How can she be left like this? Take her back to A&E?

Posting for traffic has honestly I'm terrified something is seriously wrong with my Mum and don't know what to do so please be nice.

Last week she started with some pain that she says feels like it's right at the very bottom of her ribs and radiating round the sides. She was in agony, basically screaming with pain so I took her to A&E on the advice of 111. All obs and ECG were normal but the blood tests were abnormal. They were going to do a CT scan but then decided as her obs were ok and they didn't think there was a bleed as no fall/injury, they were not going to do a CT scan there but would refer it to the GP to arrange BUT because of the blood test results and recent weightloss, they wanted it done urgently under the "2 week rule" and from his grave tone, I highly suspect he thinks it's cancer and serious. They couldn't/wouldn't give her anymore painkillers because of the painkillers she's on for severe arthritis but these are not touching the pain.

Fast forward to today, she has been in absolute agony since Thursday and seems worse today and can barely move. She's exhausted and crying/screaming in pain. My sister called 999 today but they said as not life threatening they won't send an ambulance but had to speak to GP within an hour. GP receptionist tried to say no appointments so we couldn't speak to GP but after I explained the issue (and she could hear my Mum crying out in pain) she finally agreed to pass a message to the GP so currently waiting to see if GP will call back today or not. Mum says if I take her back to A&E we'll be sat for hours again and nothing will be done but I can't just sit here and watch her in so much pain and do nothing.

What do I do?! Do I make her let me take her to A&E? Do we wait to see if the GP will call? Just feel so helpless

Oh and gallbladder attacks - feel like the worst pain ever!!! Really awful - can make you vomit and the pain is absolutely awful…..generally under your right breast and middle to right ribs and through to back. Can also feel like excruciating wind.

JenniferBooth · 23/01/2023 23:20

@Verbena17 When i had gallstones i couldnt eat SOLID food. I was dieting so couldnt eat stuff like that.

I had a handful of attacks before reading not to eat saturated fats and so after that, before I had my gallbladder removed a few months later, i managed to control it quite easily.
So you mean you weren’t eating saturated fats anyway? And still had the
pain! That must have been awful!!

ButterBastardBeans · 23/01/2023 23:26

The NHS is fucked. I've spent five years in bed trying to find a surgeon to put right an NHS botch job. My DH has nearly dies twice due to NHS cock ups. Seriously we are all being let down and it is a myth in the most part now.

JenniferBooth · 23/01/2023 23:26

Yes ive posted my experience upthread. I got gallstones while losing weight with Slimming World.
Someone who attends the same hairdressers as me had a gastric sleeve operation in Turkey. As she was leaving she was given two large boxes...........anti gallstone meds.

ScandiNoirNuit · 23/01/2023 23:28

Offering a hand hold OP, hope you get seen soon. X

Good luck, OP. I hope your mum gets seen quickly. No one should have to go through this.

Glad you're in A&E. Have they at least given her a chest x-ray even if no CT? I had pain at the bottom of my ribcage when I had pleurisy. One of the worst pains I've ever had tbh! Genuinely considered just stopping breathing at one point just so it would go away.
Hope your mum gets some relief soon Flowers

Gosh, yes. I developed pleurisy symptoms suddenly when out on a job with a group of people I didn't know. I assumed it was a heart attack: I know women don't always get the classic symptoms men do and it was the only thing I could think of that might explain such pain. It was excruciating. I managed to get through our sire meeting and went back to the car thinking I was about to die. Then realised it was associated with breathing and googled and realised what was going on. But eeeeek, it hurt. Good luck OP and OP's mum.

Your poor DM uncontrollably acute pain is an emergency so you've done the right thing
I hope her investigations find the source of her problem asap

StarlitTrees · 24/01/2023 00:04

How is your Mum OP?

This makes me so angry . How have we ever come to a situation where a lady in chronic pain cannot be seen by anyone . It's a complete dereliction of care from the authorities.
I wish your poor mum a speedy recovery and some pain relief .
Something needs to be done . This situation is just not acceptable

Me too. I’m sick of people making excuses for it and making out like anyone expecting basic health care is entitled.

We are at A&E - oramorph didn't touch it. The nurse who triaged asked what the Dr did last week and seemed pretty horrified that she was sent home like this. She's told me this time to be firm and told me not to take her home until further tests done.

A PP said about the Dr probably saw cancer markers in her bloods - can they see that? What are the markers?

It was me . Have enclosed a link but be aware that they do not always indicate cancer eg I had them but it turned out to be a massive fibroid but are helpful all the same. Sorry and I didn't mean to panic you and so glad that she is in good hands now.

A delightful Dr has just been - very, very unhappy with the decisions made on Friday to not scan and send her home to wait for a scan! He is arranging a CT tonight and said he won't be happy to send her home, so possibly staying the night

Glad they're taking you seriously.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 24/01/2023 00:48

glad you are there and finally getting the attention of everyone. We're here to keep you company, it can be a long night.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/01/2023 00:54

Glad she will be getting a CT scan tonight and I do hope she is a bit more comfortable now

Rookie93 · 24/01/2023 01:05

Good luck with the scan and well done for being persistent. Hope the meds are giving your DM some relief from the pain tonight.

CharlotteRose90 · 24/01/2023 01:07

so glad they are taking you both seriously. She will stay the night as it takes ages to arrange CT scans. But hopefully they get the results quick and it’s something like gallstones and nothing sinister. My gallstones felt like the pain your mum had but everyone is different. I’d fight tooth and nail if it was my mum , leaving someone in any sort of horrific pain is disgusting.

Very glad the Dr is taking it more seriously than last time and she’s going to get the care she deserves!
Take care of mum and yourself first, but please keep us updated whenever you can!
keeping you both in my prayers

DividedHouses · 24/01/2023 01:19

Just here to handhold, and say sorry about your mum and thank goodness she has you and your sister close.

The awful, awful, awful state of the NHS is why I don't have my mum anymore. She should have been scanned. She wasn't. She stopped eating and couldn't get out of bed, still no scan.

I hope the CT shows what's causing the pain, and that it's curable, or if RA, manageable.

Please look after yourself and your own health, mental and physical. Not nice seeing your mum in that much pain and hope someone is looking out for you too. 🌸

thaegumathteth · 24/01/2023 01:30

Well done for being strong. Hoping she's got some relief now.

LifeIsJustOneBigWTAF · 24/01/2023 01:32

So glad you're being heard at last and that your mum is receiving some proper care and medical attention. I hope all goes well. For your mum, your sister and you 💐💐💐
