Sam Smith's New Music Video

There's been criticism in the press over the sexualisation/borderline pornography on the video. I've just watched it. It just seems pretty misogynistic to me. He appears to smash a wine glass onto a woman's head and then it looks as though the women are being urinated upon (although it's not clear ...maybe it was meant to be champagne). What are other people's interpretation/views on it. I may well be mistaken.

Whatever your opinions are of them, there are some truly nasty comments on here about their appearance which is just uncalled for.

Do you say the same things about Lizzo? She is widely considered as glamorous despite being overnight.

Sam Smith probably doesn’t give a shit if they aren’t attractive to the vast majority of mumsnet users. They probably attract other queer people. Some will be attracted to their confidence. Just because they’re not your cup of tea doesn’t mean you need to slate them. I mean, why are people talking about how hairy they are? Who gives a flying fuck about the fact they have body hair??

It is his piss fetish video that I have an issue with Folly. Hope that helps.

smileladiesplease · 30/01/2023 20:31

He's a huge bore and a very strange man but each to their own if he makes money off this rubbish well that's his prerogative.
I have always disliked drag or men dressing as women in a way out OTT way I find it distasteful snd deeply mysogynistic and more then anything just very sad

Yes that’s fine, I said the comments about their appearance were uncalled for.

RichardBarrister · 30/01/2023 20:42

There is nothing remotely healthy or pleasant about his video or appearance.

He is increasingly coming across as someone deeply unhappy and lost , with his ‘weeping on the steps’ video during lockdown to his alleged threatening to sack staff who don’t refer to him as ‘they’.

His performance on Graham Norton’s show, pulling down his top to reveal moobs with nipple pasties was just unpleasant. I hope he decides to take some time out to get away from the madness of the music industry.

Folly. That's a guy with a piss fetish.

SequinsandStilettos · 30/01/2023 20:44

It reminded me of this but this has not aged well.

.Sarah Michelle Geller looked uncomfortable sitting next to Sam while he was talking about the video. It was just urgh

Yes, but why does that mean we have to rip their appearance to shreds?

Question and debate the video, the clothes, their opinions and actions. But why on earth are we tearing a person’s appearance to shreds? It really isn’t necessary and weakens the other points being made about violence, fetishes etc.

I just think the thread shouldn’t focus on a person’s appearance. Should fat hairy people not be allowed to have careers in entertainment? Should they hide their bodies in case other people are repulsed?

An awful lot of you need to go back and read what you put.
So many have misgendered Sam's self, you ought to be ashamed. Sam Smith is they/them.

Do better.

I'm sorry I misgendered a man. It was the frock.

It's satire. I got caught too. Look at the username

SequinsandStilettos · 30/01/2023 21:18

I just watched him on Graham Norton and he came over quite well - able to take a ribbing from Rob Beckett.
I am plus size myself. I loved Dietland and I watched Shrill. Brendan Fraser has just been Oscar nominated wearing a fat suit in The Whale (I shall try to reserve judgement til I have seen it). I am all too aware of the focus on looks but I also agree that the body positivity movement can go too far the other way.
Sam has found a vehicle for dealing with his self-image and esteem. He has been friendzoned a lot allegedly. Given some members of the gay community like hirsute (bears) and bigger blokes (chubby chasing), I am sure he will find someone now he is putting himself out there.
Whether shaking moobs with heart pasties is shocking or not - not really, but nor is it necessary. Like Madge on Jimmy Fallon's desk or when Miley kept sticking her tongue out, it comes over as attention-seeking rather than art.
But I'm not the demographic.
If Madge's antics are calling out ageism and Sam's are calling out sizeist trolls, the message is being lost a little in translation.
I sound like a prude with put 'em away but less is sometimes more. As for body positivity, it is all well and good until you end up with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease which iirc George Michael died from.

Love it or hate it, whatever, but I don't I understand the 'wouldn't show it to/not appropriate for my child'

Um no, why would it be? The majority of mainstream music is aimed at adults, what a weird take Confused

It’s not his appearance it’s his womanface.

Eddie Izzard can bugger off too.

LexMitior · 30/01/2023 21:44

I know it's supposed to be effortless sleaze chic but it looks overworked, overdone, and frankly, the kind of thing that makes people say they have work in the morning.

They look like they are seeking an audience. Mr Blobby could have arrived in a jewel encrusted jockstrap - the Noel's house party of eroticism.

Well, if he dresses like a complete and utter fetishist and opening up kids to the joys of drinking someone else's piss, then why shouldn't people debate what he is doing?

And there's only one of him. Thankfully.

Just smacks of desperation

Sam Smith had an unusual voice has recorded popular songs and doesn’t really need to go down this road of being deliberately shocking

Yeah SS was much cooler before he went down the sleazy route. The new video is not very sexy - not because of how SS looks but the whole thing is just way too OTT to actually be sexy.

The Unholy song was problematic too. Who wants to listen to songs about a husband cheating with hookers or whatever it was Confused was it meant to be sexy too?!

smileladiesplease · 30/01/2023 23:21

Sam smith is not a plural he's one man

You can't misgender a man with a penis! He's a man.

Honestly it's maddness!

Greenfairydust · 30/01/2023 19:08

I just watched it to see what all the fuss is about...

  • the song is the most shocking in this, in term how bad it is! truly bland and instantly forgettable
  • the video I found quite tedious as well. I don't find it shocking, just a big mess trying a bit too hard to shock.

There is nothing to be really worked up about I would say.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Madonna (Erotica album period) did it all, and better, before.

I actually quite liked ''Unholy'' video and song, found it quite catchy but this one, nope.

His weight gain is rather concerning. I did not even recognise him and I hope he manages to address that. I don't think it is ''body shaming'' to say that this is not healthy.

I'm so with you on those 2 points. The song is sooo bad!
And the video is... yawn.

Worse thing about it is despite all the positivity/sexy new me message Sam Smith looks very uncomfortable throughout.
It's not sexy, it's not edgy, it's just all a little embarrassing.

I rewatched the video with my 16 year old and she couldn't even sit through the whole thing.
Song- terrible. Video-meh.

I’m a little bit tired of saying this now but for the final time, as I said above, it’s fine to debate their actions and their clothes, but I think nasty comments about their weight and body hair are both inappropriate and also cheapens the arguments people are making about things like fetishising and violence.

How odd. Normally messages from MNHQ are a different colour to other messages on my device, but this one is the same as all the other posters.
