Received a verbal invite one day before.
Would you go?

Currently the situation I'm in.

Why not?

lowclouds · 04/02/2023 13:12

Absolutely, if I was available and liked them and it sounded like a good party.

I was giving out last minute evening invitations to my wedding up to a few days before the event, just when I bumped into acquaintances.

I think it's fine and am also happy to receive them that way for people who are more acquaintances/ not as close.

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 04/02/2023 13:14

More information needed, but the chances are high that I would not go. As pps have said, it looks like some people have pulled out, and they are trying to make up the numbers. They knew they were getting married sooner than 24 hours before, and would have had plenty of time to invite you much earlier. So, no I wouldn't go. I'm no-one's substitute, reserve, or second best. Fuck that.

Blankspace35 · 04/02/2023 13:14

I would go as long as it wouldnt leave me short of money for that weeks bills (weekly paid)

Forestwalks · 04/02/2023 13:15

No I wouldn’t, unless it was a last minute wedding of a good friend or family member then I would the effort.
I take it it’s an invite due to drop outs which I wouldn’t entertain as obviously not that close to begin with.

pristinesurfacesGBTD · 04/02/2023 13:16

Is the invite for the whole day or evening do only? Not that it really matters.

I'd go if it was convenient and I liked them, but do realise this is a 'room meat' situation, ie you'd be making up numbers. Nothing wrong with that if you'd enjoy going to a wedding.

Unfortunately some guests are shit and let their host down at the last minute. You'd probably be doing them a favour and having yourself a fun time

Might even meet someone nice 😁

Go for it 🎉

Hidingawaytoday · 04/02/2023 13:17

I like weddings, so probably - but I wouldn't feel bad about declining if i didn't feel like it/had other plans.

I think the context adds a lot here - if it was a close relative who was getting married with only two witnesses and one had to pull out then almost definitely. If it was a distant friend getting married the other side of the country, then almost definitely not.

IncompleteSenten · 04/02/2023 13:18

Someone must have dropped out at the last minute.

If I liked them and I could afford to go and I wanted to go then yes, of course.

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/02/2023 13:18

If it’s not inconvenient, why not?

OoooohMatron · 04/02/2023 13:18

You obviously didn't make the cut and someone else has cancelled last minute. Even so, if you want to and you think it'll be fun then why not. If it's a hassle then no.

DisforDarkChocolate · 04/02/2023 13:18

As long as the don't expect me to stay late and dance I'd go. I love a wedding, have a few suitable outfits and live near some good shops for presents.

I think that lots of weddings are a bloody nightmare to organise, especially the guest list. I'd happy take the place of someone who dropped out so their food wasn't wasted.

TenoringBehind · 04/02/2023 13:19

If it was a spontaneous last minute small wedding then yes - would much prefer that to a full on planned for 3 years OTT affair.

if it was because too many guests had pulled out of a wedding that had been arranged for ages and I was being asked to make up the numbers then probably not

ExtraOnions · 04/02/2023 13:20

I find that the unexpected days / nights out, end up being the most fun

Saschka · 04/02/2023 13:24

I couldn’t be bothered arranging childcare, but pre-kids if I had no other plans and it was local, I might have put a frock on and turned up.

I wouldn’t be offended to be asked so late but I wouldn’t think they particularly wanted me there either, it’s obviously just to make up the numbers.

ShimmeringShirts · 04/02/2023 13:30

Were they drunk or otherwise under the influence when they invited you? If so, I’d not take it as a genuine invite.

Mrsjayy · 04/02/2023 13:31

Changed my mind even if I was an afterthought and I liked them I'd go

SunshineAndFizz · 04/02/2023 13:32

Yeah if it was easy to get too/not too expensive.

Weddings are fun, and they always have limited numbers so don't feel bad about not originally being invited. Just enjoy it x x

drpet49 · 04/02/2023 13:33

BellaJuno · 04/02/2023 13:04

Nope, clearly making up the numbers so I’d decline.

This

musicforthesoul · 04/02/2023 13:36

If it was local and I was free (and had a suitable outfit already) I'd probably go. Why not?

I wouldn't be worrying about a gift or going to a huge amount of trouble for a clearly making up the numbers invite though.

PhillySub · 04/02/2023 13:38

They have more than likely had a cancellation and you are second choice and you have been specially picked.🤔

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 04/02/2023 13:39

Nope.

Not because I'd be offended, but because I couldn't be arsed with it, lol.

bridgetreilly · 04/02/2023 13:40

Go if you want to, don’t if you don’t. Why is this so complicated to understand?

Aprilx · 04/02/2023 13:42

Forestwalks · 04/02/2023 13:15

No I wouldn’t, unless it was a last minute wedding of a good friend or family member then I would the effort.
I take it it’s an invite due to drop outs which I wouldn’t entertain as obviously not that close to begin with.

That’s the absolutely opposite way I would think of it. I would wonder why a very good friend or family member only invited me at the last minute and I would maybe not go in that case.

Whereas if it were a more causal friend, I would understand that maybe I am there because somebody closer to them dropped out and I would happily go along if I had no other plans.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/02/2023 13:43

I had an invite a week before. I didn't go. As they either forgot to invite or I was an afterthought.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 04/02/2023 13:45

Thinking back to my own wedding in the dark ages - it wasn't unusual to have gifts from people you weren't close to or inviting to the wedding. I remember my mum asking at least two lots of her friends in the week before the wedding when they had arrived with gifts.
