Nuts on school trip abroad

Ellie09ellie · 27/01/2023 17:41

My daughter is due to go on a school trip abroad in the next week. She is 14. We have just had a message to say no buts on the coach as a child has an airborne allergy. They are also having to ask the hotel to become nut free for the duration of their stay. Is this actually possible or even reasonable given that it's a hotel? My daughter is vegetarian and a lot of her food has nuts in it. Is it unreasonable to expect that after paying quite a bit of money that she gets to eat decent food and not live of chips for a week? I get that it's an allergy that could kill but surely the parents weighed up the issues before sending their child on a trip with 50 other children to a foreign country? Has anyone else been in this position? Thank you

I didn't know nuts were such a vital ingredient to having a good holiday. I must at once go to a travel agents and insist they book me a holiday filled with nuts, all the nuts.

Fascinating how people like @Ellie09ellie are happy to consign a child with allergies to a lifetime locked away rather than their child be minimally and briefly inconvenienced.

IsItThough · 27/01/2023 20:07

I 100% expect OPS DD doesn't care and is happy with chips (and you know, eggs, cheese, vegetables and other staple foods). The OP (if not a reverse) is getting themselves generally het up because they are nervous as hell about their child going on the trip and this is just a way for their anxiety about it.

LOL at volunteering/nuts comment.

whiteroseredrose · 27/01/2023 20:09

It is part and parcel of being vegetarian to have very limited meals abroad. DS went on Spanish exchange and ate plain boiled spinach for every meal apparently. When I went on a school ski trip I had pasta with butter every day. France doesn't seem.to get it at all and just scrapes the meat off.

I doubt the hotel abroad would have been particularly imaginative with vegetarian meals anyway, and very unlikely to have used nuts.

saleorbouy · 27/01/2023 20:11

I'd be surprised if the child is has an allergy to all types of nuts. It's a bit like saying no fruit because someone is allergic to kiwi fruit. Ask the school to be more specific,if it's a peanut allergy then your children could eat other nuts.
Have the school asked the ferry to be nut free too?

It's a school trip.

Surely the whole point is to reject foreign food as weird, enjoy being without your parents telling you what to eat, and live entirely on chips and crisps for the duration?

This. She will eat chips all week even if nuts were an option.

Annoyedfood · 27/01/2023 20:31

If this is genuine then it’s one of the most selfish posts I’ve ever read on here.

Put yourself in the shoes of the parents who are sending off their daughter knowing she has a potentially deadly condition but don’t want her to feel excluded from her peers.

AmyDudley · 27/01/2023 20:33

Is your DD a squirrel ?

Folkishgal · 27/01/2023 20:36

Jesus Christ. As someone with a sibling who has a SEVERE peanut allergy people like you give me the fear.

Your daughter will be fine, Christ.

Nevermind31 · 27/01/2023 20:36

Ah, maybe she can eat meat for these few days, surely you would have considered that no nuts might be served on school trip abroad?
don’t like that? How do you feel the parents of the allergic child feel?

diaryofadyslexic · 27/01/2023 20:38

Are you one of those people who didn't wear a face during Covid because it was an inconvenience to you? Sod the rest of us!

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/01/2023 20:43

How can this be real? If there is a child with a severe nut allergy in your DD's school surely you would know about it already.

ittakes2 · 27/01/2023 20:44

She won't die from not eating nuts for a few days but the other child might. Give your head a wobble.

shmivorytower · 27/01/2023 20:48

@MisschiefMaker i could not agree more (fellow allergy parent here!)

DDivaStar · 27/01/2023 20:50

Why is the choice vegetarian food with nuts or chips ? Its perfectly possible to make good vegetarian food without nuts.

QueSyrahSyrah · 27/01/2023 20:53

Please god let this be a reverse. Just when you think people can't get more ridiculously selfish, someone comes along to knock it out of the park.

adomizo · 27/01/2023 20:54

Yep I think you get the idea....we all think you are unreasonable. You can't seriously suggest it's worth taking the risk for the child in question so yours can have some cashews. Yes some people are allergic to all nuts ...its not possible to isolate to a particular nut out. Your DD will just have to manage.

Vallmo47 · 27/01/2023 20:56

FUCKING HELL.
This is the worst post I have ever read on here. A kid should be locked up so your kid can eat nuts on holiday. A kid could die because of it. I agree with posters who say this must be a reverse but it is so disgusting I had to comment. It’s not okay for this to be real but it’s not okay to fabricate something so shitty, either.

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/01/2023 20:58

And this goady thread is getting the desired reaction! What a surprise Hmm.

Swiftswatch · 27/01/2023 20:59

So your poor wee DC can’t possibly be expected to forgo nuts for a week but the child with an allergy shouldn’t be allowed to ever go on holiday?
Fuck me I didn’t realise people as selfish as you actually exist in the world.
Your daughter will be fine without nuts for 1 week. There are all sorts of veggie food without nuts.
If she can’t possibly go a week without eating a nut maybe she’s the one who should stay home.

WeWereInParis · 27/01/2023 20:59

You are being extremely unreasonable.

I'm surprised the hotel is willing to do it though. DH has a severe nut allergy and most restaurants have a caveat on their allergy menus, even if they don't have nuts in the kitchen, that they can't absolutely guarantee anything.

Hahah brilliant response!!!

(And I'm an annoying vegan)

londonrach · 27/01/2023 21:01

What a horrible person you are. A child could die so your child can eat nuts. Yabu and tbh I'm shocked . Nasty person and yes I have someone in my family who could die due to nasty people like you.

lunar1 · 27/01/2023 21:02

If your child will only eat nuts or chips then residential trips probably aren't the best idea.

The other child should definitely be locked in their home for life so your dd can eat nuts wherever she wants.

Greenraincoat12 · 27/01/2023 21:03

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/01/2023 17:43

Is it reasonable that another kid dies as your DD likes nuts?

My child has an anaphylactic nut allergy. OP you didn't come across very well in your post. My DD is going abroad this year with school. I wouldn't let her go last year because I was worried about her allergy but this year she will be going. I'm not stopping her living her life. I'm hoping no ignorant parents will be objecting to my DD's presence on the trip.
