What can be done for low blood pressure? What causes it?

It definitely felt more like years ago when I had. X section they say...you may feel unwell when we do blah that would be low blood pressure and tell us and we will adjust X.

Definitely felt more that sort of thing than room swaying dizzy

Lots of things can cause low blood pressure OP.

Pregnancy, body temperature, lots and lots of illnesses and conditions.

Sometimes it can be unexplained. My grandmother in her late 70’s has drops of her blood pressure and faints. She’s had allsorts of tests, blood work, scans etc and they can’t figure out why she has sudden drops.

Her advice (like it should be for all elderly people) is to move slowly, don’t stand up or sit down too quickly and monitor it with an at-home monitor.

Hopefully you get through to 111 and feel more yourself soon.

I’m so confused by OP’s posts. They don’t really make sense, though I appreciate you’re not well. Did you already go to A&E or not? If so, what happened?

I agree. Anxiety as they keep picking up things people have said and running with them. Which means this thread won’t help

LIZS · 26/01/2023 18:40

If you told gp reception it was an emergency they would fit you in, with a nurse if no gp available. Hopefully 111 will arrange an ooh appointment. Feeling faint can be caused by poor hydration or not eating, infection, reaction to pain or stress, low blood pressure, reaction to allergen or overheating et al. You won't suddenly be diabetic to the extent it affects your consciousness, unless you ignored other warning signs and your other symptoms sound more anxiety related.

DietCock · 26/01/2023 18:41

If I were you, OP, I'd put your phone away and try to have a sleep. It's not clear whether you do or don't want there to be anything wrong with you, and I don't think this thread is helping. FWIW, I've never heard of anyone "nearly fainting" and being diagnosed with sudden-onset diabetes as a result.

If you don't feel any better by Monday, get on the phone to your GP.

I had a lump on my neck once that turned out to be a build up of lactic acid. My friend (a beauty therapist) diagnosed it and massaged it out. It was actually quite big so I had been worried. So don’t panic OP not all lumps and bumps are sinister.

Lactic acid is something that can form into a ‘lump’ it’s a chemical.

DestinysGrandchild · 26/01/2023 18:43

In the nicest possible way, if you can take your time to post and reply on Mumsnet you don't need to go to a&e. Ring 111 for advice if you're worried and they will tell you what's best. If you've been feeling crappy all week, it's probably still not an emergency as if it was anything too serious, it probably would have happened already.

I hope you feel better soon.

youshouldnthaveasked · 26/01/2023 18:43

It’s not an emergency. I’d ring 111

NewBootsAndRanty · 26/01/2023 18:43

If you've undiagnosed t2 diabetes then you're unlikely to get hypos unless you're taking certain diabetes medications.

itswednesdayy · 26/01/2023 18:43

This happened to me 10 years ago so I can’t really remember what happened.

I went downstairs after waking up, felt a bit faint. It was a hot day, and I had a sudden urge to lay down on the tiles in the kitchen as they were cold. I passed out but came round after a few minutes. Nothing came out of and it hasn’t happened since. I just attributed it to the weather and went about my normal day, though it was a weird thing to happen

Forgooodnesssakenow · 26/01/2023 18:44

2023bebetter · 26/01/2023 17:05

I feel something on my left is blocked but no pain...eg something in digestion?

I also discovered a lump under my skull and pressed it and it made me feel weird. All week I've felt very slightly wobbly.

But fine. I don't want to go to a Ns e but I feel scared

Call 111, they'll arrange an out of hours GP appt so you're seen tonight. That lump is most likely knot on the muscle by your top vertebra pressing on a nerve, I get that and it is so weird.

How you're feeling is exactly how I felt for 48 hours before testing positive for COVID, and back when I had proper flu a decade ago. Get seen but don't go to a and e unless you can't wait for 111 to make an appt. When seen at out of hours they'll check you over and if anythings amiss send you to a and e

2023bebetter · 26/01/2023 18:11

I thought they'd check my stomach and made sure nothing blocked, blood pressure...the lump on head and check bloods inxSe I've suddenly become diabetes etc ..or a hundred other things I don't know!

I felt then like it was going to happen again and a and e would be best place to pass out for any number of issue's.

The absolute last place any sane person would want to choose to be is a stuffy germ ridden a and e ward.

A GP can run all these tests and decide if it needs referring onto the hospital.

Why would a panic attack happen when I'm in. Pet shop perusing cat toys waiting for my cat to be given back though?

Hi OP - I'm a mental health professional. The nature of panic attacks is that they can happen randomly. They don't need a trigger or something that is evidently panic-worthy or panic inducing. A lot of people can experience random dizziness or feeling weird, hyperventilating, chest pain etc, and think its something really dangerous when its actually a panic attack. Also, I've felt the way you described a lot. I am prone to low blood sugar (e.g. an hour after a salad lunch and turkish delight I would definitely feel ill and like passing out) and dehydration.

