pulled up again, so I'm guessing that is why certain stores are very persistent

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/02/2023 20:20

“We won’t email you, we won’t bother you, we just need the email for the computer why are you being so funny about it.” Wtf.

"It's essential that we have this piece of your personal information that we will never, ever make use of in any way, promise...."

'Just for the computer'? Do they even understand what email is and how computers are quite good at being able to send them?

DappledThings · 06/02/2023 20:20

I just say no. Same as I do when cafes ask me for my name for my coffee order. It's so unnecessary and just makes me cringe.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/02/2023 20:22

I just say no thanks, too much stuff in my inbox anyway.,

IntentionalError · 06/02/2023 20:23

Just say no and ask for a receipt. What’s the problem, unless you struggle to use the word ‘no’ to a shop worker?

Yes, but if you didn't want to give away your email, surely you could have come up with the "no" option all by yourself?

GCMM · 06/02/2023 20:27

I just say I don't have an email address. I do, but many people don't, mostly the elderly. Neither of my parents (in their 80s) use email and I think they should still be able to get receipts. I work with people with learning disabilities, many of whom also don't have email.

BatshitBanshee · 06/02/2023 20:28

Princesspollyyy · 06/02/2023 19:51

Yes, I do, as I said in my opening post?

What an odd thing to NC for, @Shiningstarr @Princesspollyyy .

Sazzling · 06/02/2023 20:29

Tell them that a condition of your parole is that you can't access the internet

goingoinggonee · 06/02/2023 20:31

I loose paper receipts so I like this

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/02/2023 20:31

You could always just make up a random email address depending on the shop. Say if Boots hassle you for one, tell them it's [email protected]; or if it's the Apple store, give them [email protected]

Fair enough if they offer it as a free-choice option for customers, but it's appalling if staff are punished because customers don't wish to give over their personal details. It's guaranteed to drive some staff to aggression and deceit in order to try not to be disciplined/sacked. What disreputable, shameful employers.

MargaritMargo · 06/02/2023 20:32

Yes I find it irritating however I have slightly changed my perspective when I couldn’t find the paper copy of a receipt when I wanted to take something back… and had paid in cash…. And it was expensive!!!

I was regretting my choice then!

I now tend to say “a paper copy is fine” if it’s something relatively cheap and I’m sure it won’t need returning. However for bigger, more expensive purchases, an email receipt is not a bad idea at all.

Megapint · 06/02/2023 20:32

I have an email I use just for this. I get some good money off vouchers/ discount codes & advance notice of sales. Plus all my receipts are there if I need them.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2023 20:33

I like an email receipt. it doesn't bother me at all.
