Sam Smith's New Music Video

There's been criticism in the press over the sexualisation/borderline pornography on the video. I've just watched it. It just seems pretty misogynistic to me. He appears to smash a wine glass onto a woman's head and then it looks as though the women are being urinated upon (although it's not clear ...maybe it was meant to be champagne). What are other people's interpretation/views on it. I may well be mistaken.

How odd. Normally messages from MNHQ are a different colour to other messages on my device, but this one is the same as all the other posters.

Funny. So if someone has a different opinion they can’t comment on a thread. Okay then.

I’m a little bit tired of saying this now but for the final time, as I said above, it’s fine to debate their actions and their clothes, but I think nasty comments about their weight and body hair are both inappropriate and also cheapens the arguments people are making about things like fetishising and violence.

I wouldn't get hung up on defending him. He is literally piss fetishing his kink into everyones' kids' timeline. And there is still only one of him.

LexMitior · 30/01/2023 21:44

I know it's supposed to be effortless sleaze chic but it looks overworked, overdone, and frankly, the kind of thing that makes people say they have work in the morning.

They look like they are seeking an audience. Mr Blobby could have arrived in a jewel encrusted jockstrap - the Noel's house party of eroticism.

Yes, it all feels rather sexless doesn't it? So try hard.

thisbathiscoldnow · 31/01/2023 08:25

There's absolutely nothing 'raunchy' about a chubby bloke in a sparkly shower cap wearing a nappy with plasters on his nipples.

I do however find the whole thing disturbing and agree that there should be some kind of age restriction on it, as with many music videos where half naked people are groping each other.

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 31/01/2023 08:47

Don’t you think this boils down to the hard fact that some people just have an innate style and sex appeal - and some just haven’t? And it doesn’t matter how many basques, suspenders and raunchy moves are thrown in, it’s really not going to happen. I’m also now stuck with the mental image of Mel Smith doing Vogue by Madonna - complete with conical bra - because of a brilliant post on here!

I find it rather ironic that some of these celebs think that being non binary (it was called androgynous in my day, but still the same btw) is something new and edgy. As a child of the 80s, Prince, David Bowie, Marilyn, Boy George, Annie Lennox, Steve Strange Et Al were far, far better and carried it off with aplomb.

SS just looks desperate.

Greenfairydust · 31/01/2023 08:49

''@CryInToYourCornflakesNicola · Yesterday 17:52
An awful lot of you need to go back and read what you put.
So many have misgendered Sam's self, you ought to be ashamed. Sam Smith is they/them. Do better.''

You assume this was done deliberately.

Not everyone is aware of/follows what specific pronouns celebrities are using.

I used ''he'' in my post because frankly Sam Smith has never really been on my radar as this is not really the type of music I follow. The last time I read anything about him was at the beginning of his career and he was definitely a ''he'' then.

I checked out the video yesterday when I saw the thread out of curiosity and used ''he''' when I commented on it.

I am now aware Sam Smith uses ''They/them''. Fair enough and I am very happy to use the correct pronouns from now on, but don't assume this is common knowledge or that everyone feels that they should use them and that should be respected too.

Intolerance works both ways.

As for his appearance: being overweight leads to health issues and it is concerning when someone's appearance changes quickly and radically, because there could be some physical or mental health issues behind the change. It is not ''body shaming'' to be concerned about health and well being.

And I am not heterosexual by the way before you suggest that I am disrespectful of his queer identity...I simply respect freedom of speech. If you are an artist you have to accept some people won't like what you put out.

😂 nice try. I haven’t seen ONE comment expressing concern over his body. Freedom of speech is fine, but own it. Don’t dress it up concern.

Greenfairydust · 31/01/2023 09:22

@NotAnotherBathBomb

I am referring to my own previous comment which mentioned his weight as a health concern, you can search for it on the thread.

I am not responsible for what other people posts.

I suggest you read people's comment correctly before jumping on someone who has not said anything remotely ''body shaming''.

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 31/01/2023 09:33

I can handle the fetish side even if he looks ridiculous in an undersized corset but smashing that bottle against the womans head is just disgusting. As others have said its been over-hyped for a mediocre songs....good job its called i am not here to make friends as dont think he will based on this performance ha ha

You should take your own advice then because nowhere did I accuse you of body shaming. Just faux concern.

Notaflippinclue · 31/01/2023 09:57

Sam who?

CryInToYourCornflakesNicola · 31/01/2023 10:12

No, I was doing satire, it never comes across as well in print as in my head. I did think my username and the fact I used Sam Smith and Sam's self instead of pronouns would give it away.

Sigh, I must try harder with the satire stuff.

waterfallswillfindyou · 31/01/2023 10:17

I wasn't sure about this video the first time I watched it.

Then I thought, actually, fair play to them. They must have a huge amount of body confidence to film those scenes in the corset and nipple covers - they look OK in some of the outfits, but not that one, and yet they're showing the world anyway. God, I wish I had that confidence. I don't. There is something impressive about somehow who clear doesn't give a shit what other people think of them.

I also thought they had an interesting voice, but then I thought I might hear autotuning? Or is that just a special effect? I've never heard Sam Smith sing before, so no idea if they sound like this normally, or if they're getting some help.

I've watched this video twice, and I thought the song itself was fairly generic pop, but after I stopped watching, on both ociolcasions, I immediately forgot what the song sounded like. So I think what's left really is the shock factor rather than the music itself, which is a shame.

The oversexualisation didn't offend me, but I did wince when I saw Sam Smith smash - did he smash a bottle of champagne on someone's head? It happens really quickly at the start. The second time he misses and everyone pulls a face, and I think that's fine, because no one gets hurt. But I don't think like that first staged tantrum - I find that kind of violence unnecessary.

ArtixLynx · 31/01/2023 10:26

yes they do, because as ever, its a bunch of bigots hiding behind their 'gender critical' bullshit.

apparently being gender criticial is a free pass to being rude.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 31/01/2023 10:28

SS just looks desperate.

This ^ really. After all the hype I was expecting to be shocked but it really does draw comparisons with the Smith and Jones (thanks to the PP who posted that videoGrin) and Two Ronnie sketches. Was he trying to be Miley Cyrus in the chandelier bit?

All a bit odd really, it looked like the Traitors castle and SS looked like an Austin Powers/Alan Cumming mash up draped across the car at the end.

Ah ok , as opposed to TRA's wanting Terfs to be decapitated?

Sam is being treated no worse than any other artist with a bad song and music video.

Why do you think he should get special treatment? He's pissed quite a few women off by removing the female category at the Brit awards then comes up with this tripe and we're not supposed to comment because.... 'be kind'?

No this shite doesn't wash anymore it's how we end up with nothing for women and rapists in women's prisons.

I would certainly advise them NOT to do this given the logistics

We end up with rapists in women's prisons by body shaming people we don't like?
