Nuts on school trip abroad

Ellie09ellie · 27/01/2023 17:41

My daughter is due to go on a school trip abroad in the next week. She is 14. We have just had a message to say no buts on the coach as a child has an airborne allergy. They are also having to ask the hotel to become nut free for the duration of their stay. Is this actually possible or even reasonable given that it's a hotel? My daughter is vegetarian and a lot of her food has nuts in it. Is it unreasonable to expect that after paying quite a bit of money that she gets to eat decent food and not live of chips for a week? I get that it's an allergy that could kill but surely the parents weighed up the issues before sending their child on a trip with 50 other children to a foreign country? Has anyone else been in this position? Thank you

So should the child be lock up at home because some kids can’t cope without eating nuts for a few days.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/01/2023 17:43

Is it reasonable that another kid dies as your DD likes nuts?

SheepSaysBaa · 27/01/2023 17:43

Jesus Christ, how selfish! There is plenty of veggie food without nuts.

HewasH2O · 27/01/2023 17:43

Reverse this. If your DD had a nut allergy, would you be happy if other parents suggested that she should be excluded from an educational trip overseas because they wanted their own child to have the option of eating peanut butter?

LIZS · 27/01/2023 17:44

Surely there are non nut based dishes she can be served,

LCforlife · 27/01/2023 17:45

There's plenty of veggie food without nuts in. If her diet is so limited that she'll have to live on chips then maybe consider if it's ok to send her on the trip.

RunningFromInsanity · 27/01/2023 17:45

There are hundreds of types of food that your DD can eat, there is one singular food type that could kill someone else’s DC.

It's only a few days, why can't your DD take some nut free vegetarian snacks, like fruit roll ups and oat bars, apples, bean based snacks like edamame beans with seasoning.

Wolfiefan · 27/01/2023 17:45

Not eating nuts doesn’t mean she will be eating chips.
Eating nuts means a child dies.

Completely reasonable to have a nut free trip. I've been on a flight where were asked not to consume nuts on board due to a very serious allergy. Honestly why would you risk someone's life?

UmmmBopDeeDooWhop · 27/01/2023 17:45

My dd is anaphylactic to peanuts and she's never gone to a school where nuts were banned. However when she went to Belgium on a school trip her friend did have an anaphylactic reaction to cashew nuts and frankly it was an absolute nightmare for everyone involved.

The child ended up in hospital and two members of staff had to go too and then there wasn't enough staff to do the activities the next day. The parents had to fly to somewhere in France then hire a car to get to their child.

It's just about reducing the risks for everyone involved.

LlynTegid · 27/01/2023 17:46

Assuming the school knew about this a long time ago, you should have been told before paying anything. You and other parents would have then had a choice to make based on full knowledge. I think a reasonable request though, but should not be something akin to a short notice ultimatum.

Orangello · 27/01/2023 17:46

I call reverse. There's plenty of vegetarian food without nuts!

YABU.

Your child's preference to eat nuts does not override the other child's safety.

Mumdiva99 · 27/01/2023 17:46

It's not just to protect the child....but also to protect the staff who are taking the children. If some thing happened to a child in their care not only would they feel awful but could be in trouble. If they are no longer comfortable taking children away they can just say no......usually its done on goodwill.....

I'm sure your daughter can either other protein for a week.....cheese, beans, pulses, tofu, eggs etc

UmmmBopDeeDooWhop · 27/01/2023 17:47

Also, my child didn't develop her allergy until she was older. So there is plenty of chance for yours to develop one too! 🥜

Zooeyzo · 27/01/2023 17:49

Loads of vegetarian food is nut free I'm from a vegetarian family and culture. You sound very entitled.

Beginningless · 27/01/2023 17:50

I can see that it’s a slight inconvenience for your child but I think you are being very selfish. Risk of death is far more important than not being able to eat something for a week. Your child can eat pulses, lentils etc for protein if they wish.

SnowyPetals · 27/01/2023 17:50

I think you have to be relaxed about the fact that your child may not eat a balanced diet while on a school trip, whatever their preferences or requirements. Often food is presented or cooked differently etc and a week of junk food won't harm them anyway. So the no nuts really won't make much difference.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 27/01/2023 17:50

Since when have nuts or chips been the only alternatives for vegetarians? Jeez just be grateful you're not the parent having to try and let a child with a potentially deadly nut allergy lead a normal life.

tiggergoesbounce · 27/01/2023 17:51

How long have you been veggie.
It sounds like not very long if you think your DDs choices of food are nuts or chips for her diet.

Flip it on its head. Is it fair that a hotel chef has to ensure it amends/creates a menu for your DD with a vegetarian option on it because that's how you choose to raise her? It's not an allergy. it's a belief/choice, i mean, it's not like she will die, so throw a bit of meat in. Why not 🙄🙄

FurAndFeathers · 27/01/2023 17:51

What a shame that literally no nut-based vegetarian food exists apart from chips!

oh no actually that’s not right is it?

SoupDragon · 27/01/2023 17:51

I get that it's an allergy that could kill

well, clearly you don't!

there are lots of alternatives your DD could eat that don't risk killing a classmate.

tiggergoesbounce · 27/01/2023 17:52

For the record if no one could tell. Of course, i think hotels should have veggie options, im just trying to highlight a point.
