Don’t think I can bring myself to watch this segment on Packed Lunch. Debilitating for them apparently…

Andropause is indeed a thing, but it usually just presents as gradually lowering testosterone levels, and the appearance of a dadbod tummy.

It in no way is anywhere as terrible as perimenopause/menopause.

But you know what men are like. Poor fragile things.

"Andropause" is not a thing - you are describing the normal age-related slow reduction in testosterone over many years, for men. This is about 1% a year from around the age of 40. So, the large majority of men still have testosterone levels within the male "normal" range even when elderly. Hence no loss of reproductive capability and little to no related symptoms or issues.

Megifer · 03/02/2023 16:11

Male menopause aye 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Its just a boring very standard mid life crisis brought on by the realisation they aren't 'young' anymore combined with gradual hormonal changes. Absolutely nothing like the menopause.

I always assume anyone who uses the term "male menopause" is having a bit of a naughty piss take out of men 😂

maddy68 · 03/02/2023 16:22

Jesus. Ladies. You don't do yourselves any favours www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/mens-health/in-depth/male-menopause/art-20048056

maddy68 · 03/02/2023 16:24

I am menopausal. I have had the horrible night sweats and brain dig. I thankfully haven't had mood swings or anything else. But I'm not naive enough to think that my experience is the same as fir every woman or to think that males don't suffer from declining levels of hormones as they age.

Cocobutt · 03/02/2023 16:25

I never knew that men had the ‘andropause’.

Of course it’s nothing like the menopause but it’s still very interesting and it’s good to be educated about these things

drivingavanbacknorth · 03/02/2023 16:25

No such thing as the male menopause.

Packed Lunch?

Ah, you mean the male menu-pause!

(that joke, as well as the concept, must be a good 20 years old, or more)

They don't! They have normal, very very slow, age-related reduction in testosterone whilst still having levels of testosterone within the normal range for men. This does not have any side effects, unless the man in question had very low testosterone to begin with and so drops even further and then experiences side effects. This is not usual.

It can lead to nervousness, depression, impaired memory, the inability to concentrate, fatigue, insomnia, hot flushes, and sweating.

depression is one of the conditions which leads onto suicide - and the suicide rate in men is much higher

But - at the end of the day, its just men's health - so no one rally cares and see it as a bit of a joke.

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/02/2023 16:38

Oh, hi Felix.... it's not a joke, because it's not a "thing". Those things you list may well happen to men, but it's not a "male menopause" and they don't have one single cause that can be medically addressed. They are due to various and wide ranging lifestyle issues and don't affect all men. Women will go through the menopause, all of them, at some stage in their lives unless they have a serious issue that already affects their reproductive systems. Menopause in women has specific known impacts on their health and well being.

The menopause doesn't do that to men, because they cannot go through the menopause.

All those symptoms can be linked with other things - lifestyle, generally feeling older (which is shit), booze, stress, normal aging process.

Fact remains, whatever it is, it ain't the menopause, or anything like it.

Felix125 · 03/02/2023 16:46

What ever you want to call it - its the testosterone depletion in males as they get older. And it can start as early as 40. So its a change in the hormone balance in males. This can effect them and lead to depression as one of the symptoms.

It will effect some men - not all - but some. And if it does effect them, we as a society should support them and not laugh & mock them.

Well clearly they are. That's why they have a far higher suicide risk than women and are more likely to die of other things too.

MinnieMountain · 03/02/2023 16:53

Read about the default male in medical research in “Invisible Women” @Felix125 . Male suicide is always higher, it’s not because of some unproven dip in hormones.

And thank you to PP for the NHS information. I can now wave it at DH if he ever again suggests he’s menopausal.

GinIronic · 03/02/2023 16:56

I thought men of a certain age grew a ponytail and bought a red sports car.

Onnabugeisha · 03/02/2023 16:56

Isn’t menopause also a normal, natural age related reduction in hormones?

I feel we are also being a tad dismissive of menopause if we dismiss andropause because it’s natural and age related.

Kalpatra · 03/02/2023 16:57

Erased by misogynists.

The slow gradual change you mean? The change that still means they are fertile? That change? The one that isn't the menopause?

I know low T is a thing that can cause issues but isn't that usually connected to something else (couldn't remember but just googled and kidneys and pituitary gland came up).

Tbh its no laughing matter that men who have these issues are going to get palmed off with "its just the menopause"😔

I’m happy to laugh at mock any man who claims to be going through menopause. Because that’d make him an attention-seeming ignorant wanker.

Felix125 · 03/02/2023 16:58

MinnieMountain

The majority of suicide is as a result of depression.

One of the symptoms of lowering testosterone levels is depression.

A woman who is say 50 starts to suffer from nervousness, depression, impaired memory, the inability to concentrate, fatigue, insomnia, hot flushes, and sweating. We take that serious as it could be the menopause and we quite rightly should support her through it.

Yet a man who is 50 starts to suffer from nervousness, depression, impaired memory, the inability to concentrate, fatigue, insomnia, hot flushes, and sweating. Should be told to just get on with it the 'poor little thing' it all in his head and is not that bad really......

It's a tragedy when men get menopause and become useless dried up husks of humanity just waiting to die with their disgusting aging bodies and faces. Nobody could find that attractive and they should put it away.

That's nice of you - if they are now at the point of suicide due to similar symptoms

Proves my point that no one really cares about men's health issues.

But the fact it’s mid-named, misunderstood and dismissed does rather prove the point though…
