Nuts on school trip abroad

Ellie09ellie · 27/01/2023 17:41

My daughter is due to go on a school trip abroad in the next week. She is 14. We have just had a message to say no buts on the coach as a child has an airborne allergy. They are also having to ask the hotel to become nut free for the duration of their stay. Is this actually possible or even reasonable given that it's a hotel? My daughter is vegetarian and a lot of her food has nuts in it. Is it unreasonable to expect that after paying quite a bit of money that she gets to eat decent food and not live of chips for a week? I get that it's an allergy that could kill but surely the parents weighed up the issues before sending their child on a trip with 50 other children to a foreign country? Has anyone else been in this position? Thank you

As a parent of a child with allergies (including but not limited to nuts) the responses to this thread are a relief!

Op it's really scary for parents of children with allergies and very tempting to lock them up at home but we have to take risks by letting them do things otherwise they will never learn independence. The compassion of people who, like the people on this thread, are willing to put up with inconveniences like the No Nuts rule really make life so much easier for families like mine. Allergy parents know our kids can be an inconvenience but are grateful to those who put up with us with good grace.

Nuts and chips is not as shit a diet as just chips but it’s still terrible. if you are a really fussy eater then it’s part of life that when you at catered events then you will have very limited options. Can your dd not be persuaded to eat other food at all?

My ds was in a school trip to France where one child became unwell and needed to go to hospital. It was nothing to do with food but like a pp said, it was a pita for everyone. I can’t imagine how much worse it would be if a child died.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/01/2023 18:10

I'm veggie and used to work with a person with an airborne nut allergy. I've seen how quickly he reacted by sitting at a desk where the previous occupant had eaten peanuts, and the paramedics and ambulance that ensued.

I really wouldn't begrudge not eating nuts for a few days if travelling with someone with a nut allergy. In my experience, French cuisine is very meat-and-fish heavy, but there's a lot of bread and cheese.

Also, my child didn't develop her allergy until she was older. So there is plenty of chance for yours to develop one too! 🥜

This happened to my sister. She developed a load of very severe allergies in her 30s and was hospitalised with anaphylaxis for foods she’d eaten hundreds of times before (including nuts).

Why would she have to live off chips for the week?

I've been a veggie for over 30 years and have a lifelong nut allergy. I eat a great diet that doesn't involve nuts.

I also have a son who has a severe nut allergy. I'd be delighted (not) if one of his friends parents was narked about her child having to adapt her diet to keep him alive...

So should the child be lock up at home because some kids can’t cope without eating nuts for a few days.

How could they regulate airborne peanut if they are out and about doing an activity or something though?

Sirzy · 27/01/2023 18:12

Airborne allergies are a nightmare to manage. My sister has an airborne allergy to peanuts and in an enclosed space like a coach could be fatal

DeliberatelyObtuse · 27/01/2023 18:12

Why on earth is it nuts or chips?

Does she not eat anything else?

toastofthetown · 27/01/2023 18:14

I'm vegetarian and my diet isn't nuts and chips.

Georgyporky · 27/01/2023 18:14

I can't understand why this is a problem now ?
Surely the school has been nut-free because of the child with the allergy?

I really feel for you, there’s a child with a severe nut allergy at my child’s school and it’s unbelievable how often they have to issue reminders that it’s nut free school. It must be so stressful.

Dartmoorcheffy · 27/01/2023 18:17

This has to be a reverse or a wind up

LeapingCat · 27/01/2023 18:17

Hahaha, as a vegetarian who’s spent plenty of time in France your dd will be eating a very limited damage of stuff anyway. I’ve never been given anything with nuts in. Salad, chips, omelette. She’ll survive.

Puffy123 · 27/01/2023 18:18

Both my children were vegetarian at school (now vegan) and are allergic to nuts and sesame.

Vegetarians can eat perfectly well without nuts.

helpfulperson · 27/01/2023 18:20

Nut free school are not recommended. There is significant proof that this leads to complacency by the person with the allergy because they are used to the world being nut free. Which then leads to more episodes outside school especially as they grow up.

LynetteScavo · 27/01/2023 18:20

YABU

I think your DD can eat nothing but chips for an entire week to ensure another child doesn't die while on a school trip.

Of course, your DD will eat lots of things other than chips, because lots and lots of delicious, wholesome meals don't contain nuts.

I'm thinking this is a reverse.

LeCarre · 27/01/2023 18:21

Oh no! However will your poor precious child cope without nuts for a week 😱😱😱 whatever will she do, I can’t believe they’re infringing her autonomy like that just to save someone’s life.

Hey maybe you could use this trip to teach your child a lesson about caring for others.

mytummyisrumbling · 27/01/2023 18:22

So you've paid a lot of money for your child to go on holiday with the school and you're annoyed that you don't want to go along with a simple exclusion of one food to stop someone dying!!!!!

How disgusting are you?

If the hotel is catering for a nut allergy, they will be making vegetarian and vegan meals without nuts.

We are all vegan and I can't remember the last time we ate nuts! There are so many other things you can eat.

I'm sorry but you're completely selfish!

I don’t think OP is qualified to teach that lesson

The coach is fair enough as it’s an enclosed and close environment. Asking the hotel to be nut free is slightly bizarre though and I can’t see that it would happen. Is your daughter allowed out for food for a better choice?

AnorLondo · 27/01/2023 18:23

Is this a reverse? You can't be that entitled surely.

onlyoneoftheregimentinstep · 27/01/2023 18:23

Both my adult DDs have nut allergies and are vegetarian - they eat perfectly healthily. I'm grateful they never had to put up with such extraordinary selfishness.

thestealthwee · 27/01/2023 18:24

Well being vegetarian is a choice

Having a nut allergy isn't

Is being vegetarian even her choice or one you've instilled in her??

1FootInTheRave · 27/01/2023 18:27

Yabu and selfish.

Wondering how feasible it is for the hotel to be nut free though 🤔
