Why do people keep voting the tortes in again and again

Thomasina79 · 29/01/2023 18:34

Not wanting an argument, just wondering. Another Tory has been dismissed for dishonesty and day after day we hear of stories about people having to choose between heating and eating. Surely people realise we need a change of government? The NHS and other support services such as teachers are on strike. What next?

The polls indicate they’re doing quite well @radrado. The reason the last election was lost can be summed up in two words - Jeremy Corbyn. Even I couldn’t vote for a Corbyn government. Labour’s certainly listening to big business, the chairman of Tesco says a Labour government would be better for business than the current one. That’s huge.

What’s the problem with Jeremy Corbyn?

Clarabell77 · 06/02/2023 18:45

Some have genuine reasons (usually something to do with having lots of money to stash away or not liking people with brown skin) but a lot of people do it because they fall for the Tory-controlled media and their lies and spin.

radrado · 06/02/2023 18:49

@Clarabell77 SNP are terrible. Awful for Scotland. I could weep thinking about it. The division and hatred they’ve stoked. The education system, their ineptitude- ferry scandal, Edinburgh trams, Scottish Parliament, Duffy £100k loan from Sturgeon’s husband, Named Person etc… Their disdain for women. Rapists in women’s prisons. The lies and doubling down. The green light to threats and SNP thugs to intimidate. Awful. Even my nationalist friends don’t like them!

radrado · 06/02/2023 18:50

Dodgy not Duffy!

What utter nonsense. And ”the Scottish Parliament” - wtf.

Clavinova · 06/02/2023 19:23

Andrew Neil asking Grant Shapps if
"We've Made Britain Poorer Than Slovenia!"
will be a vote winning slogan for the Tories at the next GE

At the time of the original comparison (September 2022 - "On present trends, the average Slovenian household will be better off than its British counterpart by 2024...") - GDP growth in Slovenia was outperforming the rest of the EU;

According to the latest Eurostat report published in August, the annual GDP growth of the Slovenian economy reached 8.3 percent. That’s the highest economic growth in the second quarter of 2022 among the 27 EU members.

radrado · 06/02/2023 19:43

How can you dismiss all of those concerns as nonsense! I am a proud Scot but the SNP are not doing a good job. You are blind if you think they are. The dismissive attitude to any criticism is typical of SNP sadly.

radrado · 06/02/2023 19:45

That’s to @Clarabell77

Xenia · 06/02/2023 20:05

"Same. It's funny how they see the parties as evil (Tories) and good (Labour). Politics is never that simple. I'm respectful of people's choice to vote Labour yet this respect is rarely reciprocated in the other direction."
Yes, Labour does need to consider why it does not respect the many people who vote Conservative never mind the floating voters. Apparently Labour has to convince white men of 50 who drove a mondeo car to vote labour to tip the balance this time...ah it was Mondeo man last time. Now it is middle aged mortgage man - I just checked www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11569513/Move-Mondeo-Man-Worcester-Woman-Labour-targeting-middle-aged-mortgage-man.html

Blossomtoes · 06/02/2023 20:06

Oh @Xenia! The Daily Mail?

Florenz · 06/02/2023 20:16

People who spend their lives waiting for the government to save them are doomed to die disappointed.

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/02/2023 20:18

It's not that people think in terms of evil (Tories) and good (Labour). It's that people can see that the corrupt, incompetent Tory party have broke the country and that their neighbour's dog would probably be an improvement.

Blossomtoes · 06/02/2023 20:19

And the relevance of that little gem is?

CrimsonPostBox · 06/02/2023 20:24

Because Labour don't believe in anything.

Blossomtoes · 06/02/2023 20:31

CrimsonPostBox · 06/02/2023 20:24

Because Labour don't believe in anything.

Jesus wept. Just when you think the thread has reached the lowest depths.

Florenz · 06/02/2023 20:46

Because while Labour may improve things slight, poor people will still be poor, there will still be crime etc etc. And the Tories will get back in after a few years.

radrado · 06/02/2023 20:47

@Blossomtoes Why do you think it’s reached the “lowest depths?” What was said beforehand? Yes I agree the Labour “don’t believe in anything” is weird but before? As far as I’m concerned we’re having an interesting discussion. You’re the one being rude about other people’s democratic right to vote for whom they choose. You and @Clarabell77 are being very condescending . Try being less judgmental and listen instead of preaching. The baddies/goodies routine is tedious and insulting.

Blossomtoes · 06/02/2023 21:00

I’m not being in the least rude. I’m happy to listen to anything worth listening to. Sadly there isn’t much of it on this thread.

MajorCarolDanvers · 06/02/2023 21:01

@Clarabell77

If you don’t like “nationalism” why on earth would you vote Tory?

The SNP are nationalists and the Tories are unionists. If you live in Scotland and are not a nationalist then you vote for the unionist parties - Labour, Tory or Libdem. Whichever locally has the best chance of beating the SNP.

And in what way do you think the SNP are worse than the tories?

Almost every way. In nearly every league table Scotland performs worse than the rest of the UK plus we get to pay higher taxes for the privilege

ALongHardWinter · 06/02/2023 21:03

At first glance,I thought your thread title said 'Why do people keep voting the torties in again and again?' .I thought this thread was going to be about tortoise shell cats 😂

Elvira2000 · 06/02/2023 21:17

There is no true democracy in the uk. One of pillars of democracy is a free press. There is a free press in the respect that is not government controlled. But it 's majority right wing reflecting the interests of it's foreign- based owners.

Also civics is not taught at school. And the curriculum does not prompt critical thinking skills. Also in times of uncertainty people vote to the right, who cynically use this to make things worse. Vicious circle. Turkies voting for Christmas.

After Boris and Truss, i have no idea of how people can say the opposition would have made things worse! Just how?!

verdantverdure · 06/02/2023 21:24

I think some people prefer being lied to, to hearing about reality.

When certain Tories say anything I immediately think it's obvious nonsense but some people seem to lap it up.

When the far right Libertarian think tanks push out their whataboutery like:

"Never mind their low wages, and the fact that you might need them to save your life they've got PENSIONS!!!"

via their talking heads and pundits I think nobody will be taken in by such transparent tactics...

When the Brexit promises videos were being shown on prime time tv I thought nobody would fall for that.

twitter.com/bestforbritain/status/1621144666505887744?s=12

But people do, and that's why the Tories have kept getting back in.

Florenz · 06/02/2023 21:26

There's left wing papers and no restrictions on who is allowed to publish a newspaper. You can't make people buy a newspaper that they don't want to read. The left just needs to figure out how to publish left leaning news in a way that entertains as well as informs.

radrado · 06/02/2023 21:38

@Blossomtoes you make me laugh. “I’m not rude” then proceed to be very rude.

It’s a shame you and the others on this post can’t see that the condescension and lack of actually trying to understand people’s points of view is what turns voters off Labour and onto Tories.

I understand your frustration as the country is in a mess, but insulting potential swing voters isn’t the way forward.
