There's been criticism in the press over the sexualisation/borderline pornography on the video. I've just watched it. It just seems pretty misogynistic to me. He appears to smash a wine glass onto a woman's head and then it looks as though the women are being urinated upon (although it's not clear ...maybe it was meant to be champagne). What are other people's interpretation/views on it. I may well be mistaken.

It’s basically Pat Butcher having a gang bang isn’t it? 😆

To be honest I was expecting to be more shocked by the amount of stuff about it online. I’ve seen and heard a lot worse - Prince- Get off, various Madonna things, George Michael - Outside, etc etc.

It actually made me laugh.

I saw some posts on twitter saying that people don't like the fact that he's embracing his feminine side and wearing feminine clothes. I can't see anything feminine in his look or dress.

How dare you! Pat Butcher was lovely!

LimeTwists · 30/01/2023 15:50

I’m tired of 20 year olds saying that people who object to any of it are transphobic fatphobic old sad old boomers with vanilla sex lives who will regret their criticism of it in twenty years. No. I was living with a transvestite and two gay men at 20. Nothing really shocks me. I still think the video is pointlessly sexual shite. He’s clearly meant to be getting a mouthful of ‘piss’, so yes, that’s arguably too far for a commercial pop video. I think the nipple tassels and corset emphasise his male body in a way that just looks a bit silly and badly dressed, rather than erotic. Madonna’s Justify My Love video did gender bending in a way that was mesmerising.

Figgygal · 30/01/2023 15:53

Not seen all of it definitely don't want my kids watching it based on the leather clad grinding i did see.
Not sure how It is relevant to the actual song???

BiggerBoat1 · 30/01/2023 15:54

Its a rubbish song and him poncing about in his spanx isn't going to disguise that.

LaForza101 · 30/01/2023 15:54

Compared to WAP this feels quite tame. It's not great that our culture has reached this point of hypersexualisation but the focus on this compared to the wealth of other hypersexualised content out there feels homophobic.

We were exposed to this stuff in the 90s/00s through MTV. The difference now is that kids are exposed to porn much earlier so they know the inferences. Most of it went over our heads.

Am I a fan of this? No. But I don't think it has quite the corrupting effect on youth as people suggest. Not compared to kids being able to share porn so easily via their phones.

35965a · 30/01/2023 15:55

Sam Smith is a joke who gets off on any attention, negative included.

Ryder68 · 30/01/2023 15:57

leather clad grinding
I read that as leather dad grinding. Well we have dad dancing.......

“I have no idea where you got the idea that it's urine being sprayed, especially as they (inc Sam Smith) open their mouths for it!”

oh my sweet summer child 😂

😂
I swear some people have been locked in Mary Whitehouse land.

onionringcheeseypuff · 30/01/2023 16:01

I'm another who hates all these hyper sexualised videos

I really don't like him but even if another si bed had med this video, it just overly sexualised to sell the ideas rather than any skill in the song

I remember when I had to wait up till past ten pm to watch music videos for music with parental warnings

I feel like some parents don't understand what content is safe for kids now. And why this isn't for so many reasons. It's not that "parents should control their childrens viewing content" would be enough to flag this as gross and in appropriate, it's that as not being deemed sexual fetishist it doesn't get flagged as in appropriate by content filters! So children see it

EldersOfTheInternet · 30/01/2023 16:01

Yeah, I'm not going to watch it, mostly because I quite often fall asleep to YouTube and then what it thinks I want to watch infiltrates my dreams (or nightmares)

AlisonDonut · 30/01/2023 16:02

It's a piss drinking fetish video. It's just actual piss wouldn't be quite as boundary overstepping as it would be over the line not scouting round it.

lifeturnsonadime · 30/01/2023 16:04

I think it is this combined with the fact that Sam Smith identifies as non -binary and has removed the female category from the Brit awards that is the most offensive part.

Sam doesn't think women exist as a sex class or should have recognition in their own right but is happy to parody women in a highly sexualised way.

As well as the fact that it is yet more normalisation of fetishes for kids.

My feelings exactly!

thinkponk48 · 30/01/2023 16:09

I just watched it. It's terrible!! I can see what he was going for but honestly it's nearly comedy. And it's a terrible song

He's trying so hard to be edgy but I actually laughed

Bananamilkshakewirthcream · 30/01/2023 16:10

Just watched it. So it's a small chubby man in a dress acting out a few sexual fetishes including drinking piss.

It's quite laughable really but then I am not easily shocked. There were far worse and more sexist music videos in the 90s.

In the 90s there'd be one man surrounded by hundreds of younger bikini clad women all curating around him.

At least Sam is joining in with the piss drinking.

2023forme · 30/01/2023 16:11

JusteanBiscuits · 30/01/2023 15:11

I wouldn't say it is any more sexualised than many many other videos over the last 30 years. Remember Eric Prydz Call on Me video?!!

I think it's a drag queen that the bottle hits. And I have no idea where you got the idea that it's urine being sprayed, especially as they (inc Sam Smith) open their mouths for it!

@JusteanBiscuits
urinating into the mouth is a fairly common kink in those who are into water sports though - I’d say this is certainly what is being alluded to in the video

Whiskeypowers · 30/01/2023 16:12

I suppose you have to be “look at me”when you are such a non event to start off with.
the photo i saw of a video still was enough to put me off.
also fed up of him promoting his “status” like some sort of non binary terrorist. It’s tedious and nobody actually gives a shit.

Ew. That’s vile.🤢

FamBae · 30/01/2023 16:13

I remember all the kerfuffle re the Frankie Goes To Hollywood Relax video .... nothing's new really, and people have been hit over the head with bottles since the beginning of film making, ref Diana giving Charles a good clout on a royal walk about.
Is it supposed to be tongue in cheek? because I actually found it quite funny,

Love the Pat Butcher reference 😁

Couldn't have put it better myself...and that whiny voice.

Madamecastafiore · 30/01/2023 16:16

OMFG. What's happened! He's no Beyoncé or Madonna, there must be someone with enough guts in his entourage or management team to hold up a mirror, stand up and tell him what a fucking hash he's making of his career.

If he doesn't be careful he'll end up in a basement of a drag club in Blackpool at this rate.

Nagado · 30/01/2023 16:16

It might have been original and shocking when Frankie Goes to Hollywood did it, but that was accompanied by a good song. This is just a tired, unoriginal imitation. It was more eye rolling than jaw dropping.

Sam, mate, what are you doing? Take some time off, sort your head out, stop worrying about Brit award categories because there wasn’t one to show how special and individual you are, and get yourself back to writing some more of those good songs that you made your name with. You’ve become tiresome.

ShakespearesBlister · 30/01/2023 16:16

Ok I did it. Wish I hadn't really. Well I can see it being popular initially but he's just carried on with the Unholy theme taking it further but it will soon become boring. One thing I did notice and I hate to fat shame, but after his last dramatic image change where he lost lots of weight he suddenly seems to have piled it all back on. And more. Not a flattering look to be honest. Like it or not sex sells but some artists don't do it tastefully, I mean Madonna just makes me think 'oh just go away grandma, it's boring now!' but Kylie has always used sex more tastefully by using less of it if that's possible. The whole thing looks a bit goth/vamp queen with Sam Smith spending most of the video spreading his crotch apart. I actually gagged at one point. I think he's gone for the shock element but the trouble with that is people quickly get desensitised and you have to keep going further and further to get the same impact. I don't think there's any going back to boy next door for this one after this. He just looks ridiculous.
