Don’t think I can bring myself to watch this segment on Packed Lunch. Debilitating for them apparently…

This really pisses me off. Having gone through the menopause and recognise it's a big thing, and at least being talked about more, by Davina etc, then this latest bullshit I find incredibly insulting.

I also do not understand the anger. For once females have been a default human and medical research and resources have gone to us first for the myriad of symptoms that come with ageing. What’s wrong with men playing second fiddle this time around? How is it bullshit that men also age and also experience many of the same symptoms that we do? The label “male menopause” is rubbish, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a health issue.

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/02/2023 17:58

@Onnabugeisha what are you referring to when you talk about women being first when it comes to research into this area?

Also, it's not age that causes these symptoms in men, nor is it falling hormones. It is social and lifestyle issues, eg stress, weight gain etc as the NHS page clearly lays out.

Don't be! People know its not a thing really. No doubt men might go through something but nothing even remotely close.

I've known women who have taken 10+ years to go through the menopause. I saw one admitted to a psych hospital because of it. One had to have a hysterectomy. All of them struggled. Whatever it is men go through, its nothing like this.

I’m referring to recognition of menopause as a cause for many symptoms that were previously thought to be lifestyle or stress related. That old stigma still exists of women being offered anti-depressants….when they need HRT.

The NHS page is a bit out of date vs the stuff on PubMed.

It can be an age related thing. As you get older, your hormone levels drop which leads to the symptoms shown.

I'm not saying that all depression is caused by this - but lowered testosterone levels can lead to depression on its own.

It might be in some cases.

Yes - some women have absolutely horrifying issues during the menopause.

But some men will suffer from depression as a result of lowered hormone levels just as women do. And some depression will lead to suicide

maddy68 · 03/02/2023 18:13

Why are women womansplaining mens symptoms. The absolute irony.

Season0fTheWitch · 03/02/2023 18:15

AFAB men can get periods and the menopause

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/02/2023 18:18

@Onnabugeisha is the menopause being recognised and researched in this way? Imo it's a topic of conversation and sometimes policy recently, but is there a noticeable increase in research into the affects of menopause on women's health? How would we know if that's the case?

If you look at the cause of the menopause, what it actually is, what it does, and who it affects, then no, men go through nothing similar. And thats ok!! 😊

As a side you mention suicide a lot. Are you ok?

Cocobutt · 03/02/2023 18:28

there is no drop in testosterone in the same or similar way to the way in which womens hormones change during peri menopause and after menopause.

@RoseslnTheHospital

No one’s saying it is anything like the menopause.

But the andropause still happens when they reach a certain age and denying it isn’t going to make it go away.

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/02/2023 18:32

"But the andropause still happens when they reach a certain age and denying it isn’t going to make it go away."

It doesn't though. "Pause" in menopause means to stop. Women cease producing progesterone. Resulting in total loss of reproductive capability. At no point do men stop producing testosterone. Nearly all men have testosterone within normal levels for all their lives. A few older men experience very low testosterone in later life, this is unusual and can be treated. It is not an "andropause".

Felix125 · 03/02/2023 18:39

What ever it is and what ever you want to call it - the drop in testosterone in some men can be devastating.

I am not belittling the menopause at all - I am saying that similar symptoms can occur in men as the grow older - and in some men it can badly effect

I'm just not happy with certain people on here mocking this effect on these men.

To be clear, I'm mocking the suggestion that there's a male menopause.

There isn't.

RealeyesRealizeReallies · 03/02/2023 18:43

It will effect some men - not all - but some. And if it does effect them, we as a society should support them and not laugh & mock them

If you're referring to the legislation re menopause becoming a PC that was proposed thats been blocked.

Can you guess why? You have one guess....

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/02/2023 18:47

@Felix125 I have a close family member who is on hormone treatment for prostate cancer. It is very similar to the effects of late onset hypogonadism as it blocks testosterone. It is unpleasant for him and has been challenging. It's got nothing to do with the menopause and he wouldn't dream of suggesting it does.

Felix125 · 03/02/2023 18:51

RoseslnTheHospital

Clearly not - as his affects are due to the cancer. (and i wish him god speed in recovery)

But sometimes, the drop in testosterone is an age thing alone and not related to any other condition

And sometimes it alone can lead to depression - and wont be related to another circumstance

affect* - no need for a capital 'A' as it is in the middle of the sentence

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/02/2023 18:55

Yes, uncommonly, in older and elderly men. It's not the main cause of depression in middle age men, or even a significant minor cause.

Thsts my understanding from looking into it (from medical sources), that its likely because the testerone has dropped much lower than 'normal' range meaning something else has caused the drastic drop.

Boo hoo.

Man shocked that a community of women set up to discuss women’s issues does not exist to validate him 🙄

Felix125 · 03/02/2023 19:14

Megifer

Yes - but sometimes it isn't.
Sometimes it caused by a natural drop with no other reason behind it

And this can lead to depression, anxiety and sometimes suicide.

But as Kalpatra says - its all just Boo Hoo - no one really cares - its just men's health after-all. We should all just 'Man Up' and allow people to mock and make jokes about it

AllOfThemWitches · 03/02/2023 19:19

Yeah, apparently they get postnatal depression too which renders them incapable of being any meaningful help with their children.
