Shops that ask for your email

Shiningstarr · 06/02/2023 19:47

So many shops now ask for your email address when you pay, so they can email you the receipt, and / or add you to their mailing list.

I usually say just the paper receipt thanks, but does anyone else find this mildly annoying? Something I've noticed, everyone else in the queue then knows your personal details, especially if your email has your first and second name in the address...

I was thinking of making up an email specifically for shop receipts, something like stopaskingmeformyemailaddress @ outlook.com

Tell them that a condition of your parole is that you can't access the internet

love this.

PotterLottery · 06/02/2023 21:19

I wouldn't mind if they just sent you an email with the receipt on it.

It's the fact they almost always sign you up for the mailing list as well without asking which is bloody cheeky if you ask me.

Same when you have to order food using an app in a restaurant (pizza hut in looking at you)

It’s really annoying, yes. I just say no. It’s not the shop assistant’s fault that head office have such a shit policy.

Similarly, the postcode thing gets on my tits. They are doing it to see how far people travel to the stores (and if they can open/close branches) but it feels unnecessarily nosy.

What postcode thing? I've never been asked that

@LynneBenfield I prefer email hotel receipts for my expenses, it's easier for me to upload

Firecarrier · 06/02/2023 21:24

Yes it's annoying and no I don't give it, what annoys me more is the way they're trained to ask, they tend to say 'do you have an email address?' well, who doesn't? I'd be more inclined to give it if they just asked if I mind.

It's like when you go in a bar, they're told to ask "is that a double?" because most people will say yes.

I'm very stubborn and resist being manipulated, however mildly by anyone.

There is one exception which is that occasionally, e.g. when buying an expensive item, I have thought about it in advance (even if that's only in advance in the queue), and have decided to give them my email so that I have the receipt in an email if I need to invoke a warranty or similar and can't find the paper receipt many months or even years later. Asking everyone who is buying a pair of socks etc. is just fishing for information and annoying.

I was in seasalt for an increasingly irritating 19 minutes buying a couple of pairs of socks from their sale....😂... (Think Alan Rickman in love actually.... without the unfaithfulness 😅). I was their only customer.

First the IT system was slow, then they couldn't find my address then couldn't find my email.....

I had already told them i was on a very short timescale....

In the end I just said, you either sell them to me now or I'm leaving (had a rapidly approaching dental appt....)

gawditswindy · 06/02/2023 21:27

I just tell them that I don't have an email address. Grin

BentleyRhythmAce · 06/02/2023 20:52

Not everyone has email.

I shop for other people sometimes, no email so I need a paper receipt to give them. Otherwise I would have to gonhome and print it off

blippyissilly · 06/02/2023 21:35

I told the young lad on the till in Halfords that I did'nt have an email. His face was a picture

He then asked for my car reg, I told him that I did'nt have a car!

JustRingJoeDuffy · 06/02/2023 21:43

I say no if there is a queue and I've already been waiting to pay and dont want to waste another 2 mins faffing about with email addresses.
But I dont mind them asking for it - 80% of my shopping is online anyway, so chances are that I'm already on their mailing list.

ShakeYourFeathers · 06/02/2023 21:44

Howtoberight · 06/02/2023 19:54

My email address is annoyingly long and also includes my full name which is tricky to spell, so I also have to spell it out. I just say I'll have a paper receipt please. Most of the times I've given it I can see the cashier regretting it about half way through me spelling it out!

I'm the same

And it's such a faff that I always get a paper receipt especially if it's something that might need to be returned

Donna1001 · 06/02/2023 21:49

GlassBunion · 06/02/2023 19:58

Dunelm get my goat for this. We always refuse and the cashier isn't happy about it. Are they on a commission? If so , that's unacceptable.

I overheard a couple of assistants talking about this in either New Look or Next. One assistant told the other he had got her some email addresses whilst she was away from her till.

so yes, I think at least on some shops they are on commission, or get some kind of bonus.

starlingdarling · 06/02/2023 19:59

It annoyed me until my colleague had their house burgled. The insurers were mostly good but did ask for proof of purchase for a few items and she didn't have it. Now I volunteer to give my email address then unsubscribe if they add me to a mailing list.

Hadn’t thought of this! My parents had similar when they were burgled too

PuddlesPityParty · 06/02/2023 21:56

I think it’s more they get berated by management for not getting the emails rather than being on commission.

MrsClatterbuck · 06/02/2023 21:59

I have only given my email address a few times and just say I want a paper receipt as it is easier to return instead of faffing about with my phone.
looking at you M&S with having to use the app or email to return an item ordered online as they no longer include a paper receipt
Also when buying a few items in local shops they ask you do you want a receipt. I usually say no but the other week the guy just gave me my receipt and I was thankful as I left an item behind and when I went back to get it they asked for my receipt

OneFrenchEgg · 06/02/2023 22:00

I've got a specific email address I use, (think shopping@gmail type address) and it's brilliant - I use it for only kind of invoice, mailing lists etc and only have it on one device so I don't get random mail on my phone.

aSpanielintheworks · 06/02/2023 22:00

I just say no thanks, a paper one is fine, I've never had any funny looks at all.

Treeeeeeee · 06/02/2023 22:02

I much prefer them. I can guarantee I will have lost the paper receipt by the end of the day, an email one I will keep and have a copy of if I ever need to return something/make a warranty claim etc. If you don't want it just say no

No, it's to avoid disciplinary

Itsrudemeghan · 06/02/2023 22:09

I actually find email receipts more convenient but New Look drive me insane as they add me into marketing emails every single time. And then I have to unsubscribe every single time because New Look email you DAILY

Hmmmm2018 · 06/02/2023 22:22

Somewhat off topic,I got asked for my name when at the till paying to go swimming the other day, I was irrationally annoyed by it,all I wanted to do was pay to go swimming, lady on till insisted I needed to give her a name to go swimming, so I replied Joe blogs. I think I was annoyed as the man in front of me had not been allowed swimming either as it was card only and he only had cash. The petty bureaucracy of it all wound me up.

UdoU · 06/02/2023 22:24

I always get both when available, printed and email.

SirenSays · 06/02/2023 22:27

My local Dunelm is the worst for this. Every time I go it seems like theres only two staff members in the whole store asking the least tech savvy people to remember email addresses they don't ever use. It takes absolutely ages to check out

Christmascracker0 · 06/02/2023 22:30

YANBU, it’s not great having to give out your whole email address in a busy shop!

Usually once you have given them your email address once it links to your card on their system though.. so I just start spelling my email address and then say “oh is it already on your system?”

Maray1967 · 06/02/2023 23:03

2bazookas · 06/02/2023 19:51

I ALWAYS require a paper receipt in the shop, before I leave with the goods.

So do I. I do not want it emailing, I want the till receipt there and then.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/02/2023 23:08

I find this concerning, how you're either asked or, more often, not asked at all, if you want a receipt, rather than being given one by default. Self-service machines in supermarkets do this too, if you're spending under a certain amount - again defaulting to No, unless you specify Yes.

I get that many people won't want them or will just throw them away anyway; but these same shops will still expect you to present the receipt if there is a problem with your goods or you want an exchange. A suspicious part of me wonders if this might be deliberate: using the excuse of saving paper and 'not bothering people' when they know full-well that a percentage of people will have issues requiring refunds, but will not be able to prove purchase and so the shop will dishonestly benefit.

I also hate the way that WH Smith never give you a receipt unless you specifically ask for it - ostensibly under the guise of saving paper - but they do nevertheless give you a bundle of vouchers (often of dubious benefit) printed on the same paper, without you ever asking for them.
