Why do people keep voting the tortes in again and again

Thomasina79 · 29/01/2023 18:34

Not wanting an argument, just wondering. Another Tory has been dismissed for dishonesty and day after day we hear of stories about people having to choose between heating and eating. Surely people realise we need a change of government? The NHS and other support services such as teachers are on strike. What next?

I don't think any objective observer would look around at our country currently and conclude that the Tories are good for our country.

Andrew Neil asking Grant Shapps if

"We've Made Britain Poorer Than Slovenia!"

will be a vote winning slogan for the Tories at the next GE.

Shapps really drew the short straw getting the media round yesterday.

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/02/2023 13:36

Last night's Andrew Neil show was great.Grin

RealeyesRealizeReallies · 06/02/2023 13:55

Because the type of person who would vote for those cretins is not the type of person to admit that they may have voted, unwisely.

So, they will carry on the shit show; preaching that visiting food banks is good for the soul while secretly worrying about how they are going to feed their family. But let's keep up appearances!

They also like to think they are head and shoulders above the 'plebs', whereas, in reality, they are looked down upon.

Oh, and they've still got the immigration card to use at their disposal. Only, it's wearing a bit thin, now..

Notaflippinclue · 06/02/2023 14:05

Depends if you think more than half the country are poor and failing, whether they work hard or not, or are more than half the country working hard and doing ok hence they vote for the status quo.

This thread in a sense is the reason Labour have not won since 2005 - they cannot imagine why the country would want to vote for better or different policies because Labour thinks it is right.

Has Labour really changed and humbly sat at the feet of Tory voters to learn why they don't vote Labour or does it sit high and mightily lecturing ordinary people about what they ought to believe?

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/02/2023 16:25

This thread lists the reasons why the Conservatives won't win the next election and may never win one again.

Is Mark Francois indisposed?

radrado · 06/02/2023 17:23

You’re so right @Xenia I’m actually left leaning but I can’t bear the Labour lot who don’t LISTEN but instead TELL us what we ought to believe. The arrogance.

Diverging · 06/02/2023 17:29

Because we have a first past the post system and a powerful but large enough minority of the population that want to maintain their wealth and power (or aspire to it).

Also love a chocolate torte.

The entire point of a democratic system is that you have different political parties with different policies. Why on earth would Labour pander to Tory voters in the hope they might change their minds? The whole point is that they’re different and appeal to different voters.

There’s no way on this planet that @Xenia and I would ever vote for the same party. We’re at opposite ends of the political spectrum. My party doesn’t want her vote and hers doesn’t want mine. Both are in competition for voters who might go either way. It’s hardly arrogance to state your beliefs.

I’ve found it unbearable over time too. A kind of superiority and arrogance. It’s strange to be at odds when naturally being liberal minded was the default. I think the left has shifted in some ways from liberal thinking to more authoritarian though.

I recently heard someone speaking on this so maybe a current trend.

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/02/2023 17:42

I wish people would stop assuming that everyone critical of the Tories is a Labour supporter. Most of the country were critical of the Conservatives, then lots of Conservative voters became critical of them.🤭

Essexgirlupnorth · 06/02/2023 17:47

There is probably more people that are registered to vote and don't vote at all that vote Tory.

We really need proportional representation rather than first past the post but the Stories would never bring it in as it wouldn't benefit them.

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/02/2023 16:25

For me it does.

But then it's difficult for me to imagine that anyone.
looks around at the state of our country at the moment and thinks "Well that other lot, under whom almost everything was better than it is now, would be worse."

But I know some people will. I just think they're a dying breed.

There's plenty of time for things to get even worse before t'next election.

The consequences of Conservative policies are really coming home to roost. People won't forget if they lost someone for want of ambulance or they couldn't afford an extra £400 a month for their mortgage on top of the extra money on energy and food.

And the Tories want to take away our human our rights next.

What could go wrong?!

unsureatthispoint · 06/02/2023 17:50

Essexgirl if Labour get in do you think they will introduce it?

radrado · 06/02/2023 18:23

You’ve just demonstrated my point nicely @Blossomtoes I am not a Tory but in fact left leaning and have previously voted Labour. The current lot do not listen. Reread my post, you’re not listening either. Labour need to reflect on why they’ve not won an election for nearly 20 years! They are arrogant and many seem to actually look down on the public. They are determined they’re right. Do they not want to win? If they do then they should start listening. It’s like Hillary Clinton and the “deplorables” all over again!

Blossomtoes · 06/02/2023 18:31

The polls indicate they’re doing quite well @radrado. The reason the last election was lost can be summed up in two words - Jeremy Corbyn. Even I couldn’t vote for a Corbyn government. Labour’s certainly listening to big business, the chairman of Tesco says a Labour government would be better for business than the current one. That’s huge.

radrado · 06/02/2023 18:34

We’ll see @Blossomtoes

If they could just listen to the little people (not just big business), show a bit of leadership around women’s issues and less misogyny I would vote for them like a shot.

dew141 · 06/02/2023 18:38

You’re so right @Xenia I’m actually left leaning but I can’t bear the Labour lot who don’t LISTEN but instead TELL us what we ought to believe. The arrogance.

Same. It's funny how they see the parties as evil (Tories) and good (Labour). Politics is never that simple. I'm respectful of people's choice to vote Labour yet this respect is rarely reciprocated in the other direction.

Which I know will trigger another wave of evil Tories/saviour Labour comments...

Clarabell77 · 06/02/2023 18:39

MajorCarolDanvers · 29/01/2023 18:45

I held my nose and voted Tory in 2019

Because Corbyn was actually worse the BJ
Because Sturgeon and Nationalism are actually worse the Tories.

However it looks like Starmer can win so I will vote Labour at the next election

If you don’t like “nationalism” why on earth would you vote Tory?

And in what way do you think the SNP are worse than the tories?
