Sam Smith's New Music Video

There's been criticism in the press over the sexualisation/borderline pornography on the video. I've just watched it. It just seems pretty misogynistic to me. He appears to smash a wine glass onto a woman's head and then it looks as though the women are being urinated upon (although it's not clear ...maybe it was meant to be champagne). What are other people's interpretation/views on it. I may well be mistaken.

It's very clearly meant to ape golden shower porn/fetish and court controversy for commercial gain.

He's certainly not the first or best, and won't be the last or worst (probably). But it's a crying shame as he has such a terrific voice and people could be talking about his talent rather than his lack of taste.

While I personally don’t give a shit about him, and would really love to be able to mindlessly scroll through YouTube reels without hearing that fucking song ever again, I’m really pleased that my kids are old enough that I don’t have to explain that clip to them. Ew!

It's interesting because with my A level media class I've been studying gender identity ( Attitude magazine, it's on the syllabus). Today I showed them Sam Smith's video, Frankie goes to Hollywood and Relax, Cardi B and WAP . Sam's was not the most explicit by a long shot. Cardi Bs made them embarrassed the most!

He doesn't look well. Sadly all tassels and sparkle to hide a depleted talent.

As far as I'm aware none of the other artists that you have mentioned have been instrumental in removing the female category at the Brit Awards.

I hope this comes up in your considerations for your Media Class.

It's part of the reason this music video courts such attention.

Just watched it and I don't see anything particularly new or shocking about it - the only difference I see compared to similar "raunchy" videos by Madonna or Rihanna for example, is that this one has not been produced for the straight male gaze.

It's a lot gayer than most pop videos that talk about sex. That's all.

I remember growing up watching MTV with Madonna strutting about in latex with whips and a spreader bar, and that was almost 30 years ago.

I would have thought parents had had enough time to work out how to hide this stuff from their kids, or how to have an appropriate conversation about it since then.

It's like the late Mel Smith did a parody of a banned Madonna video in the 90's and someone just found it in the archives.

I like Sam's music, love his singing. I have nothing against how people want to dress. I wasn't quite prepared for Sam in the cream outfit, it's a bit sexy lol.

I had a gran who took me to Ibiza town aged 14 and we'd walk past all the drag acts, I'm a straight female and thought she was a legend. I have no negative feelings about that sort of thing. DH is the opposite. If he saw that video he'd be making pain noises. I'm going to carrying on watching it, I'm intrigued.

It is just unpleasant to watch. He has made himself look very unattractive. Almost a parody.

Just because you don't see "the spray" coming from a penis doesn't mean that's not what's being inferred. It's the same as if there was one shot of someone aiming a can of whipped cream and then another shot of someone getting a spray of thick white stuff over their face (please tell me I don't have to explain that one to you too 😅) - yes the "stated" interpretation is that the persons getting whipped cream to the face but there's obviously another element to it!

Media that has an "innocent" version of a sexual theme is very much a thing! While young kids who have never heard of golden showers/urine play probably wouldn't make the connection its the subliminal element/bringing kink into the mainstream people are concerned about. If people want to do things in private between consenting adults go for it, but making it mainstream has consequences- e.g. the "rough sex" especially choking from pork being used so often in murder cases.

I agree with the posters saying that all the fat shaming is unnecessary and irrelevant though.
