To expect MIL to put some pyjama bottoms on on?

I genuinely don't know. I had a thread about her staying with us the other day...she's 75 and has sold her house and is meant to be looking for another. She goes to bed but then gets up a few times...normal things...back and to the kitchen for a drink or to the bathroom whatever. Bur she's always wearing a t shirt and knickers...and it's not a long nightie type t shirt but one that just sits above her knickers.

I find this so...invasive or something. I just dont want to see MIL in her knickers. However...I am admittedly a bit of a prude sometimes.

Should I say something or not? Jokingly maybe?

I 100% do not want to see MIL, FIL, DM, DF in their underwear

But that makes zero sense. They are family, particularly your Mum and Dad. Have you never seen them naked?? What on earth do you do on holiday? Make them cover up in a towel??

I would obviously be all of your nightmares when I get to MIL state. I only wear pants in bed. I do not own a nightdress or pyjamas. My concession to you would be to put on a t-shirt. If you are lucky I might put on a floaty dressing gown, but not done up.

BadNomad · 25/01/2023 15:31

Stop looking at her bum.

Good god I'm shocked at the number of people on here who are terrified or revolted at the idea of seeing legs and/or pants 😂
I really can't see the issue tbh but then I regularly wander round the house in pants and a tshirt

Perhaps OP can buy her MIL one of these and hand it over - eyes averted, of course, so she doesn't see older woman flesh

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

Gross to me means disgusting, but I don't measure disgusting based on shit stains - I think something being totally unacceptable is gross - it doesn't just mean dirty.

Something not being gross in other situations doesn't mean it's acceptable everywhere - it's not like a blanket rule because you can do something in one place it works in every place 🤷🏻‍♀️

KnittedCardi · 25/01/2023 15:33

Neither dd nor I go round in knickers and a t-shirt

In the summer do you walk around your house in a bikini? Does she? What's the difference?

Again... Disgusting. Such a strong word for someone in pants.

Not this weather, obvs. Fleecy dressing gown and socks. The height of glamour 😄

Even in this weather in a morning! I normally clean the bathroom in my pants before having a shower! Good job my family is ok with nakedness 😂

I'mGuessing you don't have DCs . Nice that you re letting her stay.

But really it's ok to say something ..

Of course it only works if you and DP don't walk around in your knickers with your buts on show

"Mum you've a fab figure but can you please put some pj bottoms on - shorts or trews-as it's weird for me seeing your butt when you walk around in knickers and a short T-shirt . Much as I love you - that's tmi!"

And reply "but we're not a swimming pool/ beach" if she replies with you'd see more there...

Why are you guessing we don't have dc? We do. We have two teens

Bpdqueen · 25/01/2023 15:42

I'd personally leave it I don't think its a big deal you see more at a beach

Catspyjamas17 · 25/01/2023 15:44

YANBU. My DM lives with us. She doesn't walk around in a t-shirt and knickers. None of us do!

Is this a real answer???

You have the start of dementia if you were your knickers to go to the toilet???

No dementia is when your mother in law opens her front door to you with a blouse and nothing on the bottom and then you have to get her upstairs by walking behind her up very steep terraced house stairs!

Mirabai · 25/01/2023 15:45

I mean it’s a bit odd but not actually damaging.

Lol no! A summer dress or t shirt and shorts.

Lol that's a bit much

My mil once came down to brekkie without a bra

Now I know she's French and all that but blardy Nora

How weird and repressed of you.

No because shell see me and stop to talk about some old shite and I have to stand there. Or she'll come to the doorway of rhe living room like it and tell me her plans tomorrow.

So this is where you make the comment… “Jeez Susan… will you put on a dressing gown or some PJs, I can’t talk to anyone while they’re standing there in their undies”.

This may be a stupid question, but does she know where her Jammie’s and dressing gown are? She just moved so it’s not out of the question that she can’t locate or access some of her things.

I’m with you though, I’m the type that puts on a bra (even while wearing a sweatshirt) to answer the door for food delivery guy. And wandering around the house in undies was just not a thing for me past 7 yo.

maddy68 · 25/01/2023 15:49

She's not exactly waving her fanny around. She has knickers on. Would you be be bothered if she was on a beach in a swim suit? You are being a bit silly. If it really bothers you ask her to put on a dressing gown

Catspyjamas17 · 25/01/2023 15:49

Imagine trying to do a Teams call with a grown ass adult wandering about in their undies in the background.

Sorry, I must have missed the part where the OP said she lived on a beach in a warm climate.

Handbagsandgladrags81 · 25/01/2023 15:52

Swimwear is a bit thicker than underwear isn't it? Reinforced gusset??

Id say something like
'Hey, obviously please be comfortable but are you ok to whack on some joggers or a dressing gown to come down in?' There's not much she can take offence in there and if she does, well maybe that's a point for discussion.....

Catspyjamas17 · 25/01/2023 15:55

Good job my family is ok with nakedness

Ways of saying you don't have teenagers without saying you don't have teenagers.

Zanatdy · 25/01/2023 15:55

Wouldn’t bother me but does it bother your DH? Probably would most men

I was a teenager as was my brother and we grew up in a very open house.

DS1 is going on 12 and still wanders round after a shower starkers. In fact he gets undressed downstairs if he is having a shower! For some it really isn't a big deal.
