Shops that ask for your email

So many shops now ask for your email address when you pay, so they can email you the receipt, and / or add you to their mailing list.

I usually say just the paper receipt thanks, but does anyone else find this mildly annoying? Something I've noticed, everyone else in the queue then knows your personal details, especially if your email has your first and second name in the address...

I was thinking of making up an email specifically for shop receipts, something like stopaskingmeformyemailaddress @ outlook.com

Zara is even worse as they push you to download the app to receive the receipt there. And they really do look at you like you're Jurassic if you refuse.

2Old2BABPpresenter · 06/02/2023 20:35

I always say no thanks and get a paper receipt. If they push I just say I’ve got over 9000 unread emails and I don’t need anymore thanks. If they really push I’ve said no thanks and walked and bought the item somewhere else or gone without. I don’t need to be giving my email to everyone. I don’t do it with my phone number or address so I don’t see it any differently.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/02/2023 20:37

Nothing wrong at all with them offering it - but no need at all for any comment, complaint or nagging if you decline.

PlanBea · 06/02/2023 20:39

I don't like giving out my email address to stores for e receipts, it's easy enough to say no, but it really annoys me when they phrase it to presume you'll say yes.

So "would you like to have an e-receipt?" - ok
"What's your email address for your receipt?" - no
even worse the time they were fairly new and I was just asked "what's your email address?" With no context.

I hate it in Lidl, too, where they always ask if you have the app. I do, but it always logs me out; then I have to try to remember the password (it insists on a complicated one) and take the time to log in again, so I usually don't bother. It's all for their benefit, but they sell it as though it's for yours.

sunglassesonthetable · 06/02/2023 20:42

Agree is a PITA.

Don't try and wheedle your way into my inbox.

Ostagazuzulum · 06/02/2023 20:44

I used to take the email receipt as I thought it'd always be easier to store receipts there until he day I wanted to return a dress and found that the email receipt was never received or sent. I went to the shop and they went through emails of that day and mine was t there. I could prove I'd bought it on bank statement but it wasn't enough for refund. I always ask for paper receipt now

I know someone who works in a high end department store in London and if they don't get enough email addresses/customers signing up they get pulled up on that and if no improvement they will pulled up again, so I'm guessing that is why certain stores are very persistent

Yeah retail is shit for this.
It's not even just "pulled up" it's verbal and written warnings for not hitting numbers

Precipice · 06/02/2023 20:46

I think it is wrong of them to ask. It's an intrusion of privacy. It's asking for personal data that is not necessary to complete the transaction.

Mostly when I've encountered this, it was presented not as an option, but as a necessity, both for sales and for refunds. Not "would you like a paper receipt or would you like an email receipt?" with the second option necessarily requiring giving an email address, but a straight out "what's your email address?" or "can I have your email address?". Often people are suggestible and go along with it, not analysing it in the moment, and that's what they rely on.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 06/02/2023 20:49

Nah it's useful. I always lose receipts but can't lose an email. Just unsubscribe if they send you crap

maddiemookins16mum · 06/02/2023 20:50

Dunelm are the worst. I just say, I’d prefer it not to be emailed thanks.

bluelid · 06/02/2023 20:51

I don't know why, in the year 2023, there is not just some app you can have your phone that gives a QR code for the cashier to scan and then saves the receipt to your phone. A bit like a tesco Clubcard type thing. It would save paper and be much quicker!

Maybe I should retrain in computer coding/ app design and make my millions...

BentleyRhythmAce · 06/02/2023 20:52

Not everyone has email.

VerbenaGirl · 06/02/2023 20:53

It’s a bit annoying (particularly as I have to spell mine out), but it is really handy if you need to return something - as the receipt is safe in you email.

LolaSmiles · 06/02/2023 20:54

I don't mind them asking because I decline politely.

What I really mind is that they ask the question in a tone and way that suggests this is the norm, without making it clear that it's entirely optional.

Aside from me not wanting to give it, it also holds the queue up as people say their email, then the assistant needs to check the spelling of the name, was there a dot before your surname, was that .co.uk or .com.

I've stopped shopping places that do that and places that push loyalty cards, store cards of random upselling at the tills. It's a nuisance.

CohenTree · 06/02/2023 20:54

I was in a shop queue and the man in front was asked for his name and address. He was buying a packet of lightbulbs. He resisted and was finally told that lightbulbs contain components that can be used for crime. So he told them his name was Billy Bunter, 5 High Street, Billytown. The shop assistant took it down without batting an eyelid.

LakieLady · 06/02/2023 20:59

I never give mine and to be frank, I get pissed off with being asked.

I get enough bloody spam without giving out my email address every time I go shopping.

Ducksurprise · 06/02/2023 21:00

I love email recipts as I lose paper ones. I have an email special for shit like this something along the lines of
[email protected]

Cyclebreaker · 06/02/2023 21:01

YANBU. It is not mildly annoying it is fucking irritating.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 06/02/2023 21:05

Have a very simple outlook email just for receipts Job Done

ALongHardWinter · 06/02/2023 21:06

I've never been asked for my email to send me a receipt! Which shops does this happen in? The only time I e ever been asked for my email address in a shop was when I was returning an item of clothing.

Mylittlesandwich · 06/02/2023 21:07

I love email receipts. I always loose paper ones.

LateToTheParty · 06/02/2023 21:12

Not a fan of this, and I don't get asked often but twice last year I received email receipts for purchases made in store at two different clothes shops miles away, followed by welcome emails, then umpteen marketing emails. Contacted them to ask them to unsubscribe me but every so often another one arrives. I'm not even on top of my own email, never mind managing someone else's...

LlynTegid · 06/02/2023 21:13

Just say no.

Though if I knew the email address of someone such as Michael O'Leary or Philip Green, I'd be tempted to give it.
