Sam Smith's New Music Video

There's been criticism in the press over the sexualisation/borderline pornography on the video. I've just watched it. It just seems pretty misogynistic to me. He appears to smash a wine glass onto a woman's head and then it looks as though the women are being urinated upon (although it's not clear ...maybe it was meant to be champagne). What are other people's interpretation/views on it. I may well be mistaken.

It’s meant to be shocking and divide people, surely that’s why they’ve done it, and I do agree it’s getting talked about when it certainly wouldn’t be otherwise, as the song is weak.

Lots of music videos are made to shock, I still remember seeing the Prodigy video on late night MTV in the 1990s and thinking, woah, that packs a punch! You could only see it on late night mtv though, shocking music videos weren’t so readily available then..

I had a quick look and it does make me cringe - like others have said, to me it's too obviously trying to shock and he just doesn't pull it off. I've always wondered what I would do if I were a pop star, or even an actor doing seductive-type scenes, because I could never ever pull off that sultry look to camera or at another person - I know I would just look ridiculous - and this is exactly what SS looks like - he just can't pull it off - it just looks funny, like he's doing it as a joke. I always wondered if it was just me who can't pull off that sort of thing - Sam Smith has shown me it's definitely not!

Do people REALLY not see the how the imagery is conveying a golden shower? I think the picture in this tweet shows that it's quite obvious that exactly what it is.

For those of you that are old enough to remember, the Two Ronnies used to do a piss take song each week - usually based on something current and deliberately going over the top for laughs.
Unfortunately, Sam Smith just looks like Ronnie Barker dressed in a basque doing exactly the same. It’s so naff, it’s actually unintentionally hilarious.

Sam Smith is a complete wazzock (IMO) but no-one is forcing you to watch the video (it's not being rammed into anyone's eyeballs), he's by far not the only one to do an explicit video / song (WAP, anyone?), and the fat-shaming on this thread is totally uncalled for.

You’ve hit the nail on the head there. They would be considered pretty unPC these days. But we really could do with some mainstream humour again. Too many channels is great but brings along a lot of other issues.

Pah, it is no more shocking than the 'Welcome to the Pleasure Dome' video by FGTH way back in the 80s - but not such a good song. It's not original, it's all been done before - and better. I wouldn't play into his PR's hands by being shocked.