In reading your replies I see a lot of things you describe that might be health anxiety (like worrying something is brewing inside you, getting worse, or that you've suddenly got diabetes). The reality is that bodies are weird things, sometimes little things happen. All you can do is try your best to arrange an appointment with your GP or e-consult and describe what happens. Yes GPs are hard to get hold of, it sucks. But in all seriousness, the more you worry about what might be, the bigger it often seems and the more you feel like something is making you ill. It may all just be down to a bit of a bug, there's lots going round right now. You can also talk to your GP about your worries about your health. They don't always brush you off as a hypochondriac. Some GPs will help you get general tests or offer you support to manage anxiety around your health.

Get some rest, eat your fruits and veg, have some water, and try to get the appointment. Make sure you don't get too hot also - I often feel like fainting if I'm suddenly too hot. Hope you're alright

Blowyourowntrumpet · 26/01/2023 18:46

This is not for A and E. Call the GP if you most

U1sce · 26/01/2023 18:47

There are glands at the back of the neck, base of the skull area that can get swollen when ill, like the ones at the front/sides of the neck. They tend to get forgotten about but in my family a few people tend to get sore around there when ill and it is their glands being raised as theyre fighting some sort of bug.

Id keep well hydrated

OldFan · 26/01/2023 18:50

I would just rest up for the evening and take it fairly easy tomorrow OP. Something like that can be just one of those things.

But go to your GP if it keeps happening/you're concerned.

The lump on your neck woudl be related to diabetes how?

If you'd suddenly become diabetic you could have very high blood sugars, if you did though it'd have gone on more than a week before you'd be passing out

You need checked but logically think through your potential diagnoses...

Lump= tumour is a common worry, if it is you're not getting rushed to neurosurgery unless you live on Grey's anatomy set, they'd take bloods, discharge you to GP withongoing tests booked.

Diabetes, unless you were having seizures or similar you'd be given meds and referred to diabetic nursing team etc

Blood clot, you'd be inserious trouble by now

Stroke? Dead or paralysed.

If pulse, temp and oxygen are ok you need further investigation but not a ande who are more of a patch you up so you don't die and send you home service

As a health anxiety sufferer I agree

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 26/01/2023 18:52

Possible physical causes of what is happening this week

Lump on neck at base of skull - possible enlarged lymph node; a sign that you’re fighting some sort of infection.

Feeling ‘odd’ for few days - could be sign of viral infection such as flu or, as a lot of people are experiencing this winter, the bug doing the rounds that is making people feel so rotten.

Feeling weak in the knee area, coming over very hot and feeling like you’re going to faint - could all be due to blood pressure dropping (again could well be due to a viral infection); or, could be due to drop in blood sugar - not a lot for lunch, followed by a chunk of Turkish delight giving a sugar rush. The pet shop may have had their heating on, if you also had outdoor clothes on you may have started overheating which can cause a fainting episode.

The feeling of some sort of blockage in you abdomen could be something as simple as constipation; you could have enlarged lymph nodes in the lining of the gut (a harmless condition called mesenteric adonitis) which are caused by fighting and infection - often viral.

Despite your concerns regarding diabetes or something blocking your abdomen, your symptoms aren’t indicative of either condition but far more likely that you’re suffering from a viral infection that’s caught you on a bad day; you probably need to increase the protein and carbs in your meals for a few days to stabilise your blood sugars or eat small amounts more frequently but, more importantly, make sure you’re drinking plenty of fluids as that will help increase blood volume and reduce the risk of blood pressure dropping and therefore reduce the risk of a near fainting episode again.

Bananagirl23 · 26/01/2023 18:52

Agree sounds like anxiety mixed with a bug OP - it’s amazing how strong the mind can be! I’m prone to fainting (and anxiety!) and I read orange juice is good for a quick pick me up if you feel dizzy.

@LovedFedAndNoonesDead .. thank you. The lady at the vet said the lump could be a lymph node showing infection.

Just to be clear, inspite of all the "niggles" I've felt moslty fine all week... working and doing extra cleaning and washing etc at home.

Ive not been in pain or unwell.

Just niggles untill this afternoon.
I was / am worried that something is trapped somewhere, perhaps pressing on something...

I've got wind but not smelly wind and burps... sorry tmi

I do have liquid frequently and today had a good half or litre of water this afternoon.

I've been an hour on the floor of a pet shop.

so you nearly fainted in the pet shop and the vet came and spoke to you?

what has 111 advised?

Which part of that do you think means you are in mortal immediate danger?
