I ve just last night finished watching.. so late to the party... what a series!!! and 100% agree can't have another unless Catherine came back as a copper (that does happen after all) and Ryan became a TLR type character... seeking revenge on her for killing his dad!!! which won't happen.

Agree Joanne's murder, Rob the teacher and the chemist was all a bit rushed as was the Darius stuff, too many loose ends, needed a 2 hour final episode.

Yes!! So agree with the loose ends that were tied up in what seemed like a minute at the end.

I absolutely loved all of it, but Series 1 was a true masterpiece.

Blossomtoes · 29/03/2023 14:20

Yes, a final extended episode would have worked but did you really care about the pharmacist? I didn’t.

...wouldn't you have wanted to have seen his face when finally caught for Joanne's brutal murder, his former lover? Robs face as he is finally humiliated as a paedophile and abuser, arrested in front of all the children he has bullied?

Ryans torment as he realises his dad is dead?

Too many loose ends BUT perhaps that has been the series brilliance? having all the answers isn't always good and its better to leave us all guessing and wanting more!

I just can't believe i missed it all first time around.

XelaM · 29/03/2023 15:42

I definitely agree it was rushed at the end and I did care about the horrible pharmacist and would have wanted him brought to justice. Also, no mention of ryan brutally murdering Darius' brother and associates? I actually didn't like/get the connection between Ryan (the thug) and some sophisticated criminal like Darius and why Darius would bother helping him to such an extent.

XelaM · 29/03/2023 15:44

Sorry I mean Tommy brutally murdering Darius' brother*

Got Tommy and Ryan mixed up 😂

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 29/03/2023 15:49

I definitely would have liked to have seen more of a conclusion to Faisal the pharmacist's story. At first I thought 'oh he's accidentally become a drug dealer but seems a bit weak and useless'. Then after the scene where he bludgeoned her to death I was pretty invested in where his storyline was going. To me it just felt like they ran out of time rather than making an artistic decision to leave some loose ends. Otherwise they wouldn't have had that two minutes summation by Catherine's boss. Was definitely the weak point of the series.

Yes there was no hint of any sort of connection between Darius and Tommy in series 1 and 2, the opposite as Darius shot Ashley for double crossing him and TLR had to leg it too....

But perhaps the plan was always to get Tommy out of prison and for Darius to kill him off as he knew too much, someone did, after all, attack TLR in prison.

Agree 100%

XelaM · 29/03/2023 19:16

Completely agree with @Alexandra2001 . In Season 1 it all made sense. Tommy was a violent thug at the very bottom of the food chain in the organised crime world executing Ashley's orders. He was just particularly violent. There's no way Darius who appeared to be a very high up "boss" would ever bother driving him anywhere and treating him like some kind of prince whereas he literally just peed on one of the guys who are just like Tommy.

And also agree with @MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake that it felt super rushed at the end. It looked like they ran out of time. Having said that, I recently watched Bloodline and there the writers just completely went off the rails and were clearly on hard drugs after season 1 😂 so Happy Valley still had a powerful ending in comparison to most shows. I actually liked that she called Claire out as a total moron in Season 3. She often got on my nerves.

BankOfDave · 29/03/2023 22:03

I might have this wrong as not fresh in my memory but isn’t the Tommy & Darius connection that Tommy witnessed a murder and kept schtum. Someone else ends up/is assumed to be the fall guy and not until much later does Tommy mention to the police who it was (the brothers?). I think they owe him for silence.

Anyone else remember it similarly?!

Yes that was the connection, but the heart-to-heart between a mafia boss and someone as low down the pecking order as Tommy seemed very unrealistic and unnecessary

XelaM · 29/03/2023 22:06

Also that he was some kind of superman and managed to kill the whole mafia crew including Darius' brother, none of whom were armed.

Yes. That’s what I thought too.

I just put this on another thread, but I've been trying to get my James Norton fix 😍 and I started watching "The Grantchester" . It's also a crime series but very different in feel to "Happy Valley" but really surprised by how much I like it. James Norton plays the lead but he's priest (so very far removed fromTommy Lee Royce 😂) but he's SO good in it and very hot!

BankOfDave · 03/04/2023 20:47

I do like James Norton 😊 I’d only seen him play ‘posh’ characters before I found Happy Valley. He was in the BBC adaptation of War & Peace and then Mafia, so I had to do a double take with his northern accent and psycho behaviour in HP!

Not seen Granchester, next on my list!

I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that I've been trying to obsessively watch anything with James Norton recently 😅

Here's what I tried...

Rogue Agent (Netflix) - it's a film based on the recent Netflix true crime documentary about a guy who pretended to be an MI5 agent and ended up kidnapping several women on false pretences. It's an entertaining watch, but nothing Earth-shatteringly good.

The Trial of Christine Keeler (ITVX) - he plays Stephen Ward in the Profumo affair. I actually didn't like him in this. I would go as far as saying he was almost insufferable and he kept calling everyone "Little baby" 😬

War and Peace - I really tried to watch it, but I'm Russian and I love the novel and I really couldn't get over the cast (especially Pierre 🤦‍♀️) and the only great War and Peace film that captured the essence of the novel was the 1958 War and Peace with Audrey Hepburn as Natasha, Mel Ferrer as Prince Andrei and Henry Fonda as Pierre. All other attempts (even the famous Russian series) were horrific I thought.

So far by far my favourite has been Grantchester (ITVX). He's so beautiful in it 😍 and the script is great fun, although it's a very feel-good crime crime drama and nothing like Happy Valley.

Not yet. Haven't been able to find it for free 😅

x2boys · 04/04/2023 09:40

Im.another one who.was new to Happy Valley I hadn't watched a single episode untill.series three ended ,I binged, watched all.three series over about three weeks agree that the ending.with the pharmacist and teacher was all a bit to neat, and tidy but in the whole it was tremendous series .

XelaM · 04/04/2023 09:54

In particular Season 1 and the accountant story has to be some of the best TV script writing ever. His meeting with Nev about a pay raise and all the subsequent events had me from the first word

@mum2jakie Ohhh thank you so much! Will definitely check it out

XelaM · 29/04/2023 23:07

Just got back from watching James Norton on stage in A Little Life. How insanely talented is this man?! The subject-matter of the play is horrific but his performance on stage was out if this world great (plus the bonus of full frontal nudity 🤣). Honestly, the play is for (very robust) adults but his performance is incredible.

And thank you to the posters who recommended MacMafia. I'm Russian originally and usually all shows about Russians are a bit cringeworthy, but in this show the depiction is very close to the truth 😂 and most of the Russian parts are played by native-speakers.
